Gym 1:00:00 [3]

Rhonda's morning class. Generally ok, and certainly better in some respects for doing it a lot lately. Hamstrings tender from yesterday, and maybe a couple of other places.

On reflection, not going to Anza after all.

Orienteering 2:10:00 [3] 7.0 km (18:34 / km)
shoes: 2009 Yellow NB 840s

Mt Tom all 18 course. Hamstrings acting up quite a bit, and lost for long stretches of time in NE Kingdom. Not my best work. Route: 6-7-8-15-18-17-14-16-13-12-11-10-9-5-4-3-2-1. Trouble finding 8 since I approached from the side and it was almost down by the stream. Wandered back and forth for quite a while, then up to the road and down to the stream where I found it. Got confused near 14 and wandered quite a while until I ran into Pavi who was leaving the area. Lost about 15 minutes wandering around looking for 16, before relocating from a stream bend about 100 m away. Better from there, but real slow and getting a bit lightheaded too. Nice day.

Rowing Machine 10:00 [3] 2.27 km (4:25 / km)

Forearm has been a little better last day or so, and I thought this was worth a try. No immediate pain, but I'll have to see how it develops. Last setback I had with the forearm was not immediate, but the next day after doing some pullups.

Gym 1:00:00 [3]

Rhonda's morning group, but at the relatively relaxed hour of 6:30 as nobody had anyplace special to go today. Thought we might get Peter, but he said he woke up at 6:20 and stayed quiet until we were safely out of the house. So just 5 this morning, but a spirited group. Planks were a little better today.

Thursday Nov 26, 2009 #

cycling 33:00 [3]

On the spinning bike, keeping PG company while he was on the treadmill.

Wednesday Nov 25, 2009 #

Gym 1:00:00 [3]
slept:5.0 weight:161.5lbs

With Rhonda's group, after a late night with the Land Trust. T'giving company also started to show up last night.

Tuesday Nov 24, 2009 #

Running 23:14 [3] 5.0 km (4:39 / km)
shoes: NB MT840

Stratton Brook 5K course. A bit overdressed. Hamstring complaining a fair amount, but otherwise a pretty good effort. Splits at the bridge: 4:23; 9:16; 15:00. A PR, and apparently a PR at each split. Excellent!

Monday Nov 23, 2009 #

Gym 1:00:00 [3]
weight:163.5lbs

Rhonda's morning class, which was challenging after a late night. R hamstring in full inflammation mode this morning.

Sunday Nov 22, 2009 #

Orienteering race 1:19:59 [3] 5.7 km (14:02 / km)

Wooster Mt red course. . Nice day, great course. Slipping and stumbling quite a bit, which moderated my pace after the first three crashes. A few lesser bobbles and one big clunker where I got into the wrong reentrant on the way to 11. Watching what Rich N was doing instead of what I was doing. Still, pretty satisfactory and mostly knew where I was the rest of the time.

Then hotfooted it out of there and down to NYC for Jess's birthday.

Wednesday Nov 18, 2009 #

Gym 1:00:00 [3]

Rhonda's morning class without Rhonda, who was taking her sister to the airport. Cindy was in charge, a bit nervous, and certainly a less imperious leader. It went fine, though. A total of 8 in attendance.

Running 24:13 [3] 5.0 km (4:51 / km)
shoes: NB MT840

Stratton Brook XC course. Late in the day, just before dark. Splits at each bridge crossing: 4:42; 9:42; 15:40

Tuesday Nov 17, 2009 #

cycling (spinning bike) 25:00 [3]
weight:162lbs

with Rhonda and Chris. Thought there might be some crossfit involved, but R is feeling a bit under the weather, and I had to get going to the doctor's. Got another cortisone shot in my elbow.

Sunday Nov 15, 2009 #

Orienteering race 2:58:00 [3] 13.9 km (12:48 / km) +280m 11:38 / km
shoes: 2009 Yellow NB 840s

Blue Hills Traverse. Started badly, with poor route choice/execution and very slow running. By the time I was off the first map, I was wondering if I would be able to finish by dark. Back and hamstring achy.

Got a stick deep in my ear shortly after #1 and found it mightily distracting until I finally worked it out around #13.

Middle section was a bit better, but a slog. Occasionally seeing the gang a few minutes ahead - George, Ken W Sr, Jeff Shapiro, Fred Pilon, Bruce Shenker, but mostly alone. Back and forth a bit with Bruce on 7-10 before leaving him behind on the way to 11.

