Note
(sick)

Scratchy throat and a bit light headed today, so eschewed anything strenuous. Did go out for a quick 9 holes, and played with an old gent (older even than I am) and his son and son-in-law. Most pleasant. The usual mix of euphoria and dismay, however. 5 iron was my best club of the day - a fairly unusual contender.

Running 1:22:53 [3] 7.0 mi (11:50 / mi)

Tunxis trail loop, with J-J. He had Valerie's Garmin and we were going to measure the run, but the batteries gave out, so we'll have to charge up and try again. Splits: 27:57, 36:51; 18:04. Very cool out, and lots of puddles from this morning's hard rain.

Running 28:34 [3] 2.75 mi (10:23 / mi)
weight:167.5lbs

Art Sweeton loop with Hazel

Running (Trail run) 1:22:06 [3] 7.0 mi (11:44 / mi)
weight:168lbs

Tunxis trail loop. Splits 27:08, 37:14, 17:43. Took a spectacularly hard fall on my own trail, cutting and bruising my hand. Once it settled down to just throbbing, felt great! I think this was faster than the last few times I tried this loop, which is encouraging. I'll have to check.

Ah, yes. 1:17 faster than a week or two ago, all made up on the last split up Doyle Rd. First two splits about exactly the same.

Orienteering race 1:05:29 [4] 5.13 km (12:46 / km) +100m 11:38 / km

Classic race at CNYO meet. Warmed up for a while before to get the stiffness out. Rain came just as I started and got pretty dark for a while. Pretty clean on the first three then a major boom on #4, followed by leaving it in the wrong directionto go to 5, adding almos 200M. Settled down after that. First saw George at #9, although he had been seeing me for a while. Ok until the big swamp crossing, which was very yucky. Overall, a great run, though.

Orienteering race (Sprint) 15:34 [5] 1.83 km (8:30 / km) +50m 7:29 / km

Sprint at CNYO meet. Nice running weather after the rain had passed. Mistakes at the first two, then misread at #9 and started for #12 before looking again and realizing I had to head back. Otherwise a good effort, and I felt great!

Orienteering race 38:30 [4] *** 3.52 km (10:56 / km) +115m 9:24 / km
spiked:10/13c

Middle distance Green course at CNYO meet. Moving well. Sprint had me nicely warmed up. Only mistake was at 10, where I was in the right place but didn't see the bag, so ran around for a minute or so before coming back and finding it. Felt great, though

Running 37:00 [3] 4.0 mi (9:15 / mi)

From hotel around Eisenhower Park. three straight days of sitting all day have not been good for me. Nice day.

Rowing Machine 21:54 [3] 5.0 km (4:23 / km)

After getting back from LI tonight. Thought about trying out my new headlamp for a night run, but it really didn't seem like a very good idea.

Note

Some tough work days - phone calls back to back to back yesterday, ending at 8 pm and up at 4:15 today to drive down to Long Island for meetings. No training in sight for a bit, I fear.

Sunday Sep 17, 2006 #

Orienteering race 18:40 [5] *** 2.4 km (7:47 / km) +40m 7:11 / km
spiked:13/14c

Sprint 1 - basically a track meet, although I had a big boom at #9. I was looking at the wrong circle and lost contact and just came to a stop for about a minute or so. Otherwise going as fast as I can, but no match for the fast guys.

Orienteering race 23:51 [5] *** 2.32 km (10:17 / km) +55m 9:11 / km
spiked:12/14c

Sprint # 2 - In group with Karl A., Dean and Matthew. Lost Karl and Dean after #2, and saw others from time to time as they went by. Big error on #5 - close to 2 minutes. Otherwise, just slower than the other guys.

Orienteering race 22:29 [5] *** 2.55 km (8:49 / km) +80m 7:37 / km
spiked:11/15c

Sprint 3- lots of small errors, but much more complex than the other ones, particularly because the campground was so confusing. In group with Karl, Dean and Phil. Lots of back and forth, ended up second, just behind Karl and just in front of Dean.

Saturday Sep 16, 2006 #

Orienteering race 2:22:26 [3] *** 8.6 km (16:34 / km)
spiked:15/21c

Farsta at Hickory Run. Bad footing- kept tripping and stumbling and basically couldn't run at all. Two really remarkably bad errors, one involving going to entriely the wrong control. Felt pretty beat up.

Orienteering race (Night-O) 1:24:35 [3] *** 3.96 km (21:22 / km) +160m 17:46 / km
spiked:5/8c

Night O at Hickory Run. Mostly pretty good, but I definitely need new batteries. Got lost in the campground area, where the trails don't show up well on the map, especially at night. Longer legs up to the west were particularly nice, and footing was mostly better than the farsta.

Note
weight:165lbs (rest day)

Tired after yesterday, particularly in my foot! Need to pump my g back up anyway.

Thursday Sep 14, 2006 #

Running 1:26:17 [3] 7.0 mi (12:20 / mi)
weight:165.5lbs

Tunxis trail loop. A bit slower than the other day, but it was slippery and I was being more careful. Got pretty tired coming up Doyle Rd at the end. Also lost a bit of time giving directions to a lost truckdriver. Knee a bit less sore than Tuesday. Splits: 28:44, 37:47, 19:45

Wednesday Sep 13, 2006 #

cycling 57:00 [2] 13.5 mi (4:13 / mi)
weight:168.5lbs

Pleasant Valley out to Rte 8, then back by a slightly different route; with Rhonda. Plan was for a longer ride, but it was starting to rain, so we headed back.

