pedaling (unicycle) 42:25 [2] 3.78 mi (11:13 / mi)

Reverse trip from yesterday, so I could drop off Rachel's car at Raddin and pick up mine. It's clear that unicycling is a bit faster than walking, though I was walking pretty briskly yesterday. A bicycle would have been much faster, and it occurred to me later that there was one in the garage that I could have borrowed. Another beautiful day to spend some time outside.

hiking (pavement) 55:37 [1] 3.78 mi (14:43 / mi)
shoes: Rugged Outback

From Ernie's to Radding to pick up Rachel's car while mine is being serviced. I guess if yard work is a George workout, and intervals cut short is a Phil workout, this is a Clint workout. Just walking, I have trouble getting motivated for a run like this on pavement, but a nice day to be out. I don't normally log this kind of walking, but this was long enough that it seemed worthwhile.

orienteering race 4:43:05 [3] *** 26.2 km (10:48 / km)
spiked:25/26c shoes: GoLite SunDragon

Hudson Highlander XIV. This went much better than I was expecting. Some wheezing during the first three legs or so, but that passed and didn't come back until after I finished. My aerobic and energy limitations were not nearly as much of a problem as recent outings would have indicated. There was really nobody ahead of me who I was disappointed to be behind, and there were a few behind me who I was happy to be ahead of. Kept moving at a decent clip for the entire race, and finished less then two hours behind the winner (barely). Cramping wasn't a significant problem, and my footwear choice seems to have been excellent. For the first time in about 25 years, I wore ordinary socks in a woods orienteering race, and the GoLite shoes caused no blisters, no hot spots, and no toenail damage. They even held together, which is something I was wary about when the president of the company saw them at the Boulder Dash and expressed some surprise that I hadn't shredded them yet (they're an outdated model that I got very for very cheap from an online surplus liquidator). I've also been feeling lately like my navigation skills have gotten very rusty, and in particular that I have become lazy in terms of how much I actually concentrate on the map, but the navigation went very well, though being a mass-start race, there were some times when the proximity of others helped.

orienteering 26:05 [3] *** 2.65 km (9:51 / km)
spiked:2/2c shoes: Wal*Mart Carson

Picking up the two controls at Fox Forest that were overlooked on Saturday afternoon. Just before dusk, brought a flashlight just in case but didn't need it.

I think the Highlander is going to be very slow, difficult, and painful in my current condition.
