cycling 1:21:55 [2] 21.0 mi (3:54 / mi)

Pleasant Valley, up Sandy Brook to Beech Hill and then back, with Rhonda. Relaxed pace, as Rhonda wasn't feeling like pushing it, particularly on the downhills.

Orienteering (putting out controls) 1:30:00 [1]

Setting out controls for the sprints, and dismantling the gate the sub-morons crashed.

Orienteering (course setting) 1:30:00 [1]

Course setting at Ratlum late in the day. Tried to find some good spots in the thickest green, but had to admit defeat, so will leave those spots alone. This is a fine year for the laurel farmers and mosquito ranchers for sure. New sections of the map are a pretty fine addition. On the way back in I was going along the trail and fairly oblivious when I heard a noise and saw a cub in a tree ahead of me and to my right, then his brother just below, and finally their mom at the base in the thicker stuff. She snorted at me rather indignantly, so I backed up a bit, and then went around another way. As I got out of sight, the cubs were up to about 20 feet, and all eyes were on me. Sure would have been nice to have my camera! These are certainly the boys who were born here this winter, now appearing to be about 30 pounds +/-.

Orienteering 1:30:00 [1]

Course setting at Ratlum. Plenty thick out there this year. Down at the gate I see the sub-morons have been back with tools and have now broken off the gateposts. That answers the question of "am I going to replace the gate"? I think the next step will be to escalate to steel gate posts set in sonotubes.

cycling 1:00:00 [3] 15.87 mi (3:47 / mi)
weight:170lbs

From home, to Riverton and back to Stanclift cove where I hitched a ride back with Rhonda, avoiding the long uphill climb back to Ratlum

Sunday Jun 25, 2006 #

cycling 1:06:55 [3] 17.35 mi (3:51 / mi)
weight:169lbs

Two loops Pleasant Valley to Riverton and around, with Rhonda. Extremely muggy, and threatening to rain, but plenty of cyclists out today.

Running 53:00 [3] 5.8 mi (9:08 / mi)

With my friend Randy along the lakefront in Chicago.

Saturday Jun 24, 2006 #

Running 48:21 [3] 4.4 mi (10:59 / mi)
weight:169lbs

Bunker Hill Hanson loop, with Rhonda out in front. Felt sluggish and too much G, and sore right foot. Otherwise ok.

Rowing Machine 22:12 [3] 5.0 km (4:26 / km)

Pretty humid today. I do better in the cool. The heat doesn't bother me as much doing other kinds of exercise.

Friday Jun 23, 2006 #

Rowing Machine 21:35 [3] 5.0 km (4:19 / km)
weight:168lbs

Felt pretty good, except for my foot. I think the cycling is having a salutary effect on my knee.

Thursday Jun 22, 2006 #

cycling 52:58 [4] 11.88 mi (4:28 / mi)

Down Wright Rd to Case St to 219 and home. Got nailed on the left forearm by the first FDF of the season when I was at my most vulnerable, out of the saddle climbing Devil's elbow. Imagine having my elbow bedeviled in such a spot. Anyway, three minutes faster than last time I did this route, which was pleasing, although I was breathing like a draft horse.

Wednesday Jun 21, 2006 #

cycling 2:11:37 [3] 33.18 mi (3:58 / mi)

Pleasant Valley to Sandy Brook Road to 183 to S Sandisfield and back. Beautiful cool weather. Legs had a little more snap than when I did this ride on Saturday - 10 minutes faster. Especially better on the way down.

Tuesday Jun 20, 2006 #

cycling 1:05:33 [3] 15.63 mi (4:12 / mi)

Little loop in W. Simsbury.

Note

A little golf with Tom and Stew. Particularly nasty and persistent slice is back. Hit something in or near the trees on every hole but the par 3s, and some holes more than one. Yikes!

Monday Jun 19, 2006 #

cycling 56:00 [3] 12.0 mi (4:40 / mi)

Wright Road to Case St to 219 back up devil's elbow. Hot and difficult. Panting like Hazel.

Orienteering race 20:52 [4] 2.5 km (8:21 / km)
slept:4.5 weight:166.5lbs

First sprint at Bethel Schools. Lost about 30 seconds at the start getting oriented, and about 30 seconds of dumb route choice on #5. Otherwise not bad, just slow. Very hot.

Orienteering race 30:09 [4] 3.0 km (10:03 / km)

2nd Sprint. Heat and exertion apparently got to me, as several significant errors, on #2, #3 and #7. Also quite slow. Kind of fun that I got passed twice by a couple of guys running together who were going quite fast. They passed me between 4 and 5, and then at #7, and went stroking by #8, barely slowing down. Finished about a minute or so behind me.

