Rogaining race (Wandering West) 12:00:00 ** 60.5 km (11:54 / km)
spiked:31/38c slept:10.0 shoes: Salomon XT Wings red (2)

Smashed the first three hours of this event - we were already an hour up on our intended course after this time. Made a few small mistakes and one bigger one in the next four hours but did not drop any time. After that it all went horribly wrong and by midnight we were about 4-5km down on our course. I just could not walk on a bearing and Nicki's compass (less than a week old) was sticking and so that was not much help either. With some of the features (or lack of) involved it was not always possible to navigate by them so it was a pointless task. After our second 40min error I gave up on any hope of winning and we never ran again after about 10pm. Disappointing. Just before midnight my left shin decided to just about kill me and I only had two Nurofen with me so I ate one and my leg got better. It may have also helped to pick up my mood a bit later. I'll remember to take more in the future.

Distance is straight line plus some tracks we'd added in as part of our route but does not count wandering around in circles looking for controls.

Road bike (Commute) 31:30 [2] 13.71 km (26.1 kph)
slept:8.0 shoes: Giant OCR 0

Heavy mist this morning made my helmet drip.

Road bike (commute) 35:22 [3] 16.83 km (28.6 kph)
shoes: Giant OCR 0

Ride out to Greenwood to help someone with a mountain of tax returns. Tailwind all the way out there so a bit surprised with the slow time. Didn't bother going home afterwards.

Road bike (commute) 34:30 [2] 13.7 km (23.8 kph)
slept:8.0 shoes: Giant OCR 0

The bike computer temporarily stopped working in the flood that occurred on the way to work.

Mapping (OCAD) 1 [0] **

Hours of OCAD/GPS fun was enough to give me a headache.

Road bike (Commute) 35:00 [2] 13.65 km (23.4 kph)
shoes: Giant OCR 0

Someone knows I have a rogaine this weekend. I almost hit a cyclist and a pedestrian in quick succession when they pulled out of side paths. The cyclist fortunately stopped; the pedestrian was on a mobile phone so was oblivious to her surroundings, forcing me to take evasive action.

Orienteering (MTB) (Mapping) 7:39:42 [2] ** 77.0 km (10.1 kph) +1227m
slept:7.0 (injured) shoes: Giant Trance 2

More mapping. Riding to miscellaneous locations. I did at one stage start on the abundance of single tracks in the area but as soon as I did I got confused and tried to do a 150 degree turn around a tree and ended up crashing my bike. Great lead up to the rogaine, although I guess it's standard practice now to hurt myself just before one.

It was at this point (about 3 hours in) when I lost a heap of skin from my leg and hand that I realised I wasn't wearing gloves so went back and got them. Some guys in the car park commented on the 'old fashioned GPS' I was carrying so I went off and cried.

After losing it in the single track I went off and mapped the south west and north east instead. Then it got dark and I'd left the lights in the car so I rode back along Nettleton Road in the dark and not long later it rained so luckily I did forget lights or else I would have got wet.

One more trip I think to sort out the single track, although next time I think I'll just ride it all with scant regard for the map and sort it out on OCAD.

Orienteering (bush) race (Heather's Hill - H1) 1:28:42 [3] *** 14.77 km (6:00 / km) +275m 5:30 / km
spiked:15/20c slept:7.0 shoes: Salomon XT Wings red (2)

SL distance 12.9km.

I bought a thumb compass before the start just so I could look like a real orienteer. It must have worked because I made fewer mistakes and the ones I made were less costly. I saw Simmo on the course but he didn't stop to teach me how to navigate properly so I must have looked like a real orienteer. I got misdirected looking for #17 amongst a bunch of rocks until a friendly kangaroo stood up on his hind legs and pointed me in the right direction by hissing at me. Thanks fella!

I also beat Tooms. Yay :-) Not for the weekend though :-( I beat Phil again :-)

Very nice area - I hope it's not another ten years before we go back.

Orienteering (bush) 40:00 [2] ***
shoes: Salomon XT Wings red (2)

Control collecting and a fruitless search to find someone's lost SI tag. I had no chance really.
