At McLean. Did this instead of crossfit. Nice day, haven't been running much. Still kind of logy when I run. I have noticed a fuzzy headed feeling pretty much every time I run since the accident. Don't know what to make of it. Legs maybe a little tired after two hard crossfit days. Otherwise ok. A fine day, not much evidence of the hurricane on the trails, except some real scouring near the bridges where the stream jumped the banks.

Gym 45:00 [3]

the so-called filthy 50. 50 reps each of 10 exercises, for time. Very hard. My time for the whole thing was 18:48. slower than many of the others, but they were only doing 30 reps, I think. Seems like the big guns were coming later.

The exercises:

KB swings (1 arm, 12kg)
ring rows (1 arm)
lunges
box jumps (24", I was doing step-ups in case I stumbled)
squats
pushups (I subbed 1 arm dumbbell bench presses, 25#, dropping to 20# after 30)
situps
supermans (lying on stomach, lifting hands and legs - I'm not very good at this)
mt climbers (an all 4s activity - I subbed another mystery exercise)
long jumps

7 AM

Hike 25:00 [3] 1.3 mi (19:14 / mi)
slept:7.5 weight:160.5lbs

dog walk with R&S, surveying the aftermath. Not much down that will require a chainsaw. Trails still pretty damp but drying out. Of course, no personal chainsaw work for me for a while yet.
9 AM

Hike 45:00 [1] 1.5 mi (30:00 / mi)

Another excursion, this time at a leisurely pace with Tullio and Giulia, visiting the Big and Little Down marshes, seeing the sights. When we got back Francesca was there to spirit them off, all of them flying out later today.
2 PM

Note

pin out. Not much to it. One good pull with a pair of pliers. The doc seems satisfied with the progress so far.
4 PM

Gym 45:00 [3]
shoes: 2011 NB MT101 green

workout today was pullups and thrusters. I did one arm dumbbell thrusters with 25 # and one arm ring rows. Pretty darn hard. The squat part of the thruster is trivial, as is getting the dumbbell to the top. Then at the top my arm just can't hold it and it comes down more or less out of control. Interesting. Room for improvement. Some warm ups and ran 400 M first, 800 M after. Pretty tired when it was all done.

8 AM

Hike 40:00 [3] 1.75 mi (22:52 / mi)
slept:8.0 weight:158.5lbs

Dog walk with Rhonda and Sassy, with a side trip to view the Big and Little Down Marshes. Lots of rain, high water. The beavers have generally recovered from Zack's depredations on their dam last week. Water on the trails up to about 10" deep in places, and running pretty fast on the hills. There had been a report on tv this morning that Canton had already had 7" of rain, and it certainly was coming down vigorously. We returned from the walk to find the power out and water in the basement, so I got the generator going. For some inscrutable reason, it is not operating everything. Among the things not working: upstairs refrigerator, well pump, microwave, scattered outlets. Pretty mysterious.
6 PM

Note

Very nice dinner party for 9, all on generator, and luckily everything working. Attendees: Francesca and Jeff, parents of bride, mother and sister of groom, and our friend Isabel. Some fine Italian dishes and Rhonda's usual nice spread. Low key hum of generator in the background. Power returned at 1130 pm

Saturday Aug 27, 2011 #

Note
slept:4.75

Rhonda was champing at the bit, so I got up and we got out of our hotel at 4am and hit the road home. A few spells of rain, but good driving conditions and home by 1pm.

We were greeted by the parents of our old exchange student Francesca. Francesca lived with us in 2001-2. She came to Canton this week with her new husband, a young man she first met at Canton High. She and husband Jeff, and parents Tullio and Giulia, were here to visit Jeff's parents. T and G ended up staying at our house while we were in NC. They were supposed to leave, but Irene cancelled their flight, so we had the happy circumstance of them still being here for a few days.

So a very nice Italian dinner, a group effort, and some nice visiting until I could get upstairs to bed and crash.

