Sunday Jan 31, 2010 #

9 AM

cycling (spinning) 45:00
weight:163.5lbs

another class with Rhonda giving direction, me, Chris and Gina struggling to keep up. Pretty tiring, and so I imagine good for me.
10 AM

Note

dog walk out and around on Big Down Marsh. Beautiful sunny day, not as cold as yesterday, but below 10 deg. Looking for Rhonda's glasses that she lost yesterday.
2 PM

Note

a couple of hours of chainsaw work along Derby Rd. Plenty of broken oak limbs to process into firewood. Took the Polaris, which makes it a lot easier than hoofing it with chainsaw, oil and gas.

Saturday Jan 30, 2010 #

8 AM

Note
weight:164.5lbs

Hiking with the dogs. -6 deg F this morning, clear and sunny. The dogs are in their glory. They are energized, built for this weather the way I am for palm trees, 79 deg and a slight breeze. Sassy runs ahead with her nose in the snow, turning back to show her white muzzle.

Had plans to try Forest Park this morning, but with the cold and wind, and the possibility of icy streets, seemed better to let it go.

Cold is mostly at bay, and I declare it over.
9 AM

cycling (spinning) 45:00

With Rhonda and Chris & Gina from next door. Rhonda put on a "class" with changes of speed and intensity, up and down, etc. Chris is not one to back down from a challenge. Pretty hard.

Friday Jan 29, 2010 #

6 AM

cycling (spinning) 30:00 [2]
weight:164.5lbs (sick)

With Rhonda, while Sue and Jan did a circuit workout. Felt ok. Gradually turning the corner on this cold.

weights 15:00 [1]

A few exercises, but not up to the intensity of a crossfit workout
8 AM

Note

Hard fall on ice while walking the dogs. Yaktrax not much good with an inch of snow on top of the ice. Hit mostly on R elbow, which doesn't hurt much, but wrenched the muscles between the scapula and spine and that hurts plenty. Snowshoes next time.

Thursday Jan 28, 2010 #

Note
weight:164.5lbs (sick) (rest day)

I think I'm turning the corner with this. Expect to be back to some degree of action tomorrow. Saw the doc this morning, who said my lungs are clear and declined to give me a scrip. Not as fatigued today.

Wednesday Jan 27, 2010 #

8 AM

Note
weight:164.5lbs (sick) (rest day)

Another brief dog walk, and that will be it for the day. Still achy, tired and coughing. Cold in the chest. Dr tomorrow morning.

Tuesday Jan 26, 2010 #

8 AM

Note
weight:163.5lbs (sick) (rest day)

Seemed a bit better, so took the dogs for the usual morning walk (~2k). This was something of a setback, and I am feeling quite worn out from it.

Monday Jan 25, 2010 #

Note
weight:164lbs (sick) (rest day)

This has been coming on for a while. Coughing, scratchy throat, tired, achy - all that stuff. Generally miserable and not up to much.

Sunday Jan 24, 2010 #

11 AM

Hike 38:26 2.0 km (19:12 / km)
ahr:90 max:122 shoes: NB MT840

pre-hike of Sweetheart Mtn trails with Rhonda and Mary Ellen, who are putting on a hike this afternoon for the Land Trust's youth group. They generally get 100+ turnout for these events. In yaktrax, as the trail is a bit icy. How will the kids do?

Running 2:59 0.23 mi (13:05 / mi)
ahr:116 max:130 shoes: NB MT840

from car on Town Forest Rd jogging into start of 5K course at Stratton Brook.

Running 31:18 3.12 mi (10:02 / mi)
ahr:139 max:152 shoes: NB MT840

Stratton Brook 5K. I gradually convinced myself I had a wrong turn in here, because my times were just too good. I haven't measured the course I had been running, but I'm pretty sure this one is right, as it hit 5K almost right on. I estimate the other version was about 400M short. Icy in most spots, although a bit clearer than when I ran this with Rhonda and Chris last week. Wore the yaktrax.

