Gym 1:00:00 [1]
slept:6.5 weight:165.6lbs

Rhonda's morning class. Just me, Rhonda and Jackie. Maybe too humid for some folks.
5 PM

Kayak 40:00 [1]

With Rhonda at Stanclift Cove. Hot in the sun, very pleasant in the shade nearer the shore. This is hard on my chronically weak and sore L forearm. Frustrating. Also hard to get the kayak on and off the roof. If I'm going to do this, I probably need to get a lighter weight one. Rhonda's is much lighter than mine.

cycling 1:06:00 [3] 14.5 mi (4:33 / mi)
slept:7.75 weight:165.8lbs

A hard time getting a ride in this morning. We left from Pleasant Valley, thinking we were going about 30 miles up toward Sandisfield, but hadn't gotten all that far when we encountered a woman calling from a bit off the road, asking if we had a cell phone. With my questionable hearing, I found myself wondering why this lady was asking about a snowcone. Fortunately Rhonda understood and we stopped. The lady was with a rather boisterous pitbull type dog, young and active, and off leash, now running out into the street. Still didn't quite get the problem, but I secured the dog and then she explained. She had been walking the dog on the trail, off leash, and he jumped up on her and knocked her off balance. She fell and broke her wrist, was in a lot of pain. She wanted us to call her husband, which we did rather promptly, he was on his way. She only lives about a mile away. So some time goes by, we assure her we will stay with her. After a bit I ask why it is taking so long and she says that he is working in Sandisfield, he is on his motorcycle, and will have to pick up the car at their house. So now I realize we are in for a bit of a wait, think about going back to get our car and either take her home or to the hospital, but that will take 20 minutes or so, and by then maybe he will have come. Some more time goes by and she remembers that she thinks she has the keys in her waistpack. So I dig them out, and now it seems like the right thing to ride to her house and either present the keys to her husband Dan, or if he hasn't shown up yet get her car and drive back for her. I head to the house and call out for Dan. Not only does he not have the key to the car, but he had left his key to the house home, and had just taken off a screen and climbed through a window. At last he was off to get the dog and secure it at home, then back to pick up the nice lady (Andrea) and whisk her off to Charlotte Hungerford ER for some needed attention. At last on our way, but having blown off about an hour on this exercise, we cut our ride short.

elliptical 15:00 [1]

warming up before working out with my friend Tom's personal trainer Eric at Healthtrax
8 AM

PT exercises 1:00:00 [1]

working out with Eric, stretching and strengthening - nothing I don't know how to do, but he is a good trainer and finding things that may work for me for my incredibly sore back, weak glutes and hams, etc.
2 PM

cycling 42:00 [3] 8.75 mi (4:48 / mi)

First part of bike ride with Zack. I had pressed the start button on the Garmin, but it didn't start, and I didn't notice until we had been going a while. Same ride I did a few days ago, from the house, ending up in West Simsbury. Zack was not as impressed with Lost Acres Rd as I was. It is a long downhill, but not steep enough for his tastes.
3 PM

cycling 1:07:01 intensity: (14:51 @1) + (34:34 @2) + (17:03 @3) + (33 @4) 16.25 mi (4:07 / mi) +203m 3:58 / mi
ahr:119 max:146

The rest of the ride. Pretty fine, although my back was tender.

ahr:96 max:124 slept:7.5 weight:165.4lbs

With Rhonda, around the neighborhood, but a shorter loop. Back and hip quite sore this afternoon. They felt pretty good this morning, but deteriorated over the day, and I was not up for the longer loop. This included a visit with our young friend Belle, our favorite local teenager. She was doing some gardening for a neighbor and hailed us for a brief chat.

With Rhonda, Cindy and Mike, from PV. Includes some wait time for a couple of stops, including one because Cindy couldn't get out of her pedals, so some time helping her out, and then adjusting the pedals, etc. Comparing to the bike computer, seems like 21 minutes off the bike.

Wild kingdom here today. Handsome pileated woodpecker sampling the trees outside my office window, bear waltzing across the yard headed for the apple trees.

From the house, up Case Street and around, up Devil's elbow. Amazingly difficult to get up Devil's elbow these days.
8 PM

Note

Bears are getting out of hand this year. We had a couple of babies climbing in the plum tree a few days ago with their mom watching them. When Rhonda and Zack approached, mom reached up and grabbed them and moved on. Today we had a larger bear eating apples, climbed the apple tree and pretty much ripped the top off the tree. He moved on toward the plum tree and was not at all intimidated by me and Zack yelling at him. Gave us a baleful look and got back to what he was doing.

