Running 50:00 [3] 4.5 mi (11:07 / mi)

recovery jog with John and Rhonda in Forest Park off Leif Erickson Drive in Portland. Then followed up with a trip to Powell's bookstore, where Rhonda in particular was quite engaged.

Orienteering race (rogaine) 7:40:00 [3] *** 30.0 km (15:20 / km) +1000m 13:09 / km
spiked:17/19c

Big Muddy 8-hour rogaine, with Rhonda and our old friend John Potter. John was our good friend when we lived on the Vineyard, and a sometime orienteer with a Billygoat shirt or two and also a Highlander and Traverse or so, all in the 90s. He moved to Portland three years ago to become the operations manager for the Oregon State Parks.

The objective of this all was to have a good time and visit, and as John said, "Let's not win." The trip was almost a success, because somehow we won after all, at least for our division, and I think tied for first among all 8 hour groups. Walked at least 95% of the time, and ended up doing not too much of our original plan, as better ideas cropped up along the way. John and I were a big help to each other with the navigation, and Rhonda was her usual fine company. Saw a number of teams several times, but never saw Peter and Barb after the start. One team in particular passed us several times running, but we were walking some pretty efficient routes and spiking all but one or two of the controls we got.

Orienteering race 2:56:38 [3] 13.79 km (12:49 / km)

Billygoat at Mt Tom. Usual mix of good and bad. With some awfully good runners early as they made errors, but made plenty of my own. Skipped 13, which was a poor choice, and had varying degrees of trouble with several controls, including 2, 5, 7, 8, 14, 15, 18, 19. Sore feet, depletion and cramping took a toll late. Physically most taxing goat for me that I finished in time, although I think I was more beat up by the two I didn't finish in time. With various folks early, then by myself most of the middle, picking up Jim Henderson at 15 and with him most of the rest of the way until my last fall on the trail around the pond at the end. A fine course, but a bit too much heat, climb and rocks for me.

red long course at team trials. Out early, and didn't see too many folks. Wil Smith three times at different places, as he was out on Blue. Got too low on #4 and thrashed around a bit, until Peggy showed up coming down as I was going back up. Then with Peggy pretty much through #10. PG showed up at #5 from the other direction, and ran with him to 6, but he disappeared going down the hill to 7 and that was the last I saw of him.

Things were going pretty well until I missed #16 and had the darnedest time finding it. Probably lost 6 minutes there, and as it turns out about 8 places.

sprint course at team trials. got sucked in by unmapped cliff, where there was a blue course control in a reentrant, so a MP. That set me up to miss the next one left and lose abouit 30 seconds. Otherwise moving along ok.

Note

Hip pretty intolerable, so went off to visit my friend Brian Magna, the physical therapist. He seems to think he can repair it, so I'll try that for a while. He encouraged me not to cycle or run while he is working on it, but I must orienteer, so that will perhaps delay any improvement.

Hike 1:10:00 [3] 3.6 mi (19:27 / mi)

Same hike, to Cherry Brook Farm and back, with Rhonda and the dogs, and Rhonda's friend Julie. Time is an estimate; Julie doesn't go as fast as we do.

I woke up yesterday with a very painful hip, and this was a test. It loosened up after about a mile and then was fine, although it tightened up again once I got home.

Day 2 Green Course at Huntington. Really fine woods and an excellent course. I really felt into it from the start. Got a little tired toward the end, but overall felt like I did well. Looking back, I think I would have been faster if I took more trail options. Particularly going from 6 to 7 I got bogged down with a little glasses fog and trying to read too much along the way, skirting marshes and finding trail segments, not making too much forward progress. Looking at it now, there was a very serviceable trail option to the right, going back through the finish, which would have been kind of fun. A very slight boom at the end, maybe 30 seconds, maybe less. Otherwise finding things well, if not too fast and not always the best route. Excellent course and an excellent meet. We were back so early and it was so cold, that we just went home. Not much energy the rest of the day. Mostly just read a book. Unusual for me, particularly on a sunny day, but too cold to tempt me into some yard work project.

Orienteering race 42:10 [3] *** 3.1 km (13:36 / km)

Green Y middle course at WCOC meet. George thought men were on Y (as they were for Red) and since I was an early starter it hadn't been straightened out yet. Woods very nice and mostly orienteered well, but a couple of bad legs: Parallel error on #1 took me to wrong hilltop. Seemed a bit far, but I was making things line up in my mind until I hit the trail beyond #2. Saw #2 on the way back which made the second leg easy. Then things were going really well until glasses started to fog near #8. Minor boom there as I got sucked off right to another larger apparently unmapped rock, but that was only a few seconds. Fog really set in on #9, where I was on line and almost there and then couldn't see any of the detail along the final hillside, so back and forth hunting for it for 6 minutes! Lost the glasses in a tree on the way to #10. Good that I had a streamer on them or I wouldn't have found them. Nice course. Need to work on vision correction. I ditched the contact last weekend because I wasn't seeing well and my eye was burning. Eye still feels a little sensitive.

ahr:141 max:171 spiked:12/13c shoes: 2009 Yellow NB 840s

Green Y course at West Pt. Had trouble yesterday with the contact, and my eye was sore this morning, so I went with glasses. Much more satisfactory. I can see the map better and they didn't fog or get too streaked.

Generally a pretty good run with a couple of exceptions:

Lost time repairing the punch stand at #1, then more time going down to the road before finding out the gate was locked. Finally, despite being in contact all along the big hillside, I got fooled by a patch of bare rock that I couldn';t see on the map and turned back to look at the knoll before the control again and work my way in.

Got badly hung up in mountain laurel leaving #4.

Otherwise very nice. Particularly liked the second half of #5 through the finish.
3 PM

Note

Pretty tired coming home. Remarked to Rhonda that 10 years ago we would have gone for a 50 mile bike ride on returning from an event that early, and we agreed that we certainly didn't want to do that this time. Unpacked the car and contemplated lots of other things that needed doing, but then I had a call from my neighbor Tom, inviting me to play golf. I have been putting him off for more than a year, so resolved to try.

It didn't turn out well. I hit a half bucket of balls and didn't get one of them more than about 2 feet off the ground, or hit any of them straight. Once we were playing, I actually hit some ok shots, mixed in with some real stinkers, but it didn't feel good on my elbow (braced), lower back or right hip. I hit my best shot on the 7th, a drive of 280, in the fairway, but I could feel it deep in my hip, and I took the next hole off. I did string 6 bogeys together, which was pretty remarkable given that I seemed to have at least one shot each hole that made no appreciable forward progress.

I won't be playing again for a while, but I guess I can count it as rogaine practice.

Middle distance race at West Pt. Pretty good run. Came up short on three of the first four controls, but not a severe loss of time. Probably lost the most on #6, where I went right to it, but ran a longer route to avoid climb and apparently dawdled a fair amount on sidehill. A little anxious at the start because we were delayed by an accident on I-84 and had to hustle on the long route to the start to make our start times. Last I looked, 4th iin M60 behind the usual suspects, PG, coach and bl.

WP sprint course. Apparently didn't get the FR turned off at the end. Moving ok. Ran well enough, but blew by #2 and lost 2 minutes by the time I got back to it. Otherwise perfectly satisfactory.