Running 2:45 [3] 0.28 mi (9:49 / mi)
ahr:140 max:143 shoes: NB MT840

and back to the car again

Saturday Jan 23, 2010 #

7 AM

Note

morning walk with the dogs. AOWN observation of a flock of 50 or so cedar waxwings bopping around in the trees.
10 AM

Running race 51:16 6.19 mi (8:17 / mi) vdot: 38.7
ahr:160 max:176 shoes: NB MT840

Snowstorm 10K at Forest Park. Took my neighbor Chris along, but Rhonda is still nursing her injuries from her fall last weekend. Definitely a PR for the year, as it has been a while since I have run a 10k. Predicted time was 52:30, and it was looking pretty close until I picked up the pace on the downhill at the end.
2 PM

Note

Helped my neighbor Chris split and stack firewood for a couple of hours, and I'm really tired now - back is tender.

Friday Jan 22, 2010 #

6 AM

cycling (spinning) 25:00 [2]

with Rhonda and the girls. Not pushing it.

Thursday Jan 21, 2010 #

2 PM

Running (woods run) 38:17 2.87 mi (13:20 / mi)
ahr:138 max:153 shoes: NB MT840

Art Sweeton loop, with Sassy. Back feels ok. Wanted to keep it light, though, particularly after seeing how high my HR was last time, so kept an eye on the HR and tried to keep it generally below 140 or thereabouts.

Snow was a little crusty and both Sassy and I were breaking through. That seemed to take some of the steam out of her, and she hung with me the whole way, instead of going off on excursions like she has other times. I wore the yaktrax, and there were places it would have been dicey without them.

Also includes 1:42 wandering around in the house after I pushed the lap button instead of the stop button at the end. Eventually I noticed the watch was still running. These danged buttons are opposite from the Casio lap watch, and it will take me a while to figure them out. I think I can most likely look forward to pushing the wrong button whichever one I am using, now that I am thoroughly confused.

Slept on the floor last night, which agreed pretty well with my back, although I ended up getting up even earlier than usual.

Wednesday Jan 20, 2010 #

cycling (spinning) 30:00 [1]
(injured)

gingerly session with Rhonda. Didn't seem to bother either of our backs.

Tuesday Jan 19, 2010 #

Note
(injured) (rest day)

Didn't even leave the house today. Several naps on the floor, which is more comfortable than a bed or the couch.

Monday Jan 18, 2010 #

6 AM

cycling (spinning) 40:00 [1]
weight:164.5lbs

Plowed the driveway of 2" of slush, and then rode the bike, waiting to see who showed up. Rhonda not at class this morning, after a tumble down the stairs last night left her sore ribs. Jan showed up and I kept her company a while, then back in for more coffee and to check on my spouse, who is moving slowly, but seems to be generally ok.

Sunday Jan 17, 2010 #

9 AM

Running 41:00 [3] 3.5 mi (11:43 / mi)
weight:164.5lbs

Stratton Brook with Chris and Rhonda. Plan was to do the cross country course and measure it, to see if I have missed a turn. Somehow, despite sitting in the charger all night, the forerunner was dead. Some sort of connection flaw, I guess, so the course remains unmeasured. Trails and park road much icier than I would have imagined, so a gingerly and careful pace.

Saturday Jan 16, 2010 #

9 AM

Running race 24:31 5.01 km (4:53 / km) vdot: 39.3
ahr:163 max:177 weight:164.5lbs shoes: NB MT840

Snowstorm 5K. Traveled with Rhonda, George and Lyn. Saw PG there. Much faster time than I anticipated, so that was good. Warmest weather in several weeks, it seems.
1 PM

Note

Back from the race, and feeling kind of beat. Didn't stop Rhonda from taking me out on a dog walk over to the top of the hill at Cherry Brook Farm. Really tired after that.

