6 AM

Gym 1:00:00 [3]
slept:5.5 weight:164.4lbs

Back in the gym with Eric. Had some sore spots, low back and L hamstring, so cut back on the weight, and just DLs and squats today, plus one set of 3 ring dips before he showed up.
3 PM

cycling (light blue bike) 1:00:38 intensity: (2:25 @0) + (22:13 @1) + (24:30 @2) + (8:36 @3) + (2:54 @4) 12.28 mi (4:56 / mi) +67m 4:51 / mi

With Rhonda while she was trying out her new bike. First time on a bike in a few weeks for her, so she was not pushing it.

Hogback loop. I got back from Lake George just before 4, so not a lot of time. This was just right. I had much better legs for cycling than I did for riding in the car, and felt loosened up after this, pretty strong all the way around.

Sunday Jul 29, 2018 #

Gym 20:00 [3]

Fast round, a few sets each of DLs, back squats, bench press, pull downs and one set of 2 ring dips. Sore. Maybe not the best idea to go 3x a week.
8 AM

Hike 1:01:58 intensity: (8:29 @0) + (41:48 @1) + (8:12 @2) + (3:29 @3) 3.19 mi (19:25 / mi) +42m 18:40 / mi
ahr:97 max:130 slept:6.5 weight:162.2lbs

With R&S at the lake, including throwing a few sticks for the dog. Saw a nice-looking forwarder perched by the side of the trail, so apparently some logging is going to happen.

Nice, hilly ride with Peter, exploring on my new light blue bike, which is more or less the equivalent of the famous dark blue bike. A very fine machine.
3 PM

Note

Pretty beat after the ride. Didn’t actually sleep, but I was pretty immobile for a few hours. Then I pulled myself together and did some overdue brush mowing for a couple of hours, finishing up with some weeding in the scanty bit of vegetable garden we have going this year.

Gym 30:00 [3]
slept:6.75 weight:164lbs

Quick trip out to the gym for deadlifts (3X8 - 135), squats (sets of 8 - 75, 2X85), bench presses (75, 2X85), pulldowns, 3X10 at 8, ring dips (2x1). Hadn't done these in quite a while, probably well before I cracked my wrist in January. They'll build up.

Note
slept:6.5 weight:162.2lbs (rest day)

Another rainy day, and some calls and other obligations made it hard to get out anyway.

Turns out that when I was otherwise distracted, Rhonda bought us gravel bikes. I just found out about it today when I got a call from the bike shop, so apparently I will be similarly kitted out to my esteemed colleagues PG and PBricker. So no shopping involved on my part. Maybe have them in a day or two.

7 AM

Gym 1:00:00 [3]
slept:5.5 weight:163.6lbs

With Eric, mostly DLs and back squats. DLs at 135, last set of back squats at 90. Very satisfactory.

On the other hand, a lot of knots in my legs right now. Too much sitting.
3 PM

cycling 1:39:46 intensity: (1:10 @0) + (4:25 @1) + (50:45 @2) + (35:28 @3) + (7:25 @4) + (33 @5) 22.42 mi (4:27 / mi) +248m 4:18 / mi
ahr:127 max:166

Up Sandy Brook Rd. Nice ride, made it all the way up seated, even the sharp little bump at the end, so very satisfactory. Felt good most of the way, the last 2 miles being a bit more of a struggle. A long way to go.

10 AM

Gym 30:00 [3]
slept:7.0 weight:163.4lbs

Hanging out with Matthew. Did some DLs, squats, benchpresses, pull downs and GH raises. Good enough. Pretty tired after all the walking around with Rhonda the last few days.

Overnight guests last night: Matthew and Jake, Annie, Michelle and her boyfriend Matt. Matt did a little in the gym last night, lifted some weights that haven't been used in a long time and are not likely to be used much by me ever again.

HR bogus on the new 235. Not sure what’s up with that.

From PV, doing the little lollipop heading south on arte 8 and up the hill to Robertsville Road and down to the bridge and Riverton rd. Hadn’t been on Robertsville in at least a few years because the pavement had been so bumpy. Looks like they repaired it but now it is starting to get some holes in it again. So maybe I missed the best time for it.

Looking over the estimable accomplishments of Phil and Ken got me to thinking about my various rogaine activities, all well in the past. Maybe an incomplete list, and certainly the time frames are elusive.

