Adventure Racing race (Kinetic Full Moon AR) 3:54:00 [4] 19.0 km (4.9 kph) +221m
shoes: Salomon XT Wings 2

The venue was the Ribbokkloof Lodge, about 40km NE of Middelburg. The area is pretty flat which led to some fast and furious MTB...

I raced with Kev, Seth and Martin as Team Charnas. Kev was pretty sick before the start but that didn't really show during the race with him hammering out the pace at the front no problem. We rocked a 24km/h avg speed for the first 47km MTB leg, using a paceline the whole way (I thought this was AR?). We arrived at the dam in 4th place and then Seth & I had a really chilled paddle while Kev & Marts struggled with their boat filling with water (they had forgotten to take the plugs out). We took a bit of a foolish "shortcut" across some really deep clay and then had a last short paddle up the river before a 500m portage to transition.

The hiking leg was fairly uneventful, even though we had a google earth map with clouds on it for navigation... We lost a few places on this hike as we were only running here and there but caught 4 teams again using a fast transition and hammering the pace on the MTB again. We dropped those teams on the mine road and managed to maintain 4th place up the short steep hill into transition. The trek was fairly technical which made it feel like an AR again and it was fun navigating through the valleys at night. Team Xhale (Cobus, Alex and co) caught us just past CP12 and we couldn't (or weren't inclined to) hold their pace. The last part of the hike was a steep descent to the roaring bonfire and our jembe-drumming, whooping supporters at the finish. The champagne went down pretty well too!

We were the 5th team to finish but the 3rd team received a 4h penalty for missing equipment so we finished 4th overall and 1st male team. It's good to be racing hard!

Leg details:

47km MTB (2h03m)
7km Paddle (1h05m)
8km Hike/Run (1h09m)
52km MTB (2h50m)
11km Hike (2h47m)

Logging each discipline separately - this is for the running/hiking.

Fran and I did the 1-hour course and enjoyed it immensely :) A few hesistations with missing cement mixers and incorrect house numbers but otherwise I think we did fairly well. We headed out to the NE where there was a dense cluster of 40s, 50s and 60s. Still waiting for results but we should have 550pts.
