Day 4: the bad weather that rolled in yesterday stayed and we hiked back the way we came through drizzle and rain. Steep downhill (1000m) at the end. We warmed ourselves with a hot soup at the refugio.

Hiking to the Geisers and bubbeling mud filled holes. Not as spectacular as e.g. Yellowstone but the remoteness and the ability to explore the area by yourself made it a great experience. The hike was again throgh very scarse landscape - thoughts of moon or desert came up.
The day started out hot again (25C?) but clouds came up soon and we heard thunder in the distance. We postponed our planned hike back to the refugio which was a good idea, because soon after the thunderstorm hit. Heavy rain, hail, thunder and lightning made it a scary experience and we were glad to find relative shelter in our tent. Soon our tent was surrounded by 2-5cm of hail which turned the landscape into winter wonderland.

Day 2: we started by hiking up to the top of Volcano Puyehue (2236m), a snow filled crater with magnificent round view of the surrounding Volcanos (Osorno, Puntiagudo, Tronador, Villarica and others). After descending back to our backpacks we hiked along the ridge of the volcano and through scarse landscape past fumaroles to the hot springs of El Caulle.

Hiking in the Puyehue National park.
Day 1: up to Refugio El Caulle
We started late because we drove 5h from Chiloe to the Park. Hot day and with the heavy bags it was quite a tough uphill.

With Rodolfo and Sarah, we did a hike on Chiloe-island.
Starting from Cucao we followed the beach for a couple hours. Then it went up to a nice viewpoint. We returned before arriving at Cole Cole.
Once back at the beach we were lucky to get a ride back (no road, just sand) including a water-crossing (50cm).
Because we were back earlier than planned, we did an other short hike in order to get hungry for the best smoked salmon we ever had.