Running 37:30 [3] 3.5 mi (10:43 / mi)
slept:8.0 shoes: 2011 NB MT101 green

Out and back along the Blue Ridge Parkway trail with Rhonda. Plenty of folks out on the trail while it is still cool.
1 PM

Note

We seem to have done most of what we intended to do - signed the papers, cleaned out my mom's remaining old tax returns and financial statements and got them shredded, donated a bunch of stuff to the hospice shop, and loaded the car with things to bring back. Getting a little anxious about the hurricane, so we headed back a day earlier than we thought, leaving around 1:45. Stopped for dinner in Christianburg, VA, and then pressed on until about 10, stopping for the night in Strasburg.

Thursday Aug 25, 2011 #

Note

Spent the night in Hazleton PA, got up early and drove the rest of the way to Asheville. Or at least I rode the rest of the way, as Rhonda did all the driving. Got to my mother's place at 5.

3 PM

Note

Dropped Zack off at college, which didn't really take long. Rhonda and I headed south from there to Asheville to go through more of my mother's things, sign papers to put the condo on the market, etc. Rhonda doing the driving, we got past Wilkes-Barre and stopped for the night.

workout today was supposed to be two rounds of run 400 M, 50 medicine ball squat cleans and 10' throws up against the wall ("wall ball"). I got a pass on the cleans and throws, so just did front squats, did 3 rounds to make up for it.

with Rhonda, Linda and Sassy down to Cherry Brook Farm. I wore the gps because I was wondering how far it was. Muddy in spots. Linda is a trouper, but not as fast, so this was a pretty slow pace.
11 AM

Gym 8:25 [5]

On my own out at our gym, since we missed the class this morning. Made my own workout. 21-15-9 three exercises. situps on the GHD machine, one armed 25 lb DB thrusters, one arm pull downs on the lat machine. Got my attention.
5 PM

Note

Rhonda and Linda and I went to a party this afternoon, returning a little tired out around 5. Zack was camped out waiting for me. He had been attacking the beaver dam on the Little Down Marsh and wanted to show me. We went down to survey the situation, riding in the Polaris, and then he decided he wanted to bring the tractor down and use the backhoe, so we did that. He was throwing logs and sticks up on the bridge and I was dragging them away left handed and dumping them on the downstream side of the trail. I was getting pretty tired, but can't miss an opportunity to participate in something Zack is that involved in. After a while our neighbor's son Joe showed up, saw what we are doing and hustled back to get his dad, Steve. Steve hunts our property each fall, and is quite a fine guy. Joe is 13 and this will be his first year bowhunting. Anyway, they got quite interested and pretty soon there were three of them down there digging sticks out and throwing them on the bridge and I was falling behind. Steve went home and got a big chain and Zack pulled out a 50 foot long log that was anchoring a big section of the dam. We knew there was a log in there, but had no idea it was that big. The tractor pulled it right out of the middle of the structure lengthwise. Pretty amazing. Eventually it was dark, the water level was down about 2 1/2 feet, and beavers were patrolling from the Big Down side, trying to figure out what to do about all this. Eventually they will win this fight, unless they get trapped out, but there is a pretty good chance they will meet that fate this winter.

2 dog loops. legs tired, and not much energy. Probably tired from crossfit.
7 PM

Note

out for dinner last night at the local Thai restaurant. I tried to use chopsticks with my left hand, but it was about like trying to do it with my foot. I can eat fine with a fork left handed, but chopsticks required too much control. So I took off my splint and tried it right-handed. Pretty successful, and a robust exercise. By the end of dinner, not only were my hand and forearm tired, but my shoulder was tired and a little tender, too. Good to start doing more things like this, see what I can do. Not the chainsaw yet, I fear, although I am troubled by fallen limbs along the trails here.

Note
slept:8.0 weight:155lbs (injured) (sick) (rest day)

Experiencing the end of a period of digestive distress, and pretty tired out from it, and apparently a bit dehydrated as well, as this is a new low in my g.

