Note

A flat-out zero. I developed a splitting headache after I got home from work, and crashed before getting around to doing any exercises.

running 6:30 [3]

From the Halibut Point quarry to the car and back to get Nancy's camera, which she had left in the trunk. Plus some general hiking around the park and shoreline rock scrambling with Nancy and the three. Weather turned out much nicer than the forecast.

orienteering race 1:47:47 [3] **** 8.28 km (13:01 / km)
spiked:17/18c shoes: VJ Integrator #3

Mt. Tom Farsta, Long. After decideing to skip the CH sprint, Nancy and I showed up for the noon event. I saw the road route to the first control quickly, and headed off that way at a reasonably relaxed pace, but I was in the lead for a while. I was eventually passed by Eddie and Ali, but kept them in sight, such that I saw them ahead of me leaving the first control. Unfortunately, finding the control proved more difficult. I must have passed within sight of it a couple of times, but I think nearly four minutes got lost before I punched, and numerous people passed through in the meantime. Using a somewhat relaxed definition of "spike", I spiked the rest of them. No real troubles, maybe a couple of suboptimal routes, but not breaking any speed records, either. I ended up in 15th place, which is fine, pretty much behind only people I had no hope of beating. Next in front of me was Alex (who had the same forking), by about four minutes, which I basically lost on that first control.

Note

This. Yes, I am.

orienteering race 34:49 [3] 3.28 km (10:37 / km) +175m 8:23 / km
spiked:10/12c shoes: VJ Integrator #3

Earl's Trails, round 1, M45 Red. Pretty clean, the two misses were on 9 and 10, where I was off to the right each time, not too badly, but enough that Pavlina, who I had caught, got ahead of me again. SA also lists me as losing a minute on 11, which was presumably due to either not picking the best route (I went pretty straight) or just slowing down due to fatigue. Good enough for third best time (behind Carl Underwood and Ian Finlayson). Kseniya was initially listed at the meet site as having the best F21 time, but the splits show her substantially slower.

Earl's Trails, round 2, M45 Red. A big mistake on 4 (I actually found 8 and used that to attack), then I was well off to the left on 5, and a very minor error on 9 (checked the knoll just outside the circle first), and on 11 I got to the final trail a little right of the control, and initially turned the wrong way for a few steps before realizing where I was. So overall sloppier, and there were seven people ahead of me (two of them M21s who were slumming on MRed), but I was still well ahead on M45. Strange thing about M45 -- there were hardly any M45s on it, almost all of us were over 50.

orienteering race 22:00 [3] ** 3.6 km (6:07 / km) +70m 5:34 / km
spiked:16/18c shoes: Nike Initiator

UMass campus sprint. The only big errors were figuring out the stairs on 3 and 4 (even those were not that big), and maybe on another leg or two I didn't make the best right/left choice around a building. Tired after the other two races and the hot, humid weather. 21st place on the Long course.

running (woods) 47:13 [3] 7.0 km (6:45 / km)
shoes: Inov-8 Oroc 350

Mystery Blazes LSwamp. Tired enough when I got home from work that I dozed off in the garage, but after my little nap there was still enough daylight for a little traipse through the town forest. I made a concerted effort to not push the effort level at all, to just keep this laid back. A little wet and slippery, and I think some new trees have mushed over on the north side of Mulpus Brook, making it a little tricky to find the trail there.

25 pushups, 50 situps, 15 tableups, 25 squats.

Monday May 21, 2012 #

Note

Not enough motivation or energy to do anything, after wrestling with the FedEx Office website (which used to be considerably nicer) getting the Earl's Trails map order sent in. So my first zero of the year. Although Nancy pointed out that my mowing her lawn with a weed whacker did make my arms tired, so I guess I could have logged that if I wanted.

25 pushups, 50 situps, 25 squats. All I had the energy and motivation for after two hours in the air (working hard) at Greylock.

running (woods) 42:53 [3] 7.0 km (6:08 / km)

exercises 1:55 [5]

25 pushups, 50 situps, 15 tableups, 25 squats. After 13 hours working, I thought I'd probably end up with my first zero of the year, but I managed to do a token amount before bedtime.

pedaling (unicycle) 12:07 [3] 1.23 mi (9:51 / mi)

To the ConComm meeting. I was a little late, so I was riding about as fast as I can go, this was jogging pace.

pedaling (unicycle) 14:34 [2] 1.17 mi (12:27 / mi)

And back home. Carrying a big heavy notebook, so I had to hold onto a car to get started, and I had two dismounts where I used mailboxes to get going again.

running (trails) 23:59 [3] 3.7 km (6:29 / km)

Across Holman, In The Dim. Pretty moist air out there after the recent rains. Started at 8:15 PM, and I brought a flashlight but didn't really have to use it, just turned it on once on teh way back to look for a puddle I had noticed on the way out.

orienteering race 1:55:01 [3] *** 7.7 km (14:56 / km)
spiked:16/20c shoes: VJ Integrator #3

Rocky Woods, Blue. Ugh. The four controls that I didn't spike were real stinkers, although one of those really wasn't my fault (map really flaky). One was a claerical error: the control codes were 101, 102, 103, etc., which was fine until they skipped one. So I punched control 109, and naturally headed for control 10, and got most of the way there before realizing that I had left #8, and still needed to get #9. The other horror was when I popped out on a large trail, just to the right of a junction, and knew exactly where I was and headed into the woods, but then everything looked wrong. Turned out I hadn't noticed the other trail on the map, which ws the junction I was really at. Mapped as a small footpath, but I could have easily driven my car on it. The bigger problem, though, was the conditions. A little thick, footing rocky in spots, but mostly it was 88 F (according to the thermometer on my dashboard when I got back to the car), so the best I could manage for a lot of the time was a walk.

