Gym 45:00 [3]
weight:171lbs

Rhonda's morning class. Very achy, and I ducked out when they got to the warriors part of it, as raising my right arm was too tender to be any fun.

Appt with the doctor for Wednesday, where we will talk about both my R shoulder and R knee. Pretty sure I will get the shoulder fixed ASAP, and at least he will order an MRI of the knee. I'm not convinced the knee is a lost cause, but I'm now at over 4 months and very little improvement.

Hike 1:00:00 [3] 3.0 mi (20:00 / mi)

One more Block Island excursion before a leisurely breakfast and heading off to the boat. Up along the beach past North light and to the end of the spit at the north tip and back. Bright and beautiful, cold and breezy. AOWN: a gaggle of brant and a pair of oldsqaws. And lots of gulls. Also lots of deer on the island. Birds chirpier in the morning than they are in Canton yet.

Hike 6:00:00 [3] 18.0 mi (20:00 / mi)

This was actually three separate hikes at Block Island with our friend Rick Lohrer. A pretty good tour of walking paths and beaches. Much smaller and more open than the Vineyard we are familiar with, so more expansive views, all of them involving water. Beautiful. And tiring. AOWN: Visit with Rick and Amy's camels. Naila (above) and Kalila

cycling (spinning bike) 30:00 [3] 7.0 mi (4:17 / mi)
weight:172.5lbs

with Rhonda, as the girls did not show up this morning

weights 20:00 [3]

miscellaneous stuff, including 3 sets of BP, leg and ab exercises under Rhonda's tutelage.

Hike 1:00:00 [3]

At Peoples State Forest with Rhonda and Hazel. North facing slopes still a bit icy, but generally pretty good conditions. Rhonda keeps a brisk pace.

Wednesday Mar 26, 2008 #

Note
weight:172lbs

Ready to head out for a run with Rhonda and Kathleen, when Tony drove up. I had forgotten I'd enlisted him for work today, so the run had to be shelved. Just as well, still tired from pruning.

New recent high for weight. Not too pleasing.

Tuesday Mar 25, 2008 #

cycling (spinning bike) 35:00 [3] 7.5 mi (4:40 / mi)
weight:170lbs

with the girls in the morning. Jan assembled Rhonda's new and even spiffier 5th spinning bike, so we could get the whole group pedaling.

Rowing Machine 10:00 [3] 2.1 km (4:46 / km)

gentle, to see what my knee felt like. Strangely enough the knee wasn't sore, but I had a strong pulling sensation on the lower quad. But generally ok, so maybe I can start doing this reasonably often.

PT exercises 20:00 [3]

Mostly stuff for the back and core. I am really sore after several days of pruning fruit trees.

Monday Mar 24, 2008 #

Hike 2:02:00 [3] 8.6 mi (14:11 / mi)
weight:169.5lbs

From Pleasant Valley up E River Rd to Rivertown and back down W River Rd to the start. A fairly brisk pace, making my quads a bit tender and creating a few hot spots on the feet.

AOWN: hooded mergansers on the river, and a dead beaver on the bank - maybe a confrontation with a car?

Saturday Mar 22, 2008 #

cycling (spinning bike) 45:00 [3]
weight:170lbs

Out in the gym with Rhonda, and talking to my mother on the cell phone for part of it. I talk with my mother quite a bit, but I always try to do it while I am in the car or otherwise occupied, because it doesn't happen fast, and I find it too anxiety provoking to get involved in it if I have other things to do.

weights 20:00 [3]

Including some bench presses: 10, 10 & 4 x100. Working up to a "Rhonda", but far removed from PG's lofty exploits. PG's ascendancy brings to mind the accomplishments of Mr. Robertson, Sri Chinmoy, and the most elusive achievement of all, the Stan Wagon 400 meter record.

Note

A call from Tom N, leading to the first golf outing of the season - 9 holes at Blue Fox. Once I adapted to being about 2 clubs short, not so bad, but plenty of improvement would be desirable. Ended up with a 49 after sticking two drives in the pond on the 9th.

Thursday Mar 20, 2008 #

Hike 1:00:00 [1]
weight:169.5lbs

Over at Peoples State Forest with Rhonda and Hazel. Plan was a brisk pace for two hours on the roads, but the park roads had a lot of ice, so we cut it short and came back to the car along the public road. I was expecting the park roads to be about 90% clear, but it was more like 20%.

cycling 25:00 [3]

on the spinning bike with the girls this morning

weights 25:00 [3]

miscellaneous stuff, including some bench presses. Seem to make my shoulder feel a bit better.

