orienteering 1:27:31 [3] 7.8 km (11:13 / km)
shoes: inov8-12

Scottish 6 Day, day 5. Glen Affric South. Rough terrain, slow going. Made good use of the elephant trails early on. Solid navigation except for #11, tough control in rough open, lost contact and searched for about 5 min. Quite an adventure. 11th place, surprisingly best result of the week.

Scottish 6 Day, day 4. Darnaway West. Nice running in the WOC relay terrain. Felt really tired, running out of gas after 5 days of racing. Technically not bad, just slow rumning. 14th place.

orienteering 40:14 [3] 5.0 km (8:03 / km)
shoes: inov8-12

Scottish 6 Day, day 3. Darnaway East. 12th place. Solid run, only a couple of bobbles. Really nice terrain, nicer than the terrain used for WOC. Still running slow, figure 1 min/km off what I would otherwise be running. Foot was a bit stiff in the morning, wasn't sure if I would run. But, it loosened up and doesn't really hurt, so I figure I'm not doing it much harm. Will run again at Darnaway and probably 1 day at Glen Affric, depending on the runnability there.

orienteering 56:57 [3] 6.2 km (9:11 / km)
shoes: inov8-12

WOC Middle at Darnaway East.
Solid, if not stellar race. Ran the first 15 controls pretty well, few bobbles here and there, but no major problems. Major mistake (3 min) at #16, in the cut-over crap. Struggled in the green to 17-18, then walked in the cut-over to 19-20 to avoid blowing it again. Last few controls were fine, but I'd lost some of the fight by then.
Foot was pretty good for the first half, felt like I could push pretty hard and run fairly naturally. Weak in the rough and very slow in the cut-over. Started to feel a bit gimped at the end as I got more tired.

More thoughts on WOC ...
1) I had no illusions of being a contender, but had hoped for more. 65th out of 79, 22 min back = not great. Taking away a 3 min mistake and giving myself 5 min for the foot injury would have moved me up to 61st, still way back in the pack.
2) 9 min/km is slow. The terrain was tough, vegetation was thick, and it shows. WOC is designed to test the best and it can be pretty tough on injured old men. Even with the 8 min "credit", 8 min/km is about as fast as I could have run out there. The guys that can run 5.5 min/km are amazing.
3) The early start was a disadvantage, but not huge. There was limited bracken that would track up significantly and large sections whete I doubt tracking was significant.
4) Injuries suck. Hurting my foot just 11 days before WOC was a big downer and made focusing on the technical aspects of the race pretty tough. I feel like I focused pretty well on the day, but in the lead-up to the race, injury management took way more of my energy/attention than I would have liked.

orienteering 1:10:00 [3] 5.0 km (14:00 / km)
shoes: inov8-12

Scottish 6 Day, day 2. Strathfarrar. Headed out planning to do part of the course, cut the middle part of the course out and skiped a couple controls at the end. Rough terrain, lots of bracken, and big side slopes. Not what I needed today. Foot felt a little less solid than yesterday, hopefully just a sign of the terrain. Tweaked it on a rock (running a trail) and it really hurt briefly, but it seems to be Ok now.

orienteering 1:09:59 [3] 8.2 km (8:32 / km)
shoes: inov8-12

Scottish 6 Day, day 1. Achagour. Decent run, 20th in M40. Foot was Ok (little pain) but didn't run too agressively. Frustrating to be going so slowly at times.

orienteering 55:00 [3] 4.0 km (13:45 / km)
shoes: inov8-12

WOC Middle distance model. Terrain is Ok, nice contours, kind of "junky" forest. Lots of deadfall and branches on the ground. Foot was much better than yesterday. Bought an ankle support that seems to work really well. Not fast, but one step forward as I can now actually run in the terrain.