Probably would have been another decent flying day, though it didn't look good in the morning.

Not feeling very spunky, and this was at a leisurely pace. Very nice day, probably easy to get a sunburn (I think I escaped), but it was definitely breezy and gusty, so I don't regret my decision to not try and fly. This should finish up my need to run on Mass Ave east of Arbor Street. Got the Village at Flat Hill, including the access road for the pipeline leading to to shared septic system, which doesn't really count as a road, but I did it anyway, as far as the gate at the end of the pavement. Watt Street is in appalingly bad shape.

GPS track is pretty flaky today, so I'm using the distance as measured by gmap-pedometer.

Note

Well, it sounds like not only was the day flyable, it was basically epic (though a bit of a drive may have been required). So it goes. There's always next time.

running 23:52 [3] 2.3 mi (10:23 / mi) +60m 9:36 / mi
shoes: Wal*Mart Carson

Across Holman, just to the dam and back. I got home from work when there was still some daylight, and the rain had stopped, so I decided to do something more interesting than the indoor exercises, and I decided to GPS it this time, too. My intent was to be very casual about this, but I wound up going at about my usual level of effort. I suppose it wouldn't be unreasonable for me to list myself as injured this week; although the bruising doesn't really hurt when I'm sitting around, and it didn't really hamper my running, it is affecting my sleep -- rolling over onto my left side (which I periodically do) is very painful, and I can't lie that way at all.

exercises 1:55 [5]

25 pushups, 50 situps, 15 tableups, 25 squats. Getting up to speed on this job is occupying a lot of time, and it looks like a lot of time will be involved once I'm rolling along as well, as it's pretty busy times over there (which is why they needed to add a guy like me).

Monday May 7, 2012 #

Note

So, I went to work. And I have a 90-degree cubicle with a nameplate, and a badge that lets me in through the front door, and a computer on my desk, and a phone that actually works (at least I assume it does, but nobody has called me yet). And by the end of the day, I was a little less bewildered and was starting to get an idea of what it is that they want me to do (and it sounds like something I know how to do).

One way in which this place will likely be good for me is that my vegetable consumption is apt to increase, because there's a cafeteria in the building with a good salad bar. I rarely buy vegetables for home because I don't eat them soon enough before they expire (my pantry tends to contain food with long shelf life), but now I can have salad every day.

orienteering race 1:47:01 [3] *** 8.96 km (11:57 / km) +305m 10:12 / km
spiked:13/15c shoes: VJ Integrator #3

Turkey Mountain, Red long course, M45. Not too bad, kept moving pretty well, injuries didn't slow me down. No instances of getting lost, one case of sloppy execution that might have gone better if I had taken a more careful route, and a couple of cases of getting to the circle but not seeing the flag right away. Only one of those resulted in much time loss, maybe a couple of minutes on a complex slope when I wasn't sure which lump was which and hesitated, figuring it out instead of heading off in some dumb direction. Also a questionable route to the last control, I went straight and pushed pretty hard, but in retrospect I think the route I never saw, taking the road on the left, was probably better. I was with Mika more or less from #9 to the end, trading off the lead at times, although I was about 35 minutes ahead of him. I didn't stick around for final results, but things were looking pretty good when I left, maybe ahead of all of the women (Ali ran Blue). ... Results came out, looks like I was 4th, behind Gnatiouk, Balter, and Carl Underwood, not too shabby (though they were all well ahead).

So, last weekend at the Billygoat I screaped up my left forearm and got a bruise on my left thigh. Yesterday I smashed myself below the left knee and on the left hip, plus I put a ding in my left palm. It seems that today I whacked my left ankle a bit when I stepped in a rocky hole. I kind of feel like I need to clobber my right side a bit to reestablish some symmetry.

orienteering race 44:16 [3] *** 3.7 km (11:59 / km) +165m 9:47 / km
spiked:11/15c shoes: VJ Integrator #3

Bull Pond, Red middle distance event, M45. Saying that I spiked 11 controls is being generous. Really flopped around on the first one (all inside of the circle), and on a few others I lost small amounts of time. Unfortunately, on leg #7 (I think), a steep downhill diagonal, I hit a slippery spot and my feet went flying, and I came down hard on my left side on granite. The worst spots are just below the knee and the lower part of my hip (right where the joint is). Serious abrasion and heavy bruising, one of my worst orienteering injuries ever. I was limping slowly for the next leg or two, but then the pain subsided enough and I loosened up. Not a very impressive showing, but good enough for first place in M45, behind about 7 or 8 M20s and F21s. (Looks like the good M45s mostly moved up to Blue.) Time to take some excedrin and hope this doesn't hurt enough to keep me from sleeping.

Another wet day (though I didn't actually get rained on), so I put on the crappy sneakers again and added a couple of roads. The easy stuff is mostly gone, and now I have to travel a fair distance before I start adding new streets. A little bit of GPS screwiness just after mile 2. I also had to wait a while for the traffic light in both directions.