Monday Mar 17, 2008 #

elliptical 30:00 [3]

Hike 1:00:00 [3] 2.5 mi (24:00 / mi)

out in back with Rhonda and Hazel, more or less around the Art Sweeton loop, but with some off trail exploring. Lots of puddles on trail, so the woods were a little better. Still some icy sections.

Sunday Mar 16, 2008 #

Hike 1:00:00 [1] 2.5 mi (24:00 / mi)

With Hazel, up to Lans's fire tower and back up Doyle Road. Pretty great views from the top. Next time I'll take pictures.

elliptical 34:00 [3]

Most forward, some back, while watching Tiger stalking Bart Bryant. Being a person of somewhat impaired hearing and not being familiar with Bart Bryant, my first thought was that a famous orienteer was playing. Especially since the announcer wasn't pronouncing that first "t" very hard.

weights 15:00 [3]

A few modest exercises, including a couple of sets of bench presses. Much strengthening required before I will be able to approach the feats of Mr. G.

Friday Mar 14, 2008 #

cycling 40:00 [3] 8.8 mi (4:33 / mi)
weight:168lbs

On the spinning bike. Thought there might be a crowd, but only Sue was there. Legs pretty tired from yesterday's run.

weights 20:00 [3]

Miscellaneous exercises, including some bench presses, squats, therabands, and a few of the therapy exercises, but not many.

Hike 1:45:00 [3] 5.0 mi (21:00 / mi)
weight:168lbs

Took pity on Hazel and took her for an excursion. Plan was down through Cannon property to Shagbark and thence by Joan Kenney's to say hello, but got a bit of a late start and just saw Joan driving by as I was getting to her house. On to Cherry Brook Farm and up through the farm and to the jeep road through the Barkhamsted Land trust property and home again. Really felt my legs on the long uphill, and the knee is the most tender it's been in at least a month or so. Not a very good verdict for yesterday's run.

Thursday Mar 13, 2008 #

Running 1:19:15 [3] 8.65 mi (9:10 / mi)
weight:168lbs

CCW loop from Pleasant Valley out to Riverton. Started out thinking I would do the 5.7 mile out and back route, but felt spunky enough to continue on by and go all the way around. Longest run in quite a long while, and I'm sure I will be tired later. Up earlier than usual today, as I took Rhonda to the airport leaving at 4:30. She is off to see mom for a few days.

Tuesday Mar 11, 2008 #

cycling 30:00 [3] 7.0 mi (4:17 / mi)

With the girls in the morning. Linda hadn't been there in a while, so Kathleen had to rehash a lot of the story.

PT exercises 25:00 [3]

Miscellaneous leg exercises, perhaps fewer than usual.

Monday Mar 10, 2008 #

Gym 1:00:00 [3]

Rhonda's morning Pilates class - seemed mostly pretty challenging. Especially my shoulder was not cooperating.

Hike 1:00:00 [3] 2.5 mi (24:00 / mi)

Down the trail toward the farm and back, picking up flagging tape from yesterday, and a piece of climbing rope that had been put up as a handrail for a relatively gnarly stream crossing.

Sunday Mar 9, 2008 #

Hike 1:45:00 [3] 4.0 mi (26:15 / mi)

two trips down the mountain to Cherry Brook Farm - the first in the morning with a bunch of friends, checking conditions and marking turns, the second in the afternoon leading the Trailblazers - the youth group associated with the Canton Land Conservation Trust

Saturday Mar 8, 2008 #

cycling 30:00 [3] 7.4 mi (4:03 / mi)

On the spinning bike with Kathleen and Rhonda. More developments on the in-laws front. One thing going on is that Kathleen's mother-in-law has taken to wearing a wedding ring around, which she had not previously worn. This got Kathleen all stirred up because she finds it creepy and deceptive. Her further investigations have determined that it is not a ring that was ever associated with her wedding in the first place, and that she seems to have acquired it at a pawn shop.

