First loop went ok. Ran with Bryan in sight early on, but we split at the gaffling and I made some small mistakes. Nearly missed the direct foot-path line on the return leg, and had a little wobble to recorrect. Was caught by Lachy who pulled me along through the last ones into the map change.

Picked up the second map and was thrown a little bit by the distance - I thought I had picked up the long one by accident. But unfortunately I was wrong.. Lachy headed off onto a different gaffle and I was by myself. This is how I expected the race to go - in the game for the first loop or two but then out the back in the struggle town.
Ran by myself for the whole loop and didnt see many others. May have seen some Lachy-hair disappearing over a bare rock on the butterfly. Was struggling quite a bit with some sore calves/feet, and thought I had done my shoes up too tightly. Have had this problem before and it is hard to find the aggression/race motivation, especially when I was running by myself.
Luckily I joined Bryan again heading out onto the last loop.

We picked up the first two controls fairly cleanly and I was happy to sit in behind Bryan who charged down taking the direct route down to 103 for the last time, with Shep appeared over a bare rock and join the train. After passing Lachy I assumed that we were the front three and my expectations for the race quickly changed!
Took a quick drink at #35 but in my rush, nearly drowned. Had to keel over for ~15sec feeling like I was about to vomit a lung before I could run. Bryan and Shep had already dissappeared around the corner and set a cracking pace down the back side of the hill. I only just managed to keep them in sight as they weaved around the bushes 40m in front of me and I nearly killed myself in a panic to get back on the pack.
I made it to the last butterfly still with the others but was pretty disappointed to discover I drew the short straw - I ran in one direction and could only listen to their footsteps fade in the other direction. At this stage I was pretty pumped up and was really excited to get around this gaffle cleanly. Made one loop ok, but there was no sign of the others. I made a little mistake on the second part and was a bit confused coming into the final control of the butterfly so was super nervous thinking I had some solo work to do to get back in contact. Punching the control, I was very relieved to look up and see the other two just coming in, it was still on!
I knew it was time to turn up the heat, but still important to be precise. Was really hard to keep calm running down to #46 aiming for the bare rocks and not hearing anyone behind me. Punched the control with a lot of adrenaline pumping. Was frantically looking behind me and back up the hill to see if I had given away the control site, but there was no sign of the others.
Ran through a big pack of cockatoos screeching which gave me a bit of a kick. Managed the last loop quite clean, but not without a looking over my shoulder, expecting a big finish in the others. Was really happy to take out 1st place. Definitely did not think I had an ultra long win in me. Awesome race though! Really pumped up doing a cool pack race style race in aus.
