Gym 15:00 [2]

Jessica's abdominal workout (short version). She does it every day and has for about 4-5 years now. One day short, the next long (about an hour). Watches a lot of movies like that.

Gym 1:00:00 [3]

Mary Ellen's morning class. I found it pretty hard today, as the joints were aching, particularly wrists and R elbow, also R hip and chronic muscle strain in L abdomen. Yikes!

weights 30:00 [2]

Out to the gym for some bench presses, squats, curls with weights and pulldowns, etc. on the machine. Puny weights, but one has to start somewhere. Now, can I keep at it? Twice a week would be nice. Three even better.

Orienteering race 1:03:39 [5] *** 6.1 km (10:26 / km) +165m 9:11 / km
spiked:10/16c shoes: integrators

US Champs day 2, green Y. Pretty good run - only about six minutes mistakes. Good enough to move me up to 2nd in M55 for the 2 days, after a disastrous day 1.

Orienteering race 1:29:56 [5] *** 6.5 km (13:50 / km)
spiked:8/16c shoes: integrators

US Champs at Dutchman Flat, Green Day 1. Beautiful day, nice forest, running well. But . . . I only made one mistake, but I made it about 10 times! Somehow I hadn;'t gotten my head around pacing at 1:10000, and was overshooting everything by 50%. OK when I hit a big feature (if confusing), but not OK in the more vague areas. I finally figured it out when I switched to the 1:5000 section at number 12, and realized that hey, the rest of this had been at 1:10000! Probably a good 25-30 minutes of errors.

Orienteering 42:00 [1] 2.4 km (17:30 / km)

Walking around the model event at Dutchman's Flat. Nice area, well mapped. Not much energy - would not have liked to be running. Lucky for me I got a ride to and from the start, and avoided the 1K or so hike in each direction.

Hike 1:00:00 [1] 2.2 mi (27:16 / mi) +200m 21:16 / mi

At Crater Lake with Kathy - down to the boat dock for the ride around the lake, and then back up again.

trail run 1:05:00 [3] 5.5 mi (11:49 / mi)

On the trails at Annadel SP. Early morning, kind of foggy. Beautiful park, beautiful views. Lots of quarrying activity in the past there, which was kind of interesting. Carried the park map, which was helpful, although an O map would have been much cooler. Got a little confused on some unmapped side trails.

Wednesday Aug 24, 2005 #

Hike 2:00:00 [1] 4.5 mi (26:40 / mi)

With Kathy at Spring Lake and Annadel Parks in Santa Rosa. Including a circuit of the parcourse at Spring Lake. That stuff is way harder than it used to be! Especially vaulting.

Hike 1:16:30 [2] 5.7 mi (13:25 / mi)

E River Rd, Pleasant Valley with Rhonda. Rhonda is a killer walker, and determined to be at all times a half-stride ahead.

Hike 1:28:00 [2] 5.0 mi (17:36 / mi)

Parked a car at Northern trail head of tunxis trail on Ratlum Rd, hiked S on trail to Doyle Rd then up Doyle to the house. Family outing with Zack, Rhonda, Jess and Hazel.

Orienteering 2:40:00 [3] *** 6.0 km (26:40 / km)
spiked:6/6c shoes: integrators

Control pickup at Great Mtn Rogaine. Parked near W2 waterstop and picked up 24, 26, 65, 35, 47 and 78. 65, 35, 47 was a loop I had thought would be a good addition to the loop Bob and I did yesterday. Very easy navigation (good night controls), but a lot of climb. Best to use the switchbacks rather than cut the corners.

Orienteering race 5:52:00 [4] *** 22.0 km (16:00 / km)
spiked:10/14c shoes: integrators

Great Mountain Rogaine, CT, 6 hour division, with Bob Lux. 2nd place overall. Great forest, navigation went very well. A little low on energy as a team. Trip to the east to pick up 180 points took way too long. Got up several times in the night with leg cramps, and have a sore toe, but otherwise ok. The route: 30, 77, 86, 41, 78, 66, 48, 29, 67, 60, 79, 87, 88, 70 and in. Had to drop off 4 planned controls at the end because of time.

cycling 1:34:00 [3] 20.3 mi (4:38 / mi)

Big hills! Up 179 to E Hartland, down 20 to 219 in Granby, 219 to Ratlum and home.

