Running 28:56 [3] 3.2 mi (9:02 / mi)
slept:5.75 weight:164.5lbs

Around Providence this morning. First run in shorts and t-shirt since . . Tuesday in DC. Another difficult night. Was up from 1:30 to 4. Something is amiss with my digestion - bland food and not much of it seems like a good regimen for a while.

Wednesday Mar 29, 2006 #

Note
slept:2.0 weight:167.5lbs (sick)

Felt unsettled last night and couldn't sleep, upset stomach, and couldn't get warm. Pretty out of it today. I expect an early night will snap me out of it.

Tuesday Mar 28, 2006 #

Running 35:00 [2] 3.75 mi (9:20 / mi)

Around Washington before breakfast.

Monday Mar 27, 2006 #

Gym 30:00 [3]

Rhonda's 6 am class, at least as long as I could take it. Wrists and shoulder bugging me a lot, plus way too much work to do before leaving for DC

Running 16:00 [2]

Only had about 20 minutes between checking into the hotel and meeting my client, and brought my phone with me just in case. Got a call from another client after about 8 minutes, though, so chatted him up and then headed back.

Sunday Mar 26, 2006 #

weights 30:00 [3]

Out in the gym - squats, bench press, pull downs, dumbbells

Gym 20:00 [3]

Rodney Yee tape with Rhonda. Lots of pain in wrists and shoulders. This was certainly easier last year.

trail run 30:53 [3] 2.8 mi (11:02 / mi)

Art Sweeton loop, with Hazel. No pretense of trying to go fast.

Saturday Mar 25, 2006 #

Orienteering race 1:37:48 [4] *** 7.2 km (13:35 / km)
spiked:8/10c

Tarrywile WCOC meet red course. Woefully slow, but navigation ok. There was a route that crossed a large OB area. I took it seriously and went around, which added both distance and climb. First part in particular very rocky and green. Near the end there was a control description on top of a 5 m. cliff. Lost a fair amount of time and energy climbing 5 m. cliffs in the area before finding it on a 0.5 m cliff. Yikes!

Friday Mar 24, 2006 #

Running 37:00 [3] 3.8 mi (9:44 / mi)
slept:7.5

Around Roger Williams Park, mostly roads, some grass. Took one sidetrip down to look at a sort of Lincoln Memorial looking structure, but no indication of what it meant - no inscriptions or anything. Hotel was full last night so stayed in a B&B south of Providence. Big, old, well maintained, very pleasant. Running not so great - pain in the R knee, very sluggish.

Wednesday Mar 22, 2006 #

cycling (stationary bike) 30:00 [3]
slept:6.0 weight:165lbs

At the hotel in the am.

Tuesday Mar 21, 2006 #

Note

Major bear event today. The DEP came to tag and collar the bear in my woods and tag and measure the cubs. After some equipment gathering and practicing, the DEP officer shot the mom in the leg with a tranquilizer dart fitted with a radio telemetry device, in case she ran. She did not. After about 10 minutes she was woozy enough for the biologist to climb into the den and pull out the squalling babies - two fine male cubs, approximately two months old. Then, the whole party pulled mom out of the den, and submitted her to various indignities, including getting pink ear tags (#2-6) and a radio collar, and having a microchip implanted between the shoulder blades. Early estimates were that she might weigh 150, and the general range of sows is supposed to be 120 to 200, but she topped out at a healthy 228. Because she was bigger, the dosage was a little low, and she was treated to a little extra to keep her down.

The cubbies had to be held inside coats to keep them warm, and were quite cuddly. I'll try to figure out a way to post pictures, of which I have several. They were 7 and 7.5 pounds, and one of them has pleasing blonde ears and muzzle, and the other a blond chin. Mom is coal black.

The cubs will stay with mom for another year, but will all be out of the den in another month or thereabouts, which means the den can probably be a control site this summer.

After about an hour and a half, mom got pushed back into the den, and the babies in after her, arranged to be cozy, but still pretty indignant.

Quite a fine experience!

cycling (stationary bike) 30:00 [3]

NYT & Uconn women's BB at the hotel in the evening. Go Huskies!

Monday Mar 20, 2006 #

cycling (stationary bike) 30:00 [3]

With the Courant - pretty sprightly all the same.

trail run 32:00 [3] 3.0 mi (10:40 / mi)
slept:9.5 weight:166.5lbs

Art Sweeton loop with Hazel, plus a trip down to the mailbox for the mail. Kind of cold - not too good on the uphills.

Sunday Mar 19, 2006 #

Orienteering (field checking/vetting) 5:00:00 [3]

At Mashamoquet. Got a very early start (6:45) as I left the house at 5:20 to take Rhonda and Jess to the airport. Very cold. Mostly walking, and a bit of running from time to time. Met up with J-J around 10 or so and kibitzed as he cleaned up the NE part fo the map. Really tired when I got home. Watched the Huskies squeak by Kentucky and need to crash.

Saturday Mar 18, 2006 #

trail run 30:00 [3] 2.8 mi (10:43 / mi)
slept:6.0 weight:170lbs

Art Sweeton loop in the backyard with Hazel. The weight is really getting to be a problem! I have that sense of carrying a basketball around in my stomach, that I haven't had to carry since some time in '04. Just in time for March Madness. Ran into a neighbor and his two dogs. They live near the bear den, which gives me some trepidation. I'd prefer guys with dogs weren't tramping right by there. On the other hand, I don't want to explain it to him, because I am trying to keep prying eyes away from the place.

