cycling (spinning bike) 45:00 [3]

With Rhonda's gang this morning, but without Rhonda, who is in TX visiting her mom.

Rowing Machine 12:00 [3] 2.5 km (4:48 / km)

with the morning group. after Jan's session, which really burned up the place. She was putting in some serious effort. I am scared to row that hard yet. Got to work up to it.

Running 49:07 [3] 5.7 mi (8:37 / mi)

Pleasant Valley out and back with Kathleen. Fairly mellow pace, until the last mile when she kept cranking it up. 9:45; 16:05; 15:25; 7:52. I was working pretty hard at the end, and my stride kept getting longer, but she seemed like it was pretty easy for her.

Running 1:10:00 [3] 6.0 mi (11:40 / mi)
weight:166.5lbs

In Peoples State Forest, with Kathleen. Mixture of roads and trails. The approximate route, although it doesn't do justice to the twists and turns off-road. Downhills were pretty scary with rocks covered with wet leaves. Uphills were really hard, maybe because of the rowing yesterday. Rhonda was not available, because she was overseeing the garden club wreathmaking event in our barn.

cycling (spinning bike) 40:00 [3]
weight:164.5lbs

With Rhonda and Kathleen. Missed the morning class today - not quite together in time.

Rowing Machine 20:55 [3] 5.0 km (4:11 / km)

Inspired by coach. Definitely not used to this. Breathing kind of hard, and most difficult in the hands and forearms. It's always like this when I first start out in the fall. It will get better.

Event: Mt Tom

Orienteering race 1:30:25 [3] 6.2 km (14:35 / km)
weight:165lbs

Mt Tom Red Course. Fine course by Phil, very physical first part. Only one real error - but about 7 minutes. Parallel error and then slow relocating.

Note

An hour and a half of rather pleasant trail clearing with the chainsaw. I have a section between my new road through the clearcut and the path Zack and Brian and I cut through the laurel that has a lot of logs lying in it. Lifted them with my timberjack and cut them to firewood length, and will cart them out of there in the next few days. My first thought was to call it a peavey, but figured I'd better look it up. While similar, it is more of a cant hook with an attached stand to lever a log up.

Running 1:16:21 [3] 6.0 mi (12:44 / mi)
weight:166lbs

At Penwood with Rhonda and Kathleen. Started out on trail to the west, but apparently missed a turn and ended up on powerline west of ridge, so climbed up to the park road, then N on trail at base of ridgeline to extension of Terry's Plain, then back up the trail on top of the ridge to head south, finishing on the road S from Lake Louise. Hadn't run here in several years, and it was remarkable how much more difficult is was than I remembered. Left me pretty tired and had to take a short nap after lunch.

Running 46:27 [3] 5.7 mi (8:09 / mi)
weight:168lbs

Pleasant Valley out and back on E River Rd, with Rhonda and Kathleen, and special guest PG. Cold and blustery, and feeling some effects of over-calorification. Tried to hang onto the group, but they scrubbed me off at the first hill at about 1.5 miles. Still kept gritting my teeth, and this is my best time so far this year. Splits: 9:16; 14:52; 14:01; 8:18. About :53 behind the group.

Pretty good night's sleep. We banished Rebekah and family to the basement after her performance the night before, which woke us up permanently about 1:30 am.

Thursday Nov 22, 2007 #

Note

About an hour's pleasant laurel wrangling, working on extending some open area from the big rock down to an old skid trail. Accompanied by Charles Jr., who has some laurel wrangling history here about 12 years ago.

Gym 1:00:00 [3]
weight:164lbs

Rhonda's morning class.

Running 52:29 [3] 5.7 mi (9:12 / mi)

Pleasant Valley, with R & K. Stiff in the legs today and couldn't get going. Girls way off in front. They had a 3 1/2 minute lead at the turnaround. Splits: 9:55, 16:57; 16:26; 9:11. On the other hand, since it was just the legs that wouldn't move, less of a sense of effort than the other day when I was working hard to go faster.

Tuesday Nov 20, 2007 #

Running (treadmill) 15:00 [4] 1.9 mi (7:54 / mi)
slept:6.5 weight:165lbs

Rhonda's morning cardio group, alternating 9:30 and 6:35 pace.

cycling (stationary) 15:00 [2]

With the morning group.

Rowing Machine 10:00 [3] 2.2 km (4:33 / km)

With the morning circuit group. Not in the habit of rowing and it will take a while.

Running 47:03 [3] 5.7 mi (8:15 / mi)
slept:8.5 weight:164lbs

Couldn't get up this morning in time for class, but did catch on with K and R for the run from Pleasant Valley this morning. Hung with them on the way out, and got a bit ahead on the way back. They were just chatting and letting me go. They could have reeled me in at any time, more or less, although I am relatively better downhill and on the way back, while they tend to run more evenly. Feeling kind of ouchy, but this was my best time on this route this season. 9:38, 15:26, 14:08, 7:51. Looked back to April '05, when I ran this route in 42:15, so a fair amount of work left to match that record.

Orienteering race 1:30:48 [4] *** 6.33 km (14:21 / km) +170m 12:39 / km
17c weight:165lbs

WCOC meet at Wooster Mt. Legs felt really weak and tired. Lots of difficulty with footing, and being very cautious on rocky sections (i.e., everywhere). A really fine map, but I was having trouble finding the route, with the light red route printing hard to pick up on reddish-brown contours. For example, kept following the line from 8-9 and having trouble finding the control circle for 9 every time I looked at the map. lnstead, kept heading from 8-7. Definitely felt more in control on easier open terrain, like 11-15.

