cycling 1:49:00 [3] 24.3 mi (4:29 / mi)

From Panhandle Rd in WT out State Rd through Chilmark to Lobsterville Rd, back via Moshup's trail and Middle Rd. Checked the bike computer against the Chilmark Rd Race course: 3.10 - close enough. Interesting to go by all the familiar landmarks, and of course it is incredibly beautiful.

State police cars gone from the driveway where the Obamas stayed - things back to normal in these parts.

Sunday Aug 30, 2009 #

Running 1:03:00 [3] 6.0 mi (10:30 / mi)

From our friend Susan's house on Panhandle Rd in West Tisbury to Tiasquam Valley Preserve and thence to Waskosim's and back. Tiasquam Valley is new since we lived there and pretty fine, both in itself and for access.

Hike 30:00 [3] 2.0 mi (15:00 / mi)

Tiasquam Valley Preserve with Rhonda and a reluctant Zack, visiting the trails we didn't run on this morning.

Note

Hope springs eternal. Saw this article and promptly took steps to acquire a flexbar. I am now 4+ months into a bout of tennis elbow. It has mostly left my elbow, but rages on in my forearm.

Saturday Aug 29, 2009 #

Running 43:40 [3] 4.0 mi (10:55 / mi)

With Rhonda in a pretty steady rain at Waskosim's Rock, including a ceremonial kiss at the rock where we were married. Trails were puddles. Fun, though.

Note
(rest day)

A day off to rest tired legs. There was talk about a run, a ride, or a trip to the yoga studio, but I was also trying to get some stuff done and still be ready to leave for the Vineyard at noon, so none of that happened.

Another weird thing: the controller for the larger of the electric deer exclusion fences was ripped open and the guts hanging out. what is that all about? Lightning? Four legged vandalism? Two legged vandalism? Inscrutable. Anyway, it is temporarily safe for the deer to come in and munch on tasty oak saplings. They shouldn't get used to it!

Thursday Aug 27, 2009 #

Running 1:26:26 [3] 8.4 mi (10:17 / mi)
weight:163lbs

From PV to Riverton on E. River Rd and back, with Rhonda and Marge. Marge is training for a half marathon and Rhonda was riding herd on us. I was having a lot of difficulty, with a sore back and very sore upper hamstrings. Included one five minute walk break each way.

Note

Some of the recent anxieties resolved:

Sassy is greatly improved - maybe 90% or so. Running around, playing with Hazel and enjoying life again. Still on doxycycline for a couple more weeks.

Internet is back up. Turns out the problem was the cable from the house to the first pole, not the modem. In this age of specialization, the cable guy draped a new cable across the driveway from the pole to the house, and said he would notify the other guys who will pull it through the conduit under the driveway, and they'll come in a day or so.

cycling 49:00 [3] 12.0 mi (4:05 / mi)

From Pleasant Valley, part way up Hogback Rd and back, with Chris late in the day. Kind of cool out.

Wednesday Aug 26, 2009 #

Gym 1:15:00 [3]
weight:163.5lbs

Rhonda's morning class. Made it all the way through, and felt like I really need it, but it was certainly stressful.

cycling 38:00 [3] 8.6 mi (4:25 / mi)

a loop around the river from Pleasant Valley. Got a little dark and the wind came up, and that was enough to have me cut my ride short. Feeling pretty ouchy and lethargic.

Tuesday Aug 25, 2009 #

Running 57:09 [3] 5.7 mi (10:02 / mi)

"easy" run along E River Rd from Pleasant Valley and back, with Rhonda. Upper hamstrings pretty tired and sore.

Note

These have been some trying days. Sassy has come down with Lyme disease and was going downhill despite a bunch of medicine and two vet visits, so we took her to the pet ER last night in West Htfd. Got a full workup and some pain meds, and a conclusion that she should start to feel better, which she did this morning. She is still quite lethargic and pretty stiff, but at least she is mobile. By yesterday she wasn't walking at all and had to be carried outside to pee. Pretty awful. So that's looking up a bit.

The other mischief is the thunderstorm on Friday took out the cable tv and internet, and the ever helpful comcast is not coming to fix it until Thursday. Ironically enough they took the last call I made in as an opportunity to try to sell me phone service. I declined as politely as I could, noting that if I had their fine phone service I wouldn't be talking with them right now, would I?

Running race 22:49 [4] 3.0 mi (7:36 / mi)

Westfield XC race. I have been working toward a sub-23 for a while, and got there I think more because of course familiarity and gritting my teeth through some of the splits than because I am any faster.

Splits: 5:36 past the start, 7:30 at 1 mile, 9:50 at start of lollipop, 17:31 end of the lollipop.