Went to PT today, where most of the time was spent on fitting me for a splint and getting me out of the partial cast I had been in. I saw the operative notes. Apparently I fractured the ends of both the radius and ulna, and one of the small bones in between. I have a plate screwed into the bones and a pin that is helping to hold things together temporarily. The pin has a little round head on it that will be use to pull it out when the time comes, in about a week or so. Got a couple of exercises to do. Not much forward and back range of motion yet. Fingers otherwise have good mobility, although my thump is restricted by the splint.

Mostly laying around and napping today, but I expect to be more lively tomorrow.

Yay for Sam, Ali and Louise!

Gym 45:00 [3]

Miscellaneous warmups, including some snatch practice with the pvc pipe. Then the workout was supposed to be alternating sets of pushups and ring rows, neither of which was going to work for a 1 handed guy, so I got one arm push presses and lunges, alternating sets of 10 reps. Made 23 sets in 15 minutes. Pretty sweaty.

A mini session from Rhonda as warm-up for the crossfit workout at our place today. Jen brought the gang up here for a special workout and 22 people showed up for it.

Running 20:00 [3] 3.5 km (5:43 / km) +105m 4:58 / km
shoes: 2010 NB MT840

5 or so loops of the upper trail loop at the house. This was one of the activities in the crossfit workout, so periodically I jumped in with some folks even though I wasn't doing the rest of the workout.

Note
(injured)

Very fun crossfit session in the backyard. We had 6 big tractor tires set up in the middle field for flipping. A pullup bar and rings hanging from a tree, and medicine balls behind the barn for squat clean and throw up on the wall. Workout was run a 700m loop, 10 tire flips, ten burpee-long jumps, ten medicine ball clean and throw, then over again, several times. In addition two of the more accomplished participants added in 10 pullups (Jordan) or 10 muscle-ups (Mark) each round. Would have been fun to do, but also pretty good fun to watch and cheer on. 22 participants.

Easy trail run at McLean with Rhonda. Trying to watch my feet but still stumbled twice. A fall would not be good. Also, the Merrells have very little heel elevation or protection, so they will take some getting used to. A nice day to be out. Just a few FDFs and mosquitoes. Not enouhj to worry about a blue hat.

Strange night last night, waking up several times an hour, but then falling asleep again pretty quickly. Taking a lot of meds today, but reasonably alert and able to catch up on a lot of work, although the typing is a chore. So mostly in my office, with Rhonda scheduling meds and applying an ice pack 20 minutes on, 40 minutes off all day.

Took a few short walks with Rhonda and Sassy.

The crossfit gang is supposed to have a workout here on Sunday, and Jen had dropped off some equipment.

Continuing to read The Good Soldier Svejk during my breaks. Pretty hilarious.

A very nice call from PG around 5, right before he took off for France.

slept:4.5 weight:160lbs (injured)

In to Litchfield Hills surgical center to get my wrist fixed by Dr. Wisch, who turns out to be a neighbor. He lives about a mile and a half down Wright Rd. Apparently I've met him before, although I don't remember the occasion. A pretty efficient setup. After a bit of minimalist paperwork, they have me installed in a bed, putting in an IV line to sedate me, and then administering a nerve block. During the operation I'm awake enough to hear them talking, but not alert enough to know what they are saying. According to Rhonda, they put in a plate, some screws and a pin, but I wasn't part of that conversation, or at least I don't remember. They send me on my way by 10, and Rhonda installed me on the couch, with a book on the iPad for between bouts of dozing.

I also have a bunch of Dilaudid for pain, but no need to take it until the nerve block wears off, scheduled for a gradual return beginning in 12 or so hours. The nerve block is a strange experience. Absolutely no control over the arm, and no feeling. Also no sense of where it is, so it would not be a good idea to let it out of my sight, as in near the stove, or where the cat might chew on it. I have it in a sling, but I still have to hang onto it, because it can slip out. Because I am hanging onto it, I have a sense of the forearm being really heavy, but not a sense of it actually being attached to my body.