Saturday Jun 17, 2006 #

cycling 2:21:32 [3] 33.13 mi (4:16 / mi)

Out and back from Pleasant Valley to Sandisfield. A very pleasant morning, but started raining as soon as I got on the road and rained the whole time. 1:23 up the hill and :58 back. Idea was to keep it mellow, but had a fair amount of neck and upper back pain early, and a rousing headache in the last 10 miles. Longest ride of the season, and led to a nap in front of the US Open later.

Friday Jun 16, 2006 #

cycling 39:00 [1] 8.8 mi (4:26 / mi)

Pleasant Valley loop with Zack. He was rather enthusiastic for the first few miles, but got bored and we slowed down and cut it short. Too bad. Great day for a ride.

Orienteering 1:01:00 [2]

Green course from the snow meet at Sessions last December. Would have been easier with streamers! Visibility not great, footing tricky because of thigh high ferns over most of the course. Missed the first couple, and very slow otherwise. Cut off after #8 and went directly to #12 and in. Logged area in the center that has been progressing from rough open to green is pretty darn green now. Most prominent species is chestnut saplings. Ended up going around it, mostly, whereas going through was a reasonable route last winter.

Wednesday Jun 14, 2006 #

cycling 50:56 [3] 13.26 mi (3:50 / mi)
weight:167.5lbs

Excursion down in Pleasant Valley with Rhonda. Pretty flat, felt good.

Tuesday Jun 13, 2006 #

cycling 53:31 [3] 13.45 mi (3:59 / mi)

Very nice activity for recovery from rogaining! Felt really quite good, riding on the flats (mostly) down in Pleasant Valley and Riverton.

Monday Jun 12, 2006 #

Gym 1:00:00 [1]

Rhonda's evening class. Exposed the tight and sore spots from the rogaine.

Sunday Jun 11, 2006 #

Orienteering race (rogaine) 9:13:18 [2] 24.0 km (23:03 / km)

Balance of the rogaine. We had resolved to spend the night out, and at midnight were pretty far from the HH, so just trudged on. However, a bit of real food would have helped, as none of the candy, gorp, sports drink, etc tasted any good any more. Then we had an hour wasted searching for a veg boundary in the dark in a place where the map was not very good. That started the rapid decline. We cut the rest of the course short, and spent more time resting. Only 490 points in the last 9 hours, for a total of 1,660. Inventory of physical reactions: sore feet, but not unreasonably so; no blisters; sore hamstrings but no unreasonable cramping; sore ankles, sore R knee. Stiffness in lower back and neck, primarily related to pack carrying. Nothing likely to be long lasting. The night time route involved a lot of pack drops, both to conserve energy and to pick safe routes. The trade-off was extra distance. The route: 308,309,607,311(misplaced and never found it, but received credit for being at the right place), 705, 508, 312, 805, 509, 706, 409, 608, 410, 507, 806, 413, 609, 704, 412, (dark) 803, 504, 605, 307, 703, 406, 804 (only major error), 506, (dawn) 604, 606, 602, 402, HH.

Orienteering 13:00:00 [2] 45.0 km (17:20 / km)

First 13 hours of Allegany SP Rogaine, with J-J. Generally pretty satisfactory, and 1,170 pts to that point. Had cleaned up the western side and started on the southern. One particularly discouraging trudge down a stream bed in the dark, including much tripping over deadfall and losing a shoe in the muck, but seeing just the tip of it and being able to fish it out. Very compatible in terms of fitness and energy (and otherwise as well). Knee hurt almost immediately, and throughout. About 5 hours in started having trouble with hamstring cramps, but they went away after about an hour, and weren't a problem again.

Friday Jun 9, 2006 #

Note
(rest day)

As the day before the rogaine, this qualifies as a "rest day", as opposed to other days, like yesterday, when I just don't get around to any exercise!

Wednesday Jun 7, 2006 #

Rowing Machine 30:00 [3] 6.87 km (4:22 / km)

Monday Jun 5, 2006 #

cycling 1:50:41 [3] 28.2 mi (3:55 / mi)

Pleasant Valley to Sandy Brook to 183 to Sandisfield line and back. Rather pleasant, and not too much neck tightness. This is about the current threshold for the neck, though. No RAAM for me. Quad felt ok where I bruised it yesterday, better than trying to walk on it.

Sunday Jun 4, 2006 #

Note

Golf at Tunxis with Tom N and the boys. First 18 of the year, and not too bad on balance. Some good drives, some good short irons. One birdie. Golf involves the occasional bad luck. On the 12th I hit a very nice looking wedge pin high and about 15' right, coming down on the fringe, which sloped toward the hole. Unfortunately, I hit a sprinkler head, which resulted in a hard bounce right down a hill and into a pond. After some more mischief, carded a 7, when a birdie had looked so within reach.
