shoes: VJ iRock #2

Key session ahead of WLDMRC in 4wks time: double Snowdon. Almost thwarted by thunderstorms, fortunately there was enough of a gap between morning and afternoon storms to squeeze this in.

The main aim was to get used to climbing on legs that have just done a fast 900m descent, hence I used the 'boring' Llanberis path for both climbs. Didn't descend as fast as hoped but still found the second climb tough, so hopefully this did some good!

The second descent was a bit faster, which I'm putting down to the surge of adrenaline I got from being tripped up by a walker's flailing wizard stick just after the summit. Arms and elbows fairly battered and bruised but only surface damage - it could have been a lot worse.

Grantchester loop, with T for company on bike for a bit, then 4x2km tempo on the busway. Pace about 3:17/km, fairly happy with that. 60-90s recovery.

Running 37:00 [3] 8.0 km (4:38 / km)

Short one after getting back from Bristol. Legs felt ok for more but decided to freshen up and then go for it over the weekend.

Running 50:30 [3] 8.4 km (6:01 / km) +480m 4:41 / km

In Bristol again. Managed to forget my road shoes so was limited to what I could do in the track shoes I'd left in London. Hill reps wasn't the plan for the day after track but they worked out ok. 30 mins of solid effort on the zigzag path to the Clifton bridge. (6ups,5dns)
Legs feeling surprisingly ok

Running 1:23:00 [3] 16.6 km (5:00 / km)

5*1000m off 75s. Breezy so taking turns in the lead. 2:59 felt ok till the 4th when suddenly legs felt pretty heavy. Did another to help the boys through halfway then scuttled off to do hill sprints. Parli hill isn't really steep enough though and the track banking isn't long enough.

Pretty slow start, helped by a Steve Magness podcast chatting about how slow Paul Tergat was spotted jogging in Central Park aweek before he won NY marathon. Freshened up in the Hudson Ale House and was running ok up to meet Coombs in Haymakers.

Westminster to track with heavy bag then 16x400(60). Heavy legs and a few weeks since last track session so I worked my way through it, starting at 71/72 pace and moving to solid 66s for the last 6. Hoped to get a bit faster still for the last 3 but everything said no.

Strides at the end of a run always seem like a good idea until an hour into your run when you get a bit tired, and as such I rarely do them. Tonight I discovered the secret to getting them done: stop for a pint in the Free Press then smash out the efforts on Parker's Piece on the way home with legs feeling fresher. Reward yourself with a second pint in the Flying Pig.

6 PM

Running 45:00 [3] 10.0 km (4:30 / km)
shoes: ASICS gel Luminous #2 (Blue)

Run down to Cramond from office. Legs seriously wondering what the point of trying to race is.

Running race 15:11 [3] 5.0 km (3:02 / km)
shoes: Asics Hyperspeed #2

Shut up legs.

A steady start left me deep in the third group after the lollipop. Realised I needed to make the jump up to the seconds group, c 30m ahead, so focussed on that for the first half of the return. Once I got on their tails and in a bit of shelter it was relatively easy to work through to the front of that group, which I did at the final turn. I tried to keep the momentum going but faltered with 600 to go and Mr Leitch and a couple of others came through. When. I saw the clock and no chance of <15 I cruised it in a bit. 10th in the end. PW for the course.

Thanks to Tom (5th in 14:47) and Jonny (13th in 15:18) and new three to score format HBT took the national title: our first male title at any discipline since 2006.