Wednesday Aug 17, 2005 #

Running 44:39 [4] 5.7 mi (7:50 / mi)

Pleasant Valley, E River Rd. Slowish on the way out, but picked it up coming back. 23:12, 21:27.

Gym 45:00 [2]

Rhonda's 6 am class. I've got mid-back spasms on the left, and the class was irritating it.

Monday Aug 15, 2005 #

cycling 1:08:00 [2] 14.0 mi (4:51 / mi)

Rode the mtn bike down to town and back. 24 minutes down and 44 back. Quite a hill.

Sunday Aug 14, 2005 #

Running 45:17 [4] 5.7 mi (7:57 / mi)

Pleasant Valley up east river rd and back. Hot and muggy. Rhonda was a bit behind, in 47:47. All things considered, not bad.

Orienteering 4:00:00 [1]

Wandering around on Wells map, trying to get a feel for it. Map quality is pretty erratic. Way too many features, yet still missing some really major ones. Also killer poison ivy.

cycling 30:00 [1] 7.0 mi (4:17 / mi)

Down Doyle Rd to NH and up Goose Green to Stanclift Cove to swim with Rhonda - bummer, though, as the swim area was closed due to a couple of lightning flashes. A little swirl of wind came through and cooled things off, though.

Friday Aug 12, 2005 #

Gym 45:00 [3]

Pretty hard. I was really feeling it in my low back and in my wrists.

Hike 1:20:00 [2] 4.25 mi (18:49 / mi)

Too beat to run this morning, so Rhonda and I walked down the Devil's Elbow and to Lavander, then back through the woods.

cycling 30:00 [2] 7.0 mi (4:17 / mi)

Down Doyle to NH to Goose Green to Stanclift cove. Pushing a bit to break 30, but broke my computer instead - it just stopped in the last quarter mile. Why??? Can't seem to get it to register now.

Swim 10:00 [1] 0.2 mi (49:59 / mi)

Easy couple of laps at Stanclift Cove with Rhonda. She has been swimming half hour at a clip, but it's a little dicey on my neck, so I'm easing into it.

Thursday Aug 11, 2005 #

Running 52:00 [2] 5.0 mi (10:24 / mi)

Down Bunker Hill Rd and up Barbourtown. Rhonda made me do it! 6 am and already sticky out.

Golf 1:00 [1]

I don't generally keep golf in here, but had an interesting time today. I've been thinking about my backswing for the last week or two (although not doing anything about it). Today I went off to play 9 holes with my friend Tom and had time to hit a bucket of balls first. I think I've been swaying back rather than turning, so turning was the fix I worked on. Started out with some low flubs and some prodigious hooks. Then I proceeded to the Ancient Mariner, who hitteth one of three. Finally played the round, and had my best outing of the season - a 44 with no divots the size of a small raccoon. Am I in recovery? Who knows?

Wednesday Aug 10, 2005 #

Gym 45:00 [3]

Rhonda's 6 am class. First time in a month or more. It was plenty hard! I could sure feel it in my lower back.

Running 48:39 [3] 5.7 mi (8:32 / mi)

Pleasant Valley along E River Rd and back. Wicked hot and humid, even though it was only 8:30 am.

Mountain bike 33:00 [2] 7.3 mi (4:31 / mi)

Down Doyle Rd, to NH and up Goose Green Rd to Stanclift Cove. Pretty spent after spending most of the day at a very lengthy memorial service for some friends and neighbors who were killed in a plane crash last week. Didn't feel like working when I got back, so biked over to the lake and went for a little swim with Rhonda and Jess (who ran there).

Tuesday Aug 9, 2005 #

Mountain bike 42:00 [2] 9.2 mi (4:34 / mi)

Doyle Rd to NH to Goose Green up to Barkhamsted Cemetery, down Beech Rock Road to Stanclift Cove, to meet Rhonda to swim. Went late, after I got back from Shelton and West Htfd.

Running 25:00 [1] 2.5 mi (10:00 / mi)

Around Ann and Foxcroft with Rhonda, fairly early.
