Rhonda's morning group. A little slow getting there, but it usually runs 1:20 to 1:30 anyway.

Rowing Machine 11:30 [3] 2.5 km (4:36 / km)

part of the "fitness challenge" with my cousin Matt, which he had announced to include various activities including running, elliptical and rowing machine. We started on what was to be 25 minutes with me on rower and him on elliptical, but he lost interest, so this was all of it.

With PG around Peoples State Forest, in some not too deep and fairly firm snow. Not slippery except on steep slopes. First run in about a month, which turned out ok. But mostly just pleasant company.

special edition of the morning class. Jan had called to convene this, but she slept in, resulting in much grief later in the day. A surprise visitor was baby Zoe, who demonstrated a very fine upward facing dog position, the precision and extension of which was unattainable by the other participants.

Rhonda's morning class, well attended. Got up early enough that I had finished the NY Times and made it out to the barn for the start. Followed up with some weight exercises, including three sets of bench presses, three sets of shoulder presses, GHD situps, kettlebell swings.

Rhonda's morning class - lots of girls, including two college freshmen home for Christmas. And then some bench presses and shoulder presses, trying to spiff up my shoulder.

morning class, sort of. Not the traditional class, but rode the bike for about half an hour and then did a bunch of weight work. Jan was on the bike churning furiously. Made me wish I had her hooked up to a generator.

yoga-pilates 1:00:00 [3]

morning class, with a few extra exercises at the end for my shoulders. Rhonda has been nursing a sore back and ran the show from her bike.

Note

A walk with the dogs and Rhonda. Yesterday it was slippery and Rhonda was a bit anxious because her knee has been bothering her. She was afraid she would slip and injure it. So today we strapped on yaktrax, and Rhonda was remarkably enlivened. She started jogging and I hustled to keep up with her. We ended up jogging most of the route, in snowboots and yaktrax. No trouble for the dogs to keep up, of course.

Note

Another chainsaw interlude. This is getting easier as I keep doing it, and I'm cleaning up sections of forest. Took down a bunch of large mountain laurels, in addition to clearing several broken oak limbs in various stages of being hung up on their way down from the crowns. Working today in the vicinity of night-o #8 long/#6 short. No sign of Mike Galler's SI stick, but it is under snow now anyway, and since he never found #8, who knows where it might be. A lot of firewood to get out of there. I will try today with a sled to see if that helps extract it.

I recently purchased a stump vise. This was a really satisfactory acquisition. I was amazed by how much more efficient it is to sharpen the chain. I mounted it on a leftover plank from the boy scout bridge project and sharpened on the tailgate of my pickup truck. Really fast and easy.

Note

Had dinner with two old friends of over 30 years standing. Hadn't seen either one in at least a few years, and they hadn't seen each other in more than 10. I was very close with these guys mostly in my 30s and we certainly had a lot to do with how each other's lives turned out. Fun to see them, and makes me wonder how it is that I don't see these guys more often. One of them lives in Glastonbury (maybe 40 minutes or so) and the other south of Boston.

Note

third day in last four for chainsaw work. Best day on my back and forearm, so a bit of progress, and a pile of wood to split this weekend. Remarkable how a little effort can clean up an area that I've been walking by and grousing about all year.

part of Rhonda's morning class, and a few exercises after for shoulder, particularly

Note

Another couple of hours on firewood maintenance, mostly chainsawing large branches that had fallen near trails. I would have dealt with this last winter except for the shoulder operation, and would have dealt with it this summer or fall except for the forearm strain. Forearm still protesting, but much less, and I'm being careful with it. Made it through two tanks of gas, and quit because I had a call scheduled, not because I was exhausted, so that is some progress. I've been using my smaller, less powerful saw, which seems to be working fine. The big saw is just too much for me to handle right now. A sharp blade makes all the difference.

Saturday Dec 12, 2009 #

Note

nothing overtly loggable, but a vigorous outdoor day, managing firewood and starting a program of clearing broken stuff in the forest, two compatible activities. Ran the chainsaw for about an hour with only a few forearm twinges, so maybe my forearm is finally on the mend. In keeping with the tree-based day, put up the christmas tree with Jessica.

Two loops with Rhonda and the dogs, one including our friend Julie. Around most of the night o course on the second loop.

Been meaning to do this for a while. See if it is more friendly to my glute than running. Not so far.

Rhonda's very lightly attended morning class, or actually about half of it. I had been experiencing some serious alertness between 2 and 3 am, but fought it off and then slept in until 6, so I arrived late. I wasn't expecting anyone to be there, with about 5-6" of wet snow, but there was a car, and two hardy yoginis, so class was on.

Note

first yowsa! management activity of the season. Got the plow mostly on, but the plow lights weren't working and couldn't quite figure it out, so back to the house to get my glasses, which revealed the secret at once - the plug was upside down.

Plowed the driveway, took care of my three "customers" and got the trash down, all before coffee and breakfast.

Snowshoe 40:00 [3]

with Rhonda and the dogs. Sassy, who has more energy than sense, bounding ahead and then stopping to dig ice out of her pads. The more experienced Hazel calmly following in the snowshoe tracks. Usual dog walk route, not dissimilar from short night-o course, with a bit less thrashing.

Sunday Dec 6, 2009 #

yoga-pilates 1:00:00 [3]

Rhonda's morning class, special edition for orienteers. Started later (7 am) and less emphasis on the interminable sets of crunches and forearm planks. In attendance: Ross & Sam, Judy (and Jeff at the end), Marie & Mike, Susie, Barb and Dave, Kissy, PG. Thence back for a really fine breakfast.