Tuesday Sep 12, 2006 #

Running (trail run) 1:23:23 [3] 7.0 mi (11:55 / mi)
weight:166.5lbs

Tunxis trail loop from home. Steep and rocky - Peter knows this run. Knee and foot pretty sore. Otherwise ok. Beautiful running weather. Splits 27:07, 37:14, 19:02

Note

golf outing with Tom, Chris and another friend at Tower Ridge. Rough was particularly thick, and my score was abysmal. Driving pretty well, though.

Sunday Sep 10, 2006 #

Orienteering race 1:33:36 [4] 6.3 km (14:51 / km)

Red Day 2 at Pawtuckaway. Pretty good effort, bobbled several, incl 5,6,7,10, but none more than a minute or two. Still way off the speedy pace of George and Phil.

Kayak 45:00 [3]

Paddling around with Rhonda at Pawtuckaway. Visited the controls I missed yesterday.

Saturday Sep 9, 2006 #

Orienteering race 1:38:42 [4] 6.0 km (16:27 / km)

Red Day 1 at Pawtuckaway. A pretty reasonable run. No disasters, but several relatively minor errors and moving very slowly.

Orienteering race (Canoe O) 1:00:56 [4]

Got 11 controls at Pawtuckaway Canoe O. Felt tired, blistered my right thumb. Otherwise ok. One dumb mistake going on the wrong side of an island. Next time, I'm just getting out of the boat for controls that are too tight to get in with the kayak. Spent a fair amount of time wiggling around to try to get into tight spots. Nice day on the water, though.

Orienteering race (Night-O) 1:19:07 [4]

First 9 controls of the Wicked Hard Night-O at Pawtuckaway. This constituted the red course. Mass start was away from me by #2, and only saw a few people after that. Ran with John Magnus off and on up through #7, and saw a guy named Andrew at #7 and then again at #9. Passed Pia and her running companion between 9 and the trail. Took forever on the trail back. Pretty good fun.

cycling 30:00 [3]
weight:164.5lbs

Noodling around Middlebury on the mt. bike while waiting for Jessica to get her car registered, etc.

Orienteering 1:01:56 [3]
weight:168.5lbs

Ran the Green X course from the spring A-meet at Wolf Den on my way back from Providence - or at least most of it. Left off the little lollipop at the end, since I was running short of time before my golf engagement. Kinda hot, and hard moving through ferns and other thick stuff. Felt slow, but no trouble with navigation. Compared it to competitor splits from the actual race, and I was pretty slow. I think I was faster when I ran it back in late April.

Note

o-practice with white ball at Blue Fox with Tom. Started out pretty fine with a birdie, and otherwise not so bad, but afllicted by some annoying pulls on my drives.

Gym 1:10:00 [3]
weight:171lbs

Rhonda's morning class. Haven't done this in a while and found it difficult. Wrist and elbow injuries keep me out of a lot of positions. Saw a whippoorwill cavorting around at the top of the driveway on my way to class at 6am.

Running 44:30 [3]
weight:171lbs

From Zack's school to Gillette Castle and around on some of the trails there. At a break in the action among the parent conferences as school starts.

Monday Sep 4, 2006 #

Running (trail run) 1:24:45 [3] 7.0 mi (12:06 / mi)

Tunxis trail loop from home. Split to jct of Ratlum Rd and trail on N end: 28:15. Split on trail S to Ratlum Rd New Htfd end: 37:46. Up Doyle Rd and home: 18:44. A longstanding observation which held up just fine is that the first split is exactly 1/3 of the time for the whole loop. Haven't done this loop probably in a year, but have been thinking about it for some time. My PR is just about exactly 10 years old - 69:10 in 1996. I think I did something in the 70s sometime within the last four or five years (maybe a 77), but today's goal was 84 - 85, and it worked out fine.

Hike 45:00 [2] 2.25 mi (20:00 / mi)

Ann loop, pushing Rebekah in her stroller and trying to keep up with Rhonda.

Sunday Sep 3, 2006 #

weights 25:00 [2]
weight:167.5lbs

Weight workout in the barn with Charles Jr. I don't do this often enough to do anything hard, but it feels good to stretch the muscles. Mostly curls, pull downs and bench presses.

Note

O practice with Tom at Tower Ridge. Called to cancel our tee time about two minutes before the rain stopped, so we reconsidered and went anyway. Back to a befuddling inability to advance my short irons, digging beaver size patches of real estate. Fun course, though. A few success stories, though, and pulled off some creative shots out of thick rough, from under trees, etc. How did I get there in the first place?

Saturday Sep 2, 2006 #

Orienteering race (score-o) 1:29:40 [4] *** 8.0 km (11:13 / km)
spiked:18/20c weight:168.5lbs

Very pleasant score-o at Huntington St. Park. Had decided not to go because of the forecast of big rain, but it looked pretty dry out, so I set out at the last minute. A bit anxious getting there, as I arrived at 10:55 for the 11:00 mass start, changed, copied map and was ready to go. Course was quite interesting - a 10 control yellow course, but at 5 of the controls there was a map with two more difficult controls to do on memory - or partly on memory, since I had my own map, just didn't have the circles on it. Anxious again, as I got all the controls, but was running low on time - 13 minutes left for the last 4 legs. Picked up the pace and finished panting pretty hard with 20 seconds to go. 4th place overall.

Hike 1:30:00 [2]
weight:169lbs

Spirited jaunt with Rhonda and Hazel, down Doyle Road, up the ski area to the top of Gunbarrel, then back through Lans's property to Breezy Hill Rd, to Mulcundry Rd and back home again.
