PT exercises 30:00 [3]

Got up at 3:30 and resolved my transportation issues: the mediation fell apart, so going to see Kathy today instead of tomorrow, and flying home early on Sat instead of on the redeye. Once that was done, a little time on my hands, so went to work on the shoulder in the hotel gym. Tried some heavier weights, which seemed very beneficial, and some elastic band work and stretching. Also some dips and pullups on the gravitron machine, which was very nice since I am not strong enough to do these unaided right now.

Running 30:00 [3] 2.6 mi (11:32 / mi)

Time is an estimate, since I didn't check the watch when I left. Still a little time to kill before heading out, since the rental car counter at the hotel doesn't open until 7:30, so ran up Nob Hill and back, at a leisurely pace.

Note

Kathy is released from bed rest, with just a few weeks to go in her pregnancy, and this was her first excursion. We went to lunch at the Brasserie at the Hyatt, and walked back home along the Santa Rosa Creek trail. Then I hoofed it back later to pick up the car. She did very well.

Running 49:00 [3] 4.0 mi (12:15 / mi)

around San Francisco, and including a stint up Telegraph Hill, which is steeper than Ratlum, if not as long as, say, the Devil's Elbow. Hard to decide whether to do this or crash, as it was a long day, getting up at 3:30 EDT and not doing this until 6 pm PDT.

a short session working on my shoulder in the hotel gym

Running (woods run) 19:43 [3] 2.0 km (9:52 / km)
weight:167lbs

One of the sprint courses. I am about ready to declare them done. There are a couple of spots I would like to clean up the winter's deadfall, but generally satisfied with where the courses go.

Note

Things are looking up in Rhonda's flower garden.

From Rhonda's garden May 26 2009

It has been a slow spring, but getting better.

Running (woods run) 17:30 [3] 2.0 km (8:45 / km)

And the other sprint course - same distance, but a bit less climb and more on trails and more open woods.

Note

AOWN - and not in a good way. This is a really bad year for ticks. Maybe now that I have twice as many dogs there is easier transmission, but it seems way worse than that. I had four on me today, which is perhaps a bit higher than average, but not really unusual. Most days I have at least one. Rhonda is also beset, as are the dogs, despite being dosed regularly with Frontline. Yikes!

Note

tick count now up to 6 today. That seems to be a new PR.

Running 47:00 [3]

Along the Blue Ridge Parkway - kind of hot and not really into it. 25 out and 22 back, including a couple of short walk breaks on the way back when I passed some dogs who seemed a little excitable. Maybe it is more uphill on the way out on this section, although generally up and down.

Running 18:47 [3] 2.0 km (9:24 / km)

A quick spin around one of the sprint courses before heading to the airport for the trip to NC to see my mother. Sorry to miss all the good and convenient O this weekend - Ansonia and Mt Tom both at or under one hour from my house.

PT exercises 45:00 [3]

shoulder exercises. I think I have crossed the line from frustrated to discouraged, but I am keeping at it.

Tuesday May 19, 2009 #

Orienteering 22:00 [3] 2.2 km (10:00 / km)

test run of one of the sprint courses. A little too thick in one spot, so I'll have to revise it.

Orienteering 59:51 [4] *** 6.2 km (9:39 / km) +135m 8:42 / km
spiked:11/13c shoes: Yellow NB T840

Long Distance race at Sprague Park, Buffalo A-meet. Generally a pretty successful run, and kept my nose to the grindstone toward the end in hopes of being under an hour. Only one bad leg - no trouble finding the control, but not the best route and poorly executed - lots of climbing over weird stuff early instead of finding the trail route, and then missed the trail run at the end. Last 4 or five controls a track meet along the road/cleared areas.

Orienteering race 44:38 [4] *** 3.3 km (13:32 / km) +125m 11:22 / km
spiked:10/16c shoes: Yellow NB T840

Hunters Creek Park - middle distance course at Buffalo A-meet. Got really confused by the map and the area, leading to lots of mistakes

Orienteering race 14:12 [5] *** 2.2 km (6:27 / km) +35m 5:59 / km
spiked:14/14c shoes: Yellow NB T840

Sprint at Emery Park, Buffalo A-meet. Wicked fast race, and really enjoyed it, although I felt like I was running in wet cement. Some pretty fast times were posted. Technically, this was probably the easiest sprint I have been in, but lots of fun.

