Pleasant walk in the snow through the woods and on the beaver pond, which seems plenty thick enough these days. The heron rookery's days are numbered though. Only ten nests, and the remaining snags are fewer and shorter every year.

Training course at 5 Ponds. I think this was past the window, but I was confident the flags hadn't been picked up. Snow and ice, but very fine conditions with my optimal footwear choice - microspikes. Never a slip! I seem to do better when I am just off doing a training course, not the usual anxiety of a real race. Still a few bobbles. Got off line on the way to #4 and had to make a 90 degree turn once I looked at my compass, then the boulder showed up sooner than expected, so I went by it a little and had to come back. Then off line a bit on the way to 9, but corrected when I saw a trail too close on my right. Otherwise pretty efficient navigation, and a nice day in the woods.

Map with route.

At Butternut with Zack. Just recorded one run, just for the fun of it, and only did about 7 runs total. It was pretty cold, but excellent conditions and very few people there. Just ski on the lift and go. I need to plan my gear a little better the next time. Fingers and toes too cold, so we only stayed a couple of hours.

With Rhonda. She enforced some sections of jogging on the way back. My jogging is not much more than my walking these days.

At PV with Rhonda, and not feeling so clever about it. It was killer windy - what I imagine a mild winter day in the Medicine Bow Wilderness might be like. Plenty of sticks of various size in the street and more to come down. Heard a big one land in the woods off to the side.

Other (Ice skating) 15:00 [3]

I wasn’t expecting to be doing this, but Charles Jr has been talking it up and he talked me into it, so I met him at the skating center in West Hartford. I haven’t done a lot of skating, and none lately. Last time was probably in 2002 at the outdoor rink in Providence. Anyway, I don’t think I will be going again. Just didn’t feel at all secure. It all came to an abrupt end when Charles took a tumble and apparently broke his wrist. So now I am at UConn Health Center waiting for him to get checked out and x-rayed, wondering how I will get him home.
