Rhonda's morning class, special edition, with Jackie and Karen.
10 AM

Rowing Machine 8:57 [3] 2.0 km (4:29 / km)

Just trying it out after another long break. Mostly OK, although out of breath by the end, and a few twinges, one along the inside of the R thigh that I strained at the Corn Maze and again and worse at the North Americans sprint. Not sure how to get that any better. I've been doing a lot to roll, stretch and strengthen it, but apparently to no avail. Also the R lower back complaining a bit. But gratifying just to be able to do it at all.

Hike 1:24:32 [3] 5.19 mi (16:17 / mi) +348m 13:28 / mi
shoes: 2012 gel kayanos

Around the neighborhood with Rhonda, including 3 laps of the Foxcroft-Robin-Ann neighborhood. jogging lightly down several of the hills, and then at the end taking Sassy out and around the hospital loop, very icy.

in the gym with Rhonda. Some warm up activity, including another set of the ones with the band around the ankle from yesterday, then a circuit workout 5 exercises, 4 rounds, 45 seconds on, 15 off: pulldowns, GH raises, squats, pushups and wall sits. Went by fast.

In the gym with Eric, stretching, core and bands. I did one set of band work (which I have done before, but not much) where there are 8 exercises of about 15 reps each. I get a band around one ankle, stand on the other leg and then the banded leg goes forward and then back to center, then I am sideways and it goes away and I pull back to center, etc. Eric said that this is often an ankle or knee exercise, but it is trivial for those for me. Instead the hip stabilizers on the bracing leg get a really hard workout, and we knew that those are an area of considerable weakness for me. So I guess as unpleasant as it is, this is a good one for me.

A varied but busy day. Got up at 2:30 and took the 500 train from Bridgeport to Grand Central for young Cooper's bris. An event I greeted with no more enthusiasm than he, but it seemed to be quite a big deal for the family. Got home at about 1:30 to a call from PG, followed by a delightful visit. Then he went on home and I headed off to class at Central, where we are reading Machiavelli. Excellent.

Stretching, core, bands, in the gym with Eric. Mostly recovered from the episode of a week or so ago, but still feeling sore and vulnerable.

Plowed the driveway first, pretty sloppy, about 2" of wet icy stuff.

Still a little sore after all the mushroom work. After some negotiations with the likely participants, R & Z, R & I walked around an abbreviated section of the neighborhood and Z stayed home. Not as brisk as when I go alone.

We put up 36 shiitake mushroom logs today, Zack's project. A lot nicer doing it in the heated barn than it was doing it outside 20 years ago. We had Rhoda, Mike and Cindy helping for about 2/3 of it. Pretty fine that the mushroom spawn ran out at the same time the logs did.