Chris came along and also had his best time.

Sunday Aug 23, 2009 #

cycling 51:00 [3] 12.4 mi (4:07 / mi)

Around W Simsbury and W Granby with Chris.

Saturday Aug 22, 2009 #

Running 45:44 [3] 4.4 mi (10:24 / mi) +245m 8:52 / mi

Down Hanson andi back via Bunker Hill. Plan was to go easy. Not sure it was easy enough. Achilles a little sore again, and iced it when I got home.

Thursday Aug 20, 2009 #

cycling 1:37:00 [3] 22.5 mi (4:19 / mi)
weight:165.5lbs

Up to the top of Sandy Brook Rd and back to Pleasant Valley with Rhonda and her friend Marge. Not so light when we started, maybe 5 minutes to 6, but light enough.

Wednesday Aug 19, 2009 #

Running race 25:54 [4] 5.0 km (5:11 / km) +170m 4:26 / km
shoes: NB MT840

Forest Park 5K. Clint was also there and had a nice visit with him before and after. Not during, though, as Clint ran a speedy 22:29. This was a PR for me on the course, 37 seconds better than last time. Generally felt a bit stronger, which was excellent. 20th place out of 47.

Rhonda decided not to come this afternoon to shoot for the vacant F57 record, but Seth Roberts and his wife did show up and she got it.

Tuesday Aug 18, 2009 #

cycling 1:12:00 [3] 17.5 mi (4:07 / mi)

up Sandy brook rd a ways and back, running out of time. Also spent a bit of time rescuing a damsel with a flat tire and no pump, but that only took a minute or two.

Monday Aug 17, 2009 #

Running race 23:08 [4] 3.0 mi (7:43 / mi)
weight:167lbs shoes: NB MT840

Stanley Park 3 miler. Hot and humid. Started well, with some good early splits. Thought I had a chance at sub-23, but not enough left at the end. 5:38 going by the start; 7:38 at the mile, 9:54 start of the lollipop, 17:48 end of the lollipop. 16th of 29. Lots of kids - 10 were 16 and under.

Sunday Aug 16, 2009 #

Note

Arrived home this evening after a long day, driving from San Marcos to IAH, and then the flight, interrupted by thunderstorms in Charlotte.

Interesting AOWN moment: took the dogs out for a walk at dusk and they found some entertainment along the trail. When we got in, I found they had matching goatees of porcupine quills, which took a while to extract. Sorry I didn't take a picture, but I didn't think about it until after all the quills were out.

Interesting personality difference. Hazel stolidly and patiently waits while I pull the quills out. I know it hurts, but she doesn't complain. Sassy twists, pulls, bites and otherwise carries on.

Saturday Aug 15, 2009 #

Running (woods run) 1:34:00 [3] 7.0 mi (13:26 / mi)

With Rhonda on the Purgatory Creek trail in San Marcos. Very rocky, and once we got to the end we spent some time trying to navigate a shorter way back, but gave up and just headed back. Interesting AOWN experience. Really a lot of deer in this park (and elsewhere in San Marcos), and along the trail the largest concentration of antlions I have ever encountered.

Friday Aug 14, 2009 #

Hike 1:30:00 [3] 6.0 mi (15:00 / mi)

Around Nassau Bay with Rhonda and Chris. Caught them for the third and fourth of their 4 3-mile laps.

Thursday Aug 13, 2009 #

Rowing Machine 10:05 [3] 2.29 km (4:24 / km)

concept 2 session. First one since shoulder surgery in December. Seems to be ok with my forearm, too, but pretty hard overall. Tough on my wind, and felt it particularly in my quads, which are apparently too tight to be comfortable all the way forward in my stroke. Apparently a lot of work to do.

Wednesday Aug 12, 2009 #

Gym 45:00 [3]

A bit of the morning class, and some work on the shoulders. Muggy.

Tuesday Aug 11, 2009 #

Running 42:08 [3] 4.3 mi (9:48 / mi)

out and back from PV with Rhonda. 21:35 our, 20:33 back.

Had the strange visual blip I get once in a while. It has happened maybe 15 or so times in the last maybe 18 years, but maybe four times in the last year. It generally occurs under circumstances like today, a humid day, in a shady area. I see little flashing pinwheels in the center of both eyes. Generally starts after I've been running about 10 minutes, although once it happened on a bike ride. It is the same in both eyes. It generally goes away in 1 or 2 minutes, although the prior time I had it, it lasted 10 minutes. Once it goes away, it doesn't come back. Not particularly tired, or putting in a lot of effort when it happens. So what is this weird thing?