Got a better rhythm after 12 or so, and finished better over the last several, catching Jeff at 15 or thereabouts and not quite catching up to George.

Tough drive back - back and hamstring acting up a lot.

Note

Went to New England HS cross country championships, held this year in CT. A pretty exciting time as the Canton boys team qualified by virtue of their fine 4th place finish in the state open last week. Mike LeDuc of Canton was 11th (4th CT runner) and Canton ended up 13th overall. Pretty fine. Very slippery. Kids were sliding all over the place, especially after the girls race had chewed up the course in the rain. Our friend Brian was 58th.

Friday Nov 13, 2009 #

cycling (spinning bike) 31:00 [3]

with Rhonda and the girls at 5:45.

Gym 15:00 [3]

circuit of a few exercises - trying not to overdo anything

Note

work was light today, so I put in a store of firewood. Probably spent 3 or 4 hours, mostly splitting and stacking stuff I had cut at various times over the year. Made my back hurt, but I'll rest up tomorrow.

Thursday Nov 12, 2009 #

Running 51:52 [3] 5.0 mi (10:22 / mi)
weight:165.5lbs shoes: NB MT840

McLean game refuge, usual route. A nice bit of pacing, as the target was 52 minutes. R calf a little pinchy, but otherwise feeling ok, anticipating the Traverse on Sunday.

Wednesday Nov 11, 2009 #

Gym 45:00 [3]

Rhonda's morning group - couple of HS kids and some neighbors from Robin Drive - different group from usual. Some things going a bit better. Wrists and elbows taking some of the planks and related things better.

Running 24:12 [3] 5.0 km (4:50 / km)
shoes: NB MT840

Stratton Brook 5k course. Not comparable to the last few times, because I had been turning too soon on the first loop and cutting it short. Interesting - felt hard and I felt out of breath, but my back was ok and even my hamstring wasn't complaining much.

Sunday Nov 8, 2009 #

Orienteering race 2:29:16 [3] *** 10.8 km (13:49 / km) +620m 10:44 / km
spiked:20/22c shoes: 2009 Yellow NB 840s

Red course at Pond Mt. Much longer than advertised, and a little anxiety because I had promised Rhonda I would be home by noon. didn't make it. navigation was mostly very good, but physically very difficult for me. Only two significant errors - one was heading to the wrong control (and spiking it) only to check the code and realize I was at #14 instead of #11. The other was drifting way low on the way to 13 and having to climb another 5 lines to get back up. After that I was walking almost anything mildly uphill. A lovely day, and a really fun course. Just too long for me today.

Saturday Nov 7, 2009 #

Orienteering race 1:20:57 [3] *** 6.5 km (12:27 / km)
spiked:9/11c shoes: Yellow NB T840

Wolf Den red course. Felt pretty sore and sluggish, but a beautiful day and a very nice course. Lost a fair amount of time going to #2 when I lost my shoe in a deceptively deep marsh and had to fish for it for a while.

Friday Nov 6, 2009 #

Note

Went to Wickham Park to watch the state open X country championships. The Canton boys having a very good season, got 4th place - an outstanding result. Mike LeDuc was about 8th coming out of the woods, but had a bad fall when his shoe caught somebody else's foot just as they crossed the pavement. Bounced up and caught some people back, but ended up 15th. Brian Magna was 31st. Pretty exciting, and good exercise running from place to place to see them - six different places in all, then did it again for the girls race.

Running 22:38 [3] 5.0 km (4:32 / km)
shoes: NB MT840

Stratton Brook again. Felt faster, but seem to have gone about the same time.

Thursday Nov 5, 2009 #

Running 22:35 [3] 5.0 km (4:31 / km)
shoes: NB MT840

Stratton Brook, feeling sluggish, but pushing. I think I have missed something on this course, though, 'cause I'm not that fast.

Wednesday Nov 4, 2009 #

Gym 45:00 [3]

Rhonda's morning group, very well attended today.

Monday Nov 2, 2009 #

Running 40:00 [3] 4.0 mi (10:00 / mi)
shoes: NB MT840

With Rhonda at the very fine North Carolina Arboretum, with a few stops to look at the gardens and exhibits. I particularly like the bonsai exhibition, although the whole place is really great.

Sunday Nov 1, 2009 #

Running 45:00 [3] 4.5 mi (10:00 / mi)

With Rhonda along Blue Ridge Parkway in Asheville
