Nice course by Phil at Mt Norwottuck. Particularly fine score-o. Many route choices, far more controls than I could reasonably ascribe to get, and unambiguous control locations. Just a fine job. Got stranded out on Mt Norwottuck with 15 minutes left and had to hotfoot it back, skipping all remaining controls. Got back with a minute to spare. My route

32 fine, if a bit slow getting started
33 ok, except cut in from the road in the streambed below the cliff, thinking that was the trail
42 fine
57 fine
64 pretty straight route, but maybe not the best use of time
62 easy, saw Janet T on the way
81 first blunder: came up the shallow reentrant in the middle of the knoll, thinking I was further N below the index contour, Wandered around for a while, seeing Trisha Underwood just before I found it, and Carl U just after. figure about 4 minutes lost
92 nicely done, just straight down the reentrant.
52 trouble keeping a straight line, but no problem. First place I saw Ali, and also Ken Sr
63 more or less with Ken right of the line but parallel error on wrong side of spur to the N and lost a minute or so
82 fine. Over the spur and up the reentrant, in pretty good contact
74 another blunder - headed right for it, but hill didn't look like much and I got sucked off on the rocky spur to the W before looking back at the hill and the control looking much better from that angle
93 fine, but moving slowly
56 this was going ok, except I was a little surprised to see it because I didn't think I was quite there yet
71 got to the right place but I was a little confused because I didn't see a rock. Then I looked at the clue and saw 0.5 m, which meant I was really looking for a flag
73 A little wobbly because I thought I had already crossed the trail before I came to it, and then I didn't know what trail I had found. Maybe 2 minutes of wandering, but hit it right on eventually, if not with confidence
84 fine, just slow, whereupon there was only about 15 minutes left and not sure I could get back. I had planned on getting at least 72, 54 and 31, but too late! Seemed like fastest way back was back the way I started.

Note

AOWN: I just missed it, but as I was driving up the driveway Rhonda and Zack saw a young bobcat stroll through the garden.

At McLean GR with Zack. Plan was for him to run 10.5 and me to run 8.5 and meet at or near the end, with a variety of loops involved. He had stomach cramps along the way and decided to bail out around 5, and waited for me to show up there. I was happy enough to stop then, so it all worked out.

Then we picked up the turkey on the way home and got there in time to start welcoming company, so it was all for the best.

Note

Interesting comparing FR data from Traverse. In addition to general slowness, it seems I traveled 300 M farther than Phil, 1.1 K farther than Marie, and a remarkable 1.9 K farther than Ali.

Blue Hills Traverse. Very sore hamstring and fairly sore low back. Also, seemed to be very low on agility - lots of falls and stumbles. Early on with a group of about 6 or so including Katia, Dean, Sam L. By 10 it was just Dean, and then he got ahead, and then away on the way to 14. Ran into Meg Parson at 15, but then I made a big error at 16 and got way off to the W, on the wrong side of the marsh. Saw a big buck with a nice rack when I was headed back to 16. Then ran into Meg again at 17, and she was behind me at 18. Last I saw her was after I overshot 19 and looked back and saw her behind me, presumably picking it up cleanly. Then I had trouble finding 20. Fine to 21 and alone. Fine to 22, except I hopped down over the cliff and - nothing! How could it not be there? Wandered down the stream bed, checking all the unmapped rock features, then back up again slowly, and there was Scott Turner at the smaller cliff beyond the one I had first found. Darn. I had passed within 5 meters of it 5 minutes earlier. Then I went pretty straight to 23, and I think Scott went low. We met up again near the control. Then trouble with 24. Looked at the cliff and didn't see a bag, so went by looking for another one, as it was in a kind of vague area. Nothing there, and back to the cliff again. Still didn't see a bag, but by now I was pretty sure this was the right place. Then finally saw a corner of a bag behind a tree in front of the cliff. Missed 25 a little low, then came back and would have missed it a little high, except Scott was there. On to 26 where I bounced around among the boulders with Scott and Jeff Schapiro until one of us found the bag. Followed Scott out of there, and couldn't have caught him, except he went breezing by the good place to jump off and get 27, so I got ahead of him. Physically a very difficult and slow time.

My route: East and West.

McLean Game Refuge. Kind of cold, but not too bad for mid-November. Went with Zack. He ran 8.5 and I ran 6.4, but we managed to arrive at the finish together. Pretty fine.

Plan A and plan B got away from me, so just went out and ran one of the sprint courses. Getting darkish, and wet and slippery so being a bit cautious. I took Sassy along. She had a pretty swell time, and it would have been much more interesting to have the FR tied to her collar. She's not used to it, though, so I stopped after one loop because I wasn't sure she would still like it if I did another. Took one tumble when I slipped sideways on a log.

WCOC meet at Tarrywile. Left the FR home by mistake, which was too bad. Kind of felt weird not to be punching it. Course was interesting. All on the eastern side of the map with a butterfly and lots of controls in relatively small areas. Generally navigating pretty well. Stopped one cliff short on the way to #6 and lost maybe 45 seconds or a minute. Then got one cliff too far N at 13 and was confused, went N first (where I saw Joe on his way to 9 and then back. Maybe 2-3 minutes lost. Then in a fog going to 14, which I had already been to once (it was the same as 9 in the butterfly), but was one line too high and went by it. Had to come back. Another 2 minutes there. Otherwise just slow. Saw Joe again on the dogleg from 15, and he went by on the way to 19.

Red course at Beaver Brook. 6.6K Got there early because I had to leave by around 11 to get to Zack's cross country race in Carlisle. Of course these things always take longer, so I rolled in at 11:15. Still plenty of time, but Rhonda wasn't very pleased with me.

First couple were fine, then lost significant time on 3, 5, 6, 7 and 12. Woods were pretty thick, particularly in the range of 5 through 9, and things just don't look the way I expect them to when I get there. A fair amount of wandering, and a fair amount of anxiety over how long it was taking.

But a nice day, and a fun course. My route.

sprints again. Took a very hard fall tripping on a rock or a root and nearly hitting my head on a rock. But bounced up and managed a PR, which was quite fine. There is a point where just going a bit faster involves a lot more tripping, falling and getting scraped up.

Around LaPaz seeing the sites with Dick Opsahl and Rhonda. Dick is surprisingly spunky. Visited a couple of churches, then stopped for coffee at a coffee shop near the hotel. A bit of a time explaining currency conversion to the young waitress, but tipped her well for her trouble and she seemed gratified. Our route