First one, probably around 1989 or '90. Someplace in the Adirondacks. Maybe 4 hours, maybe 6, with Rhonda. Two memories in particular. One is that she drank all her water and all mine. The other is going to a control at the top of a large hill, when she asked how we would find it. She was particularly pleased at my response: "Just put your head down and climb."

Probably 1992. Fred and I traveled way up in Quebec for a 36 hour team event. Not precisely a rogaine, but teams of 3, 36 hour time limit, maybe 6 controls well spaced out. Our 3rd teammate had travel problems and we showed up without him. We inherited a young fellow who was surplus on a Canadian military team. He was toast within a few hours. We found the first control, then decided to head back since he was pretty helpless. So maybe 8 hours out, 8 hours back, arriving just before torrential rains.

Mid-1990s, 24 hour with Stan at Drummond Island. My bag didn't make it and all I had was sandals. Borrowed some really old spiked shoes from Al Newman, and my feet were pretty miserable, particularly because the course involved large expanses of bare rock. We went back to the hotel in the evening so I could change into my sandals, but then I couldn't get Stan back out of bed!

Mid-1990s, 12 hour with John Maier near the Mexican border in AZ. Started in the pre-dawn with javelinas scurrying around in the brush. John was a much stronger runner. He had the punchcard, and didn't bring his hearing aid. There were a few times he ran by a control and I had to grit my teeth and run him down to get him back to it, because he couldn't hear me yelling at him. However, we cleaned the course in 10 hours and won! At one point near the end we got passed by Ron Hudson and his partner. I was physically pretty spent, and it was killing John who could easily have kept up or beaten them, but then they made a serious navigational error and we cruised in, 5 or 10 minutes ahead of them.

Mid-90s or a bit later, 24 hour with John Potter in AZ. John thrashed me royally for about 10 hours, then bonked. We went back to the hash house for a one hour nap, but I couldn't get John out of the tent for about six hours. Last two hours were excellent, though, and we picked off a lot of nearby points. Noteworthy because we had borrowed John's father's car instead of renting one, and it got seriously muddy. Ran it through the carwash three time, but pretty embarrassing returning it in that condition. Rhonda was also along on this trip, partnering with Gail, but Rhonda turned an ankle in the first hour and had to retire from the fray.

A bit later, probably early 2000s, 24 hour w Bob Lux, somewhere in AZ. I wore o-shoes. Serious mistake and I got some serious blisters. Bob thrashed me for about 12 hours, then bonked and I had to encourage him around the second part of the course. Pretty successful outing as I recall, although the DOMS was excruciating afterwards.

6 hour at Great Mt Forest with Bob Lux, maybe 2005 or so? Opted for the 6 hour instead of something longer because I was flying out to the US champs in Oregon the next day. Once again, could barely keep Bob in sight for the first half, had to offer him a lot of encouragement on the second half.

24 hour with J-J in NW Pennsylvania. Not sure when, but his brother Alan was still living in or near Buffalo because we stopped there after. J-J and I were pretty compatible at the time in terms of approach to the race and general physical condition. Our biggest problem was that none of the stuff we brought to munch on tasted any good to us after a while. Around daybreak J-J suggested we head in, which I hadn't even considered. It sounded good to me at the time though. Only problem was that we were about as far away from the finish as you could get, so it took a really long time to get there.

8 hours at the Big Muddy in Oregon with Rhonda and John Potter. Generally successful, although John needed a lot of encouragement over the last few hours. Maybe around 2008 or so. Hard to remember.
1 PM

Hike 1:44:31 intensity: (13:46 @0) + (1:15:17 @1) + (9:27 @2) + (6:01 @3) 5.19 mi (20:08 / mi) +95m 19:04 / mi

No time for driving someplace, and I've been thinking about this loop for a while. First time this year up the devil's elbow. Way too hot for this, and the route is deficient in shade as compared to the leafy environs of the Farmington River where we usually go. Thought I could make it up the elbow in my 3rd smallest gear, but I was defeated about 80% of the way up, and had to drop down all the way gasping.

So a fine workout. I learned a bit more about my 235. I was wondering how to do splits, and I found out by accident when the workout screen disappeared and I pushed the wrong button several time, apparently getting a bunch of closely spaced split time.

I've been feeling off for a few days, pretty clear now that it was some sort of cold building up. Sore throat, fatigue, lots of nose blowing. general malaise. Off to the walk-in clinic later to get checked out, see if there is anything to do about it.