Monday Aug 10, 2009 #

Gym 30:00 [3]

private session with the master yogini. Nobody else showed up this morning.

Running race 23:26 [4] 3.0 mi (7:49 / mi)
shoes: NB MT840

Stanley Park 3 mile xcountry race in Westfield. Very humid, lightly attended. My best placing (14th of 39), but not my best time. Legs felt heavy. 5:46 passing the start, 10:06 start of the lollipop, 18:00 end of the lollipop. Passed quite a few folks on the lollipop and just after.

Sunday Aug 9, 2009 #

cycling 1:25:54 [3] 20.3 mi (4:14 / mi)
weight:163.5lbs

Up Sandy Brook Rd a little farther than yesterday, with Rhonda and Chris. This was Chris's first 20 mile ride, and he was excellent company. Very congenial, and we arrived home again just minutes before the sprinkles.

Running 23:07 [2] 2.2 mi (10:30 / mi)

Short and slow with Rhonda in Pleasant Valley. Her first try at running since her fall last week.

Saturday Aug 8, 2009 #

cycling 1:19:00 [3] 19.1 mi (4:08 / mi)

Same as yesterday - to Pisgah Rd and back to PV. A little faster with more air in the tires:)

Friday Aug 7, 2009 #

cycling 1:22:00 [3] 19.1 mi (4:18 / mi)

Up Sandy Brook to Pisgah Mtn Rd and back to PV. Felt very sluggish, but good to get out.

Thursday Aug 6, 2009 #

Running race 23:50 [4] 5.0 km (4:46 / km)
shoes: NB MT840

Holyoke Elks 5K run. Big crowd tonight - 106. Started a bit fast, and I found the last half really hard. I had thought I would pick up some places in the last half mile, but I got there and only had enough left to just hang on. Still, another PR.

Wednesday Aug 5, 2009 #

Running (woods run) 16:53 [4] 2.0 km (8:27 / km) +80m 7:02 / km
weight:167.5lbs shoes: NB MT840

Sprint A. First time in a few weeks, and felt a bit sluggish to start, but seemed to have a little more power midway. A new PR. The old PR was with open gates (17:20), so this was quite a bit better, figuring at least 20 seconds for opening and closing 4 gates.

Running (woods run) 14:19 [4] 2.0 km (7:10 / km) +70m 6:06 / km
shoes: NB MT840

Sprint B, after a 20 minute break. Much better than just a 5 minute break, but it still takes a lot out of me to do the 2nd one. Not quite a PR (14:17) but close.

Note

Injury update:

Rhonda is making a fine recovery. Yesterday her knee was pretty gooshy looking, but today much settled down, smaller bandage, and she even did a bout on the elliptical without distress. Well on her way to recovery.

Alas, I have re-injured the elbow I got the cortisone shot for a few weeks back. Most distressing.

Monday Aug 3, 2009 #

Running 57:00 [3] 5.0 mi (11:24 / mi)

Very pleasant excursion in Spring Lake and Annadel. Parked at Channel Drive near the Cobblestone trail head. Ran back along the road to Violetti Rd entrance to Spring Lake, then down to the Sprint finish area and along the lake S to the bridge to the Rough Go trail into Annadel. Up the aptly named Rough Go to Cobblestone, then beyond to Orchard. Orchard around to Cobblestone and then back down Cobblestone to the parking area. Splits: Bridge from Spring Lake: 18:30; Rough Go at Cobblestone 32:17, Rough Go/Orchard 34:59; Orchard/Cobblestone 46:47.

Sunday Aug 2, 2009 #

Running 23:00 [3]

uphill on Cobblestone trail with Jess and Rhonda, until Rhonda tripped and smashed her knee on a rock. A little laying around and moaning, and then she got up to try to limp back out. Literally three minutes after impact and less than 1 minute after starting to walk we met a very kindly gentleman with a backpack full of first aid gear and a lovely manner. He did a very fine job of washing out the wound and dressing it, and told us about other folks he had fixed up along the trail. He had been an army medic in Vietnam, and said he couldn't get it out of his system. Then the slow walk back down - took an hour, then a trip to the urgent care system for some debridement and further cleaning and a prescription for antibiotics. She is tough and she'll bounce back. Tough to see her in pain.

Saturday Aug 1, 2009 #

Hike 1:50:00 [3] 6.5 mi (16:55 / mi)

Annadel Park with Zack. Out Channel Trail to N. Burma to Louis to Lake Ilsanjo. Around the lake and then back via Rough Go and Cobblestone. Fairly vigorous pace and harder than jogging. Zack was a good trouper, if not delighted with the operation.