Note

This was certainly indicative of my current ability level in this terrain. Of seven split posters (three of whom are certainly out of my league, but three others I think of as a peer group), my best leg out of 18 was a 4th, and I had one 5th, 8 6s and 8 7s. Pretty far off the pace, and most of the time I was feeling that way out there, too, although I felt pretty good on 1, 2, 8 and 12-15.

Gym 1:00:00 [3]

Rhonda's morning class, before trip to RI today.

Tuesday Nov 13, 2007 #

Running 48:22 [3] 5.7 mi (8:29 / mi)
weight:166lbs

Out and back from Pleasant Valley on E River Rd. Behind the girls. Splits- 9:31, 15:50, 14:49, 8:12.

Orienteering race 1:34:08 [3] 6.4 km (14:42 / km)

Very fine and difficult course set by the wealthy N, exposing some of my deficiencies of technique and focus and then some. First 6 legs in thick, technical areas of Sessions Woods in the SE, then the rest in the fast, open northern part. Real problem executing in the circle on #1, then very poor route execution on #4 and #5, with it all adding up to (by my count) 23 minutes of errors.

However, a very enjoyable experience, and an example of a hard but fair course. None of the problems I saw in my last 3 A-meets, which had:
1. Controls on features not visible in the terrain (US Champs Day 1).
2. Controls on features not visible on the map (Boulder Dash)
3. Wrong clue descriptions (rock features much smaller than advertised - think 1 meter boulders actually the size of a microwave oven).

Instead, today's course had technical terrain, plenty of hills, difficult green patches you could fight or navigate around, and finally fast open sections. All done using features and routes that were new in an area we have used many times before.

Note

Dug out some stumps out of the side field with the backhoe, which was generally satisfactory (if cold), until I hopped down to horse one of them into the bucket so I could dump it in the woods. The loader bucket is just a bit too small to pick up the stuff I seem to want to pick up. I suppose that might be true no matter how big a tractor I had. Anyway, strained my back, and will probably be pretty gingerly for a few days.

Running 53:49 [3] 5.7 mi (9:27 / mi)

Same run from Pleasant Valley as Wednesday, but cold and just felt tired and sluggish. splits: 9:46, 18:00, 16:33, 9:30. AOWN - handsome bald eagle perched in a tree on W side of river 400M north of the bridge.

Wednesday Nov 7, 2007 #

Gym 1:00:00 [3]
slept:6.0 weight:165.5lbs

Rhonda's morning class. A little hard to get up - too much pizza and out too late at Land Trust fundraiser.

Running 48:12 [3] 5.7 mi (8:27 / mi)

Out and back on E River Rd in Pleasant Valley, eating the dust of Rhonda and Kathleen. Splits at gate to Mathies Grove, at turnaround and at Mathies Grove again. 9:04, 16:01, 14:51; 8:16. Back is a little easier - more downhill and definitely downwind today.

Tuesday Nov 6, 2007 #

Running 24:00 [3] 2.4 mi (10:00 / mi)

Ann Loop with Kathleen and Rhonda. Short but very hilly, and those girls really abused me.

Gym 15:00 [3]

First section of Rhonda's morning cardio class

cycling 15:00 [3]

On the spinning bike in the cardio class. Turned up the tension and rode standing for a while. Seems like that would help with leg strength. I was a strong runner when I rode a lot of hills.

Rowing Machine 1:25 [3] 2.75 km (31 / km)

during cardio class

Running 10:00 [3]

treadmill in cardio class, including about 5 minutes at a 7 minute pace. Not used to it.

Monday Nov 5, 2007 #

Gym 1:00:00 [3]
weight:166lbs

Rhonda's morning class, with Kathleen, Jan, Sue and Linda

Running 27:00 [3] 2.75 mi (9:49 / mi)

Art Sweeton loop, with Hazel. Getting cool and dark around 4:30, but pleasant, and felt surprisingly spunky.

Orienteering race 1:02:58 [4] 5.8 km (10:51 / km) +263m 8:51 / km

Day 2. Much nicer run and nicer forest. No significant errors: loss of focus and failure to run my planned and easier route on #5 (about a minute), a little hesitation on #6 cost about 30-45 seconds, and a little loose on the shorter legs at the end, but otherwise a pretty clean run. 2nd M-60 American, although a couple of Canadians and those clever girls Kissy and Peggy got by me. No shame in taking a silver behind PG, of course.

Saturday Nov 3, 2007 #

Orienteering race 1:05:48 [4] 5.2 km (12:39 / km) +200m 10:37 / km

US Champs Day 1 Green Y. Mostly an ok run, but lost lots of time on the two controls on thickets, as the thickets didn't seem to show up in the terrain. Eventually found the bags, but couldn't really see any thickets attached to them. Got a little stupid at the end, too, trying to bash through some nasty fight instead of taking simple trail routes. Still 6th out of 70 Green Y runners, and in third in M-60, so not so bad.

Event: US Champs

Orienteering race 24:09 [4] 2.5 km (9:40 / km)

Green Sprint at US Champs. Not very settled down, and lots of booms and bad map reading. Just got a bit panicky under the pressure of a sprint. Parallel error on #2, dumb route choice on trivial leg 5, bad route to 7 because of misreading the hill, poor map reading at #9. Just a mess. Nice day, though, and certainly a fine course.