The other symptom is that I was continually feeling hungry between meals, finally gave into it yesterday afternoon and felt a bit better after.

Taking a break from rate filings, and nursing my back, which doesn't much like sitting through rate filings, I spent a pleasant 20 minutes or so in the hot tub. Cool, lovely morning and perfect for the birds, who were flitting about in the trees nearby. A pair of binoculars would have been really useful, but even with the naked eye, which seems to have hit another point of inflection in its path to decreasing acuity, I spotted several nice ones, and glimpses of others that looked most promising.

Most prominent was a handsome male american redstart, but also the more usual bluebirds, chickadees, titmice, nuthatches, phoebes, what looked like a black and white warbler, certainly others.

Also a gray squirrel, practicing the division of labor in these parts. Gray squirrels have the run of the middle field and the area around the house. Black squirrels carry out their activities by the barn, side field, down into the woods that side of the driveway. It's been like that for the last 10 years or so. Don't usually see them together.

No bears seen this morning, but the day is still young. They are really out and about these days. I saw two young ones with ear tags crossing the road just down the street when I was coming home on Thursday, and several of the neighbors' trash cans had been violated Thursday morning - presumably belonging to the kinds of folks who put their trash out the night before. Not something I am inclined to try.

Started this full of enthusiasm, perfect weather, good legs, but around 9 miles in my back started to act up, and so I turned back, struggled to get back with the whole left side in discomfort. I've been having various kinds of left side problems since the flight to Milan and the drive from there to MdC. It was better for a while, but I seem to have set it off again yesterday lifting weights.

Gym 20:00 [3]

It was our intention to do a weight workout without Eric, who is busy entertaining his fiancee. Some stretching and warmups, several set of deadlifts at 135#, then I was doing some dumbbell bench presses (themselves fine) but strained my back sitting up with the weights on my legs, so that was the end of the session. Not terrible, but will probably take a day or so to calm down.
12 PM

Note

I was contemplating the deliciousness of sandwiches today as I was having one, and I am recording some of the most delicious

1. The most delicious was one I had today, and it will only be getting better over the next month or so. Tomato and cucumber with a little mayonnaise and salt. Good bread is essential. I am partial to that of Alavarado St. Bakery, somewhat hard to come by in these parts, toasted. This, in my opinion, is the most delicious sandwich of all, but it would not be worth the trouble to eat one once the good tomatoes are gone.

2. Grilled cheese. Different kinds of cheese are good. We had some particularly nice ones with Brie the other day. Even better is to have some thinly sliced red onion in it, or some sliced kalamata olives. Again, excellent bread is required, and the Alvarado St Bakery bread is perfect. We have them here cooked in a pan with olive oil on the bread.

3. This was close, and might edge out #2. Pane Cunzatu. You could look it up. We first had these in Sicily. A tasty chewy bread, sort of a flattish ciabatta, sliced the long way, toasted and rubbed liberally with garlic cloves. A good drizzle of olive oil. Rucola, mozzarella, roasted peppers, a bit of tomato, olives and/or capers, and anchovies. Good Sicilian ones. You need a lot of paper towels to deal with the dripping olive oil.

4. Tuna salad. Got to be the good imported stuff, packed in oil. No bumble bee or star-kist. A little mayonnaise, capers, good toasted bread.

Of course there are other delicious sandwiches, but these are the ones I seem to like the best.
3 PM

Hike 1:20:00 [3] 5.0 mi (16:00 / mi)

With R&S at Lake McDonough. I was wearing a pair of water shoes because I thought we were going for a short walk and a swim, but I was mistaken. Anyway, they ended up blistering the top of a few toes on my left foot, so the left shoe came off for the last 3/4 of a mile or so.

Pretty nice out. Rhonda was going to Stanclift to swim, so we negotiated a pickup there. I overestimated the time and arrived early which was good, since Rhonda decided there were too many people in the water for swimming to be interesting and one quick look confirmed it. A hot day, but pleasant enough riding on shady country roads. Only hot spot was coming across the dam.

Long travel day yesterday, thought I would sleep this morning, but up at 3:30. Will probably crash later.

Stopped by Francesca's for a short visit with Tullio and Giulia, who are headed home today.

A little gentle swim at Stanclift with Rhonda, who moves a fair amount faster these days.