So now Kathleen has determined that the time is ripe to tell this whole sordid story to her children, ages 15, 12 and 8. Being an orderly and contemplative person, she went to visit the guidance counselor at the school. The counselor listened to Kathleen's questions about how to tell her kids and how thoroughly to express her disapproval of the whole situation. So the counselor tells her it's none of the kids' business what their grandparents do with their lives, and K relays this to us like this counselor is really from outer space or something. And Rhonda and I are thinking, "yup, none of their business." But Kathleen is undeterred. We are telling her that it is certainly more than adequate (and basically unnecessary) to tell them that their grandparents are divorced, and leave all the other intricacies out of it. It will be interesting to see how this all shakes out.

weights 15:00 [3]

Miscellaneous exercises while the girls are still on the bikes and I can't take it any more. Including 3x12 bench presses at 0.5 g. Hard to believe the wiry PG is pushing up a full g 4X. Gives me something to aspire to.

Friday Mar 7, 2008 #

cycling 21:00 [3] 4.8 mi (4:22 / mi)
weight:169.5lbs

On the spinning bike, with Rhonda Jan and Kathleen. Jan was burning up the track.

PT exercises 40:00 [3]

general knee exercises, although I forgot a few.

Running 40:00 [3] 4.4 mi (9:05 / mi)

With Rhonda from Pleasant Valley - same run as Wednesday. Cold symptoms much better today, and generally a much better effort. A little knee pain, but very tolerable. Missed the first split, but others were 21:15; 10:04; 8:41. Three minutes faster than Wednesday.

Hike 40:00 [3] 2.0 mi (20:00 / mi)

Brisk walk through the woods down to Cherry Brook Farm with Rhonda and Mary Ellen. One way only as we stashed a car at the church. They are scoping out the terrain for their kids' hike on Sunday. Plenty wet, and about to get a lot wetter. Bring dry socks.

Note

The lovely Jessica called and chatted me up for a while this afternoon. She told me about a "very nice lunch" she had today with a friend. Now I have always had trouble understanding her because she is soft spoken, and I'm getting worse because my hearing is failing. I had to get her to explain, because I thought she said she had a mayonnaise lunch, and I couldn't quite picture her sitting there with a jar of Hellman's and a spoon.

Thursday Mar 6, 2008 #

Hike 40:00 [3] 2.5 mi (16:00 / mi)
weight:168.5lbs (sick)

Still feeling under the weather. Around the neighborhood with Rhonda, who just got her bottom braces in today and wasn't feeling too lively either. Many beer cans peeking through the diminished snow along the road.

Wednesday Mar 5, 2008 #

Running 43:00 [3] 4.4 mi (9:46 / mi)
weight:169lbs

From Pleasant Valley with Rhonda. Still not feeling up to snuff. 11:05; 11:00; 10:57; 9:58.

Tuesday Mar 4, 2008 #

cycling 21 [2] 4.8 mi (4 / mi)
weight:172.5lbs

On the spinning bike with the girls. I've decided I'm not sick any more, although still dealing with some of the lingering after effects. Weight is ballooning. What's that all about? Related to drugs for cough? Anyway, I'm laying off them, and about to start on a program of slimming.

PT exercises 40:00 [3]

Various leg exercises.

Snowshoe 2:15:00 [2] 3.5 mi (38:34 / mi)

Down to Cherry Brook Farm via old Stage Road, back over the crest on the CB Farm trail to Lavander and Derby Rds. With Jan and Wells Tanner, Mary Ellen, Rhonda and Laurie. Back up with Laurie and Hazel, as the others went one way only. Hazel took a lot of management to get her to leave the others, especially Wells who was sledding on the hill at the farm.

And then a much needed nap.

Sunday Mar 2, 2008 #

Ski 1:00:00 [3]
weight:168lbs (sick)

To bridge and a couple of laps around Big Down Marsh and back. A fine day, warmish. Snow a little tricky - not quite slick, but not quite sticky. Had to be a bit careful.

Saturday Mar 1, 2008 #

cycling 40:00 [2] 9.0 mi (4:27 / mi)
weight:171.5lbs (sick)

On the spinning bike with Rhonda and Kathleen this morning at 5:45, after a round of plowing. Did our driveway, Chris's next door and Kathleen's. Pretty lethargic on the bike - about 10% slower than before I got the cold, and really tired of it by 40 minutes. The girls kept going for a bit.

Snowshoe 1:45:00 [3] 3.5 mi (30:00 / mi)
weight:171.5lbs (sick)

Sticky snow. With Rhonda and Hazel down to Cherry Brook Farm and back. Postcard views, particularly of the farm, but kind of hard work. Very sweaty by the time we got back and had to take a nap. We went down going Derby Rd to Lavander to the back trail into the farm, and came back cutting across the top of the field through Joan Kenney's to Stagecoach Rd, and thence up the hill. Much shorter route on the way back. 1:05 out and :40 back.