With Rhonda from W Simsbury, our longest outing so far. A lovely day to be out, and riding some of the roads I cycled when I lived in Bloomfield in the 80s. Coming through Granby thinking of people I used to know when I lived there in the early 70s. Quite a pleasant ride.

Pretty concerned about my ability to do this day after day in Sicily. My lower back is extremely sore, and was pretty much from the start of this ride today.

There had been some negotiating with Zack during the afternoon about a possible bike ride - he was thinking about something longer and more difficult than I would have picked, but then we got into some yard work, and by the time we got in he was thinking about golf. So off we went to Simsbury Farms at about 6:30, got 9 holes in. First time I have played twice in the same year in quite some time - maybe 5 or 6 years, anyway. He was hitting some more powerful shots than I have seen him hit before, and somehow I played all 9 with the same ball, not even having to look very hard for it. A nice time, but the scores were pretty pedestrian. Sort of a PR, I suppose, in that I haven't played the back 9 in several years, and I have to reset PRs pretty often now.

All 3 of us were a bit out of sorts today. Rhonda had set up a party yesterday with some of her friends and their families. The women were supposed to show up at 2 for cooking lessons and gardening, the men at 4. Women actually arrived around 3-3:30 and the men at 6. And then stayed way too long.

ahr:128 max:159 slept:5.5 weight:165.6lbs

Shortish ride up to East Hartland and back. My back was really sore this morning, and I would have taken it off, but such a nice day and I doubt I will ride the next two days. Just by myself, as Zack declared it too hot and Rhonda had company.

Up Sandy Brook from PV with Rhonda. This was hard, and pretty discouraging. My back was pretty much on fire on any uphill, and my L triceps pretty sore by the end. Not sure how I am going to get myself ready for the trip to Sicily.

5 AM

Gym 55:00 [1]
slept:7.0 weight:165.4lbs

Rhonda's morning class. A bit sticky, and I was more than usually stiff, I guess after the bike path ride. Bike path is generally harder for me than the up and down I get closer to home. Perhaps the unvarying position and tempo is more stressful.
10 AM

cycling 1:27:00 [3] 20.0 mi (4:21 / mi)

With Rhonda from PV. Rode part of the way with Cindy, who was on a much longer excursion.

Hike 25:00 [1] 2.3 km (10:52 / km)
slept:6.0 weight:165.8lbs shoes: 2011 NB MT840

Dog loop more or less, with R&S. FDFs out in force. 3/4 of the way around I am jogging a bit with Sassy and see a handsome-looking bear up ahead, then another partially hidden in the leaves of a tree maybe 10-15 feet up. Sassy goes off in sharp pursuit, but puts the brakes on when the bear doesn't run away. So we decide on another route, and I start running that way, which gives Sassy a way to withdraw without losing her dignity.
4 PM

cycling 1:51:13 intensity: (36:00 @1) + (59:19 @2) + (10:25 @3) + (4:35 @4) + (54 @5) 24.54 mi (4:32 / mi) +266m 4:23 / mi

Bike path ride with Zack. He got a pretty spectacular blowout flat about midway. We put a new tube in, but the tire is toast. Lucky to make it back. I was surprised and impressed with how nice the bike path is from Collinsville to Unionville and Farmington. All repaved, nice grassy borders.

Round two with the arborist. Today they cut some dying maples and hemlocks near the deck, cleaned the deadwood and cabled the big red oak on the S side of the house, helped me clean up the mess from the pine from last week, chipping a giant bunch of limbs and saplings and stuff in what seemed like minutes, and took down a dead sugar maple and a dying tulip poplar near the driveway. Fine entertainment.

Lovely hike at Cedar Tree Neck with Rhonda and Isabel. We hadn't been here in over 20 years, since we lived here. White trail down to the beach, where we saw deer tracks and piping plovers. Had to backtrack to avoid beach area that was roped off for the plovers, and then came around through the woods to the other side. Saw a bunch of tiny piping plover chicks with the parents. Don't think I have ever seen the chicks before when they were so small. Many birds are full size by the time they leave the nest, but these guys are tiny. We also saw a group of 4 goats that have been rented to clear underbrush. Alas, not an option for Ratlum because mountain laurel would be toxic for them.

From Peter and Isabel's on trails with Rhonda, finding the old sand pit, Old Holmes Hole Road (not a road, but a bit wider path) past where Whippoorwill Farm has expanded and put in a giant solar array, and down to the West Tisbury School, now bigger than the high school was when we lived here. And then back again. A fine route.
