Took the bus to Lucca this morning. Nice ride, about an hour and 10 minutes, pretty easy once you figure out where the buses leave from. Lucca is an old walled city, and the top of the wall has a path all the way around. After a bit of that, we went down into the city and headed to the Giunigi Tower, a nice enough tower with a good view of the city, but I was a bit disappointed that the art display that had been here a few years ago was no longer here. It was a series of panels showing scenes from the wars between the Lucchesi and the Pisani back in the 1300s or thereabouts. Pretty fascinating and I was hoping to see it again, but according to the attendant it has been moved to a museum, and he wasn't sure when.

Then over to the Piazza dell'Anfiteatro for an open air lunch in the sun, the best mushroom risotto I have had, and some very fine butter and sage ravioli, with a half liter of white wine to split.

I am also getting a fair amount of coffee, because it seems that one or the other of us, more usually the other, is needing a bathroom, and it seems reasonable to buy a coffee to ease the transaction, although perhaps not strictly necessary.

Caught the bus back at 2:55. Very efficient. Stopped in a few churches on the way back from the station.

Dinner at the very nice family trattoria two doors from the apartment. When we go we share everything, so not too much food. First, a spinach salad, baby spinach with thinly sliced pecorino cheese and black truffle carpaccio. Then our first plate was spaghetti in a very light sauce with shrimp, mussels and tiny clams with cherry tomatoes, our second plate was roast sea bass (spigola) with thinly sliced potatoes and tomatoes. Excellent! Rhonda declared this her favorite meal, but in fairness she has done that almost every time.