Around 4:30 or so, the first stirring of movement in my thumb and forefinger and I took the first of the Dilaudid. Too little too late, as the block wore all the way off within a few minutes, and there were a couple of tense hours with the pain until I got enough of the meds in me. But then it was ok. Also taking 600mg of vitamin I starting now and twice day, and stool softeners, as constipation has been a side effect of the pain meds since I started with percocet at the ER last week.

workout today was a bunch of overhead squat practice, then 21-15-9 of overhead squats and burpees, except I got to do a different kind of squat, holding a 30 lb dumbbell endwise just under my chin because I am so bad at OHS - no back flexibility.
3 PM

cycling 20:00 [3] 5.0 mi (4:00 / mi)

Mt bike to Stanclift Cove to meet Rhonda, who was swimming. Almost there when it came to an abrupt end. Preparing for a left turn on the steep downhill, looked back to see a truck coming. Because of very limited neck mobility, I turn my body pretty far to see back. When I straightened out and started to brake the front wheel started to whip back and forth and I couldn't get it under control in the nanosecond or so before plummeting to the pavement.

My wrist was obviously broken, but otherwise very lucky. Very minor raspberries on r shoulder and r ankle, no other discernible damage. Got up with a bit of assistance from the truck guy who had stopped, coasted down the access road to find Rhonda and which a ride to the ER at Charlotte Hungerford in Torrington, where they decided I was a fast track patient. Location, location, location. I would have been a much lower priority at St Francis or Hartford Hospital, where gunshot wounds and stabbings are regular competition for less dramatic injuries like mine.

some warmups and practices, then the workout was as many rounds as possible in 13 minutes of 5 deadlifts and a "sprint" that may have been a run of about 60m out and 60 m back. Plus a little transition jog because I wasn't set up for the deadlifts near the start and finish of the run. DLs with 135. Made 11 sets of DLs and 10 runs in the time limit. Big class today - 15 participants. Most of them were slowing down considerably as the workout went on. So I was about in the middle of the pack early, but running faster than most of them by the end. Made my calves hurt again.

Nice walk around the property with Larry Rousseau, the state forester. He was here as part of a study of property that is managed under the Stewardship Incentive Program. I always like to see Larry, and he seemed pleased with the forestry that has been done here and the general state of the wildlife habitat, especially inside the deer fences, where the regeneration is going very well, lots of good habitat for a variety of species.

miscellaneous warmups, then rounds of 21-15-9 of toes to bar, box pushups (feet on the box, butt in the air), standing long jumps. Except I strained my stomach a bit on the set of 15 and stopped after that.

I ran into our neighbor Candace, who was there for her first time. It's a small world, and I have had several points of connection with Candace, although we have only actually met a few times. Most recently, it turns out, Candace did the inscription on my mother's gravestone, which is one of Candace's many talents. Candace is a freelance engraver for the memorials company down in Norwich, where my mother is buried.

7 or 8 years ago I was listening to car talk as I was driving to NYC, and heard this piece where Click and Clack were giving advice to a woman looking to buy a car that would meet her needs. As her needs got explained, the brothers were having more and more fun. She needed a car that she could put large canvases in, because she is a painter. She also needs to carry gravestones around because she etches. She needs to be able to carry wedding cakes, because she bakes. She needs to be able to carry a deer carcass or two, because she hunts, and she also butchers game for others. As the story progresses, it is all sounding more and more familiar to me. Finally she says, oh, and I have two dogs. I turn to Rhonda and I say, "the Brittany spaniels." And the lady says, "they're Brittany spaniels." Well of course it was Candace. Bob and Ray recommended she get a Honda Element. She got something else. However, when I saw her today and reminded her about car talk, she showed me her Honda Element, which she finally got two years ago.
