Ok, better than last time, but still much room for improvement. Win for the day was limiting the mistakes when I made them (avoiding the 10 & 15 minute mistakes at Mohales). Still lost 4 min at #16 on a terrible angle and ultimately parallel error, but the rest was all < 1 min. Lots of small mistakes though. And I was slow on the terrain (too cautious), so I guess I could have made up 2 or 3 places with a cleaner run.
Bad start to 1 and 2 as I wasn't reading the detail well enough. Got caught out by a parallel earth bank to the cliff at #1 so didn't go far enough.
Ok from there, with small errors at 4 & 6.
Executed my planned route well to 8 but was slow through the rocks - probably faster dropping in from the top at the control.
Piers (3min) caught me at 9 and I led him into all the controls from 9-14. Was running harder than him, but he kept catching at each control.
Slightly wrong angle into 15 and then Piers and I took very different routes to 16. I went via the water near 19 (which I thought was 19 and would cause an error later on). Met up with Piers again in the valley and then we kind of followed each other at completely the wrong angle to the spur between 21 & 22, i.e. well down the ridge from the spur at 16. That cost us 4 mins.
Wrong angle to 17, but good on 18.
Thinking 19 was where I got water I just gunned straight for it and only realized at the control that 19 was actually slightly further up the valley. So Piers caught me again.
Together and clean to 20 & 21.
Got dragged onto the wrong angle to 22 by another control, but corrected on time. Piers had made the same mistake but went all the way to the wrong control before correcting back up the hill.
Pushed hard from there to try and get the 3 min gap on Piers, but fell short by 19s. (23-25 all easy and clean).
Later Michele snuck in ahead by 9s too. So I got chicked and geriatricked ;)
11th in the end, 19s behind Piers in 9th.