Note

First golf outing of the season, 9 holes at Rockledge with some friends. Good that I didn't arrive early enough to hit practice balls, as I would have left my game there. A fair amount of discomfort in both my left shoulder and my right forearm (a pretty bad case of tennis elbow the last 6 weeks), and several sideways shots in the first two holes, but then settled down and played reasonably well. Shots were about 2 clubs shorter - not surprising. Still had a birdie and a couple of pars, so a success, and home to the ice pack.

Running 28:02 [3] 2.7 mi (10:23 / mi)
weight:167lbs shoes: NB MT840

Art Sweeton loop (26:57) and then down the driveway to get trashcan and mail.

Event: Billygoat

Orienteering race 2:19:38 [4] 10.7 km (13:03 / km) +305m 11:25 / km

31st annual Billygoat. Pretty good run, although not too spunky through the woods. Lost a couple of minutes at #2, where instead of just following the stream of folks I listened to someone nearby who thought we were going too low and spent some time milling around. Skipped 4 and took left fork to #5, where I got frustrated by finding a likely looking boulder with a vetting streamer on it. Then ok, and mostly by myself, until catching up with J-J and Stephen around #10, then following a distant Jim Henderson and Pete Bunschuh on the long trail route to #13, and eventually getting into a big pack, including Tony Federer, Steve Tarry, Paul Bennett, Phil Bricker and a few others. When the pack broke up after #20 I stayed with Steve T, and lost about a minute to others who seem to have gone the long way around on the trail. Pack of 7 at the penultimate control, of whom I was 7th, but had a nice finishing sprint to lead them all in.

Note

Victory for Erik today at the Billygoat, the most prestigious orienteering event in this hemisphere. Nicely done!

Running (woods run) 28:00 [4] 3.2 km (8:45 / km) +130m 7:16 / km
weight:167.5lbs

RhinO run at Ratlum. A PR, and PRs for 8 of the 15 legs. Worst leg was #12, where it was getting quite a bit thicker, slowing me down, and making me hesitate a bit near the control.

PT exercises 40:00 [3]

working on my shoulder while yoga class went on. First time since I left for CA, and it does make the shoulder ache less.

Note

Report from Nysse on today's track meet. He won a whisker close 3200 m. run against the famous Ryan King of Tolland. Pretty exciting. His report was that the first lap was 20 s slower than any of the others, because neither wanted to lead, but then it was faster and faster. Haven't had the personal interview yet, as he is off watching NHL playoffs at his friend's house.

Orienteering 1:48:24 [3] 5.6 km (19:21 / km) +200m 16:25 / km

Green Day 2 at Boggs Mt. Had extreme difficulty finding the first two controls, both in rather vague areas, and both I went close to several times, but lost about 1/2 hr between them. After that things were better, if not great. Still, very nice courses, the weather broke and was clear, and it was a fine time in a very nice place.

Orienteering race 53:17 [3] *** 3.2 km (16:39 / km)
spiked:13/14c

Middle Green course at Boggs Mt meet. Very rainy and muddy. Downhills were treacherous, uphills only negotiable by holding onto things. Not much I could run. One significant error on first, where I stopped part way down at the Blue control to try to figure out where I was, finally seeing patch of green further downhill that led me in. Otherwise very good navigation, hitting all the rest right on and right where I was expecting them.

Orienteering 22:00 [3] *** 2.5 mi (8:48 / mi)
spiked:7/12c

Team Trials sprint at Spring Lake. Many mistakes, culminating in mispunching at #11. So what was wrong? Over-running several, standing around next to a few and not seeing them, and a clue sheet that turned to papier mache in the rain. Didn't realize clues were on the map, too, but I hate unfolding the map and looking for them anyway. How did I miss #11? Clue was lone tree, and the one I punched was also by a lone tree, a little further on and much more obvious. I was checking codes up until then, but my clue sheet was useless by that point. Just a ball of mush. And certainly I would have been flummoxed by #12 if I hadn't been a late starter and heard all the stories of people running by it to punch the white control further on.

Tomorrow I will bring tape to the start to protect my clue sheet.