Friday Mar 17, 2006 #

cycling (stationary bike) 30:00 [3]

this morning, at the hotel, NYT

Wednesday Mar 15, 2006 #

Running 32:11 [2] 3.15 mi (10:13 / mi)

Around Providence this morning. Clear, kind of cold. Sluggish, as I often am in the mornings. A little stiff, but no apparent hamstring twinges and no knee pain.

cycling (stationary bike) 30:00 [3]

In the evening, at the hotel, with the NYT.

Monday Mar 13, 2006 #

Gym 1:00:00 [3]

Rhonda's 8 am class. Generally, this lubricates my joints pretty well, but today it was pretty painful in process. My wrists seem to be getting worse, and the shoulder is not getting any better. Also pretty sore feet. Nice crowd, though, and not as hard as a 6am class.

Sunday Mar 12, 2006 #

Note

Out at Mashamoquet for course tweaking and checking, and for clearing a very old trail for the white course to use. Much lopping and bowsawing, to the detriment of all the achy parts - shoulder, wrists, hand, low back.

Orienteering 1:40:00 [2]

Checking some map corrections in the SE corner, and picking a better control site or two.

Saturday Mar 11, 2006 #

cycling (road) 1:19:36 [3] 20.1 mi (3:58 / mi)

Pleasant Valley up E River Rd to Sandy Brook to Campbell and back, sort of with Rhonda. She lagged a bit behind, and turned back earlier, so I met her again in PV. Not bad on the way up, but neck was really stiff by half way back. First road bike ride of the season. Beautiful day. Long sleeve shirt and tights. the route

Friday Mar 10, 2006 #

cycling (stationary bike) 30:00 [3]
slept:7.0 weight:168lbs

At the hotel, with the NYT. Also followed up with a few dumbbell curls. I used a heavier weight than usual (not that much - 30 lbs), but it was interesting how quickly my R shoulder was the limiting factor.

Wednesday Mar 8, 2006 #

Gym 55:00 [3]

Rhonda's morning class. Much more demanding now that she is back from her new training regimen. She is getting pretty buffed up, too.

cycling (stationary bike) 30:00 [2]
slept:7.0 weight:165lbs

Reading the paper, waiting for a call. Pretty mellow.

Note

Went down to the bear den on the Ratlum Mt map today with a DEP biologist and peeked inside. Mom and three little cubbies. DEP will come out next week to try to collar mom and weigh and tag the cubs. Pretty fine.

Gym 1:20:00 [2]

Rhonda's evening class. Pretty mellow, although I whacked my back carrying tire chains out to the barn before class, which called for some adaptive movements. It should be ok in a day or so, though. Nothing serious.

Tuesday Mar 7, 2006 #

cycling (Mt bike) 40:00 [2] 9.0 mi (4:27 / mi)

Loop around the river road with Rhonda. Kind of cool out, but pleasant.

Running 18:00 [2] 2.2 mi (8:11 / mi)

Fisherman's lot to park entrance and back on E river rd with Rhonda, directly after the bike ride. Seemed like it would be trivial, but our legs felt weird after the bike, especially not being used to it. I guess this may be the start of her triathlon training. Lucky she didn't make me swim in the river! That would have been pretty chilly.

Rowing Machine 21:16 [3] 5.0 km (4:15 / km)

Remarkably difficult. Started out too fast, apparently, although not all that fast objectively. Anyway, I had to slow down.

Monday Mar 6, 2006 #

Gym 1:00:00 [2]

Rhonda's 8 am class. Picked her up at 6:15 after she flew in on the redeye from LAX, but she had plenty of steam in her. Afterwards she asked me if it was too easy a class. Hah!

Running 32:26 [3] 3.75 mi (8:39 / mi)

Around Reservoir 6 on my way back from Hartford this afternoon. A little mushy, a little slippery in spots. I have really lost my zip. I recall a time (OK, it was 20 years ago) when I did two laps in 49 minutes. Those were the days.

Sunday Mar 5, 2006 #

cycling (stationary bike) 30:00 [2]

Just the Hartford Courant today, so not as good a workout as the NYT.

Running (trails) 35:00 [2]

Down to the beaver pond and around the Art Sweeton loop, mostly. With Hazel. I wore studded o-shoes because there are patcfhes of ice under the thin snow. Went across the beaver pond to the NE corner, then up through the laurel and rocks to Art's jeep trail, then around. Awesome sunny day. Saw some sneaker tracks on Lavander Rd, but they turned down to the E when I hit the corner by my property. Definitely running. I wonder who?

Saturday Mar 4, 2006 #

Hike 1:30:00 [1]

With some relatively new neighbors, Donna & Eric. Down to their house, then through their yard to small land trust piece, up to the SE corner of my land, through that to the vicinity of the Beaver Pond, then back down to the landing and home.

Friday Mar 3, 2006 #

Gym 27:00 [3]

Another shiva rea video, this am. More favorable than jogging in icy, mushy streets.

Thursday Mar 2, 2006 #

cycling (stationary bike) 40:00 [2]

reading the paper - NYT, so a pretty good workout

Gym 30:00 [3]

shiva rea workout video - brought a map and video to Providence. good for my stiff joints.

Wednesday Mar 1, 2006 #

Running 31:35 [2] 3.2 mi (9:52 / mi)
slept:9.5 weight:167lbs

Around Providence. Very sluggish. Hamstring was going nuts. It doesn't do well in the cold.
