Orienteering 10:15 [4] 1.0 mi (10:15 / mi) +10m 9:57 / mi
shoes: Salomon Wings

A short run on the model map. It was good enough to really run on and the controls were all on the right spot. I went slowly as my head was full of gunk and hurting and I really wanted to look at the map. I feel I could have done it in about 7min. My right calf got tight and if there was another km in it I would have started losing some serious time, so I must do a 2km warm up tomorrow. My strategy "balls-to-the-wall" and screw the consequences. I'll make sure of the first 3 controls though and then really bomb just grabbing at the controls and taking big risks on route choice. Worst that can happen is a dsq, but then in my mind its better to go for it and get a dsq than to pussyfoot around a come second last...

Captain Masochist took us on a long run through the forest, or is it simply that I'm tired and a little sick. I just couldn't get into the O zone. I still did quite well, but my concetration lapsed on a couple of key occassions and I was really feeling every little ow. I just feel like a little girl today. I got through the session alright, but I need some sleep and a good laugh to build up my spirits. Missing my wife!

I felt terriible last night until I was rehydrated. I still have an annoying little cold and my right foot is quite badly inflamed, although i don't know why. I guess it has something to do with some bruising tree kicks, but it feels worse than it ought to. Maybe its a hangover form the dehydration. I decided to rest it today as we had a serious session yesterday. It turned out to be a good idea as the fellas were in the forest for 3 hours instead of 90min and had no benefit since the map was so badly out of date. I enjoyed my time relaxing and recovering and will do some serious sessions again tomorrow. My focuse for the enxt 3 days will be sprinting techniques and speed work. I COULD qualify for a final in my heat if I manage to run 5:30/km which is what I did in the training session with the Chinese the other day. If I can get it down closer to 5min I stand a real chance. Anyway, no expectations so I am relaxed and ready to enjoy my run.

Good afternoon training session. Lunch did not sit well (fried ham and cheese and a 500ml beer) and I was feeling ratehr crap towards the end. I was still running smoothly and hitting my attackpoints with boring regularity. I'm very encourage and hope that I can keep this form going into the Champs. At least I won't embarras myself then. I did get quite sick later on and realised that I had dehydrated and that the beer was a very bad idea.

Orienteering 2:12:59 [4] *** 8.0 km (16:37 / km) +532m 12:28 / km

Awesome session - I was on top of my game and was running confidently into controls and exciting at teh right angle. I lost very little time getting into the control and more often than not i found the feature before I found the flag (yellow bog roll) Lots of climb and I felt good climbing strongly and maintaining good contact with the map.

Long distance training in a Classic distance type area. The forest was thick and visibility was poor in most places. It was difficult to stick to a bearing or to identify features so the running was really slow. I made minimal mistakes but I was slow on putting out my controls (did not want ot put it in the wrong place) and covering ground in light green areas was challenging. Good tatse of technical O in the thick stuff. I'm sure NIc would love it if the whoel course was like this because it would slow down the runners and give him a great chance. NZ runners joined us and they enjoyed it. Good training. Feeling sharper and still running strongly.

Orienteering 19:58 [5] *** 3.5 km (5:42 / km) +20m 5:33 / km

Great Sprint training with the Chinese team. They've been here for two months an are using their own version of SI and Emit. its really good and apparently very cheap. I'll chat to their reps when they get here. I made zero errors on the run and although the time does not show it, i beat Nicholas by about 20seconds. I ran straight to where 10 was but could not see the flag or the brick and ran around for another minute and a half before I saw it atatched to the pole. The others had a problem with 13 which was hanging on a soccer goal post. I had great run and feel good about the sprint. Need to work on a few more sprint sessions, but I think we'llonly have one more since the rest of the team is focused on the longer stuff.

Orienteering 1:16:21 [3] *** 6.4 km (11:56 / km) +175m 10:30 / km
ahr:153 max:183 spiked:15/21c rhr:52 slept:8.0 weight:172lbs shoes: Salomon XA Pro 3D ultra

This was my first run after my little cold and it felt pretty good. I started really slowly and made sure of the first thre controls. Then I thought "This is quite easy" and then made a 13:31 mistake. This screwed up my head and spent the next hour messing around, just running easily and occasionally picking up the pace between specific controls just to be able to compare some of the controls times to the leader. Most of those I did fairly well, but I'll need to focus my orienteering and put in a bit of pace if I don't want to totally embarass RSA on the medium course. I was happy though, because besides control 4, I saw the features and could control my direction quite easily. I'm sure we'll improve over the next days of training and its a pity we couldn't have had this event next weekend, just to guage where we're at before the games start. I'm happy.