Friday Jan 15, 2010 #

8 AM

cycling (spinning bike) 30:00 [3]
weight:164lbs

crossfit 20:00 [3]

exercises of Rhonda's choosing, incl kettlebells, situps back extensions, shoulder presses, etc.
2 PM

Hike 1:26:10 [1] 4.14 mi (20:48 / mi)

at Peoples state Forest with Rhonda and the dogs. Snow melting, and missing completely on large stretches.

Thursday Jan 14, 2010 #

4 PM

Running (woods run) 33:47 2.81 mi (12:01 / mi)
ahr:148 max:187 shoes: NB MT840

same run as yesterday, except with yaktrax. They made me feel more stable on the downhills, maybe helped me maintain forward progress on the ups. HR says I was working harder, but I am highly skeptical of the max reading. Includes a stop of maybe 45s to call for Sassy, who had wandered off further than usual. Snow diminishing and softening, a few spots with open water on the trail, but pond ice still very thick. It looks like at least 6", maybe more.

Wednesday Jan 13, 2010 #

6 AM

yoga-pilates 1:00:00 [3]

Morning class. Generally stiff and sore this morning, especially shoulders, wrists, right arm. Don't know why.
1 PM

Running (woods run) 35:54 2.83 mi (12:41 / mi)
ahr:139 max:153 shoes: NB MT840

modified Art Sweeton loop, with Sassy. Hazel was miffed not to be invited, but she seems to be of an age when she shouldn't be taken running any more. This was Sassy's first time, on the other hand, and she liked it just fine. Left the yaktrax at home, and it was a bit slippery. This was a bit longer than usual, because I went around via the boy scout bridge on the way out, and around the top of the smaller fence on the way back. Looking at the garmin track, though, it doesn't seem to make much difference.

Tuesday Jan 12, 2010 #

2 PM

Hike 1:10:24 [2] 5.66 km (12:26 / km)
weight:164.5lbs

Brisk perambulation at Peoples State Forest with Rhonda and the dogs. Trying valiantly to keep up with the speedy Rhonda, but unwilling to run in my boots and winter gear. Includes several minutes at the end trying to coax Sassy back from something interesting in the woods, when I forgot to turn off the forerunner.

Monday Jan 11, 2010 #

6 AM

yoga-pilates 50:00 [3]
weight:165.5lbs

Most of Rhonda's morning class. Got there a bit late. Stayed up a bit watching the excellent Harvard Beats Yale 29-29. Ok, it was excellent for me, as I knew some of those guys and was very familiar with others, and I was among the stunned fans stumbling out of Harvard Stadium on that day over 40 years ago.
8 AM

Hike 27:38 [1] 1.19 mi (23:12 / mi)

shortish dog hike with Rhonda, although Rhonda insisted on jogging much of it, for which I was way overdressed.

Sunday Jan 10, 2010 #

8 AM

Hike 50:00 [1] 2.0 mi (25:00 / mi)

With Rhonda and the dogs, out on the ice. Only 2 degrees when we left, but wind not too bad, and yaktrax kept me upright on the windswept sections of ice.
10 AM

Running 31:00 [3] 5.0 km (6:12 / km)

From Pleasant Valley with Rhonda. Not sure why running along the river was the right idea on a cold and windy day, but I went with the program. Hamstring sore. In the rush of getting dressed, forgot the forerunner.

Saturday Jan 9, 2010 #

3 PM

Orienteering race 34:40 3.38 km (10:15 / km)
ahr:142 max:166 shoes: NB MT840

Course B at WCOC winter meeting from Rick and Susie's. Cell phone orienteering with Rhonda guiding me through point 5 and then turning it over to Jim Henderson. A little glitch where I stood still for what seems to be 1:15 as Jim figured out where I was, but otherwise went fine, and I was surprised generally by how well I could keep moving. Great fun. Rhonda also did quite well as the runner when it was her turn.

Friday Jan 8, 2010 #

6 AM

cycling (spinning) 10:00 [3]
weight:165lbs

Out for morning class, but the girls wanted to spin, so did that until a fourth showed up (only 4 bikes).

Hike 26:00 [3] 2.0 mi (13:00 / mi)

moved to treadmill at a brisk walking pace (4.6-4.8)

crossfit 15:00 [3]

reprise of the workout we did a couple of days ago: 3 circuits of situps, back extensions and 1/4 mile treadmill run at 7:30 pace.
11 AM

Note

About an hour and a half with chainsaw in the woods, clearing broken stuff and cutting little stashes of firewood. Both sides of the western edge of the big fence. Took down a couple of large broken trees along the edge of the clearcut, but others were just too scary. Weather pretty nice: 20ish, sunny, little wind. Warm enough to have my sleeves rolled up.
3 PM

Note

Another two tanks of chainsaw gas, basically same area. Wind had picked up a bit, and it got damper and colder, and kind of uncomfortable by the end. This is the first time I've made it through 3 hours of chainsaw in one day in a long time, but stiffened up in the last half hour, and my arm was starting to ache. Maybe 3 tanks in one day is enough for now.

Thursday Jan 7, 2010 #

6 AM

cycling (spinning) 20:00 [1]

got out to the gym late this am after a late night at Bd of Selectmen's meeting. Rhonda was already out there spinning with her friends.

Wednesday Jan 6, 2010 #

6 AM

yoga-pilates 1:00:00 [3]

Rhonda's morning class

Tuesday Jan 5, 2010 #

6 AM

cycling (spinning bike) 20:00 [3]

with Rhonda and Sheryl

crossfit 15:00 [3]

modified workout of the day. Three rounds, each round 20 GHD situps, 20 back extensions, run 400 M on the treadmill. Most days I look at the workout of the day and shake my head, because it involves doing something with the arms that would not be good for me, but today was pretty accessible.
7 AM

Note

Pleasant if chilly hike with Rhonda and the dogs, including a perambulation of the well-frozen Big Down Marsh. The wind really whips across, and mostly the ice is clear and smooth, with patches of thin snow. Hazel quickly figured out that putting together a route that stayed mostly on snow was a lot easier, as the ice is really slippery. Not as windy as Sunday when we did the same walk. That day I couldn't get enough traction to overcome the wind and had to run and slide a lot until I got past the wind tunnel in the center, struggling to stay upright. Rhonda was wearing Yaktrax and having a pretty good time laughing at me. Both days I had resolved to bring the camera and to strap on my 305, but forgot by the time I put my boots on. Maybe next time.
2 PM

Hike 54:40 [1] 2.17 mi (25:12 / mi)

Similar hike to this morning, with Rhonda, Tony and the dogs.

Monday Jan 4, 2010 #

5 AM

yoga-pilates 1:00:00 [3]

Morning class

Sunday Jan 3, 2010 #

Hike 10:00 [3]

on the treadmill at 4.8, waiting for Rhonda to finish spinning
6 AM

cycling (spinning bike) 30:00 [3] 6.8 mi (4:25 / mi)

In the gym with Rhonda. Quit when my R quad started acting up.

Friday Jan 1, 2010 #

cycling (spinning bike) 35:00 [3] 8.5 mi (4:07 / mi)

with Rhonda and Sheryl, fairly early. R & I got up at 4, greeted by Zack, who was still up. killing orcs or whoever you kill at WoW.

weights 15:00 [3]

mostly bench presses and shoulder presses, after cycling, or perhaps during, as the girls were still spinning.

Rowing Machine 13:25 [3] 3.0 km (4:28 / km)

Had planned on 5K, but I haven't been doing this, and it felt like a strain in several places. Have to sneak up on it.

Note

Zack's friend Matt slid off the driveway a bit, and Zack went charging off to get the pickup truck and some tow straps, but it seemed a discreet approach was better - just back it down to the turnaround spot. Zack was a bit disappointed. If he had brought a real tow strap I might have let him have a go, but he only brought some tie down straps, and I couldn't see any good coming of it.
