Running 1:10:00 [1] 11.28 km (6:12 / km)

A light run. Calves feel a little sore, I think from the now chucked Kinvaras. Ran a few steep climbs along the way to work on the leg strength. Was heading back along the field when I came across two coyotes, who were remarkably stubborn, and stood pretty close to the trail I was going on. They just would turn around and look at me and not move. So... they win. I went around.

Did you know that the Burkwood Viburnum is a shrub with simple leaves and its flowers are pinkish white? There's absolutely nothing crazy about that!

Running 1:30:00 [1] 16.89 km (5:20 / km)
shoes: Saucony Kinvara

Long-ish run around a semi-usual route. Felt fairly good, would have liked to go more, but had to head to the shop. Calves felt very tight, distinct sign that my Kinvaras are extremely dead. So this was their last run. Unfortunately there's nothign at the shop I really want right now, no Kinvara's in my size, and the Brooks stuff haven't arrive yet. The Asics Tarther impressed me a lot, but its a racing flat. I wish my damn Karhu order would show up.

On the learn-ding front, today's lesson was:

Did you know that there is someone out there that actually bothered to make a page about this? Crazy!

Podcast update: Claimed a gmail address for the name.

.....

Shut up. They're called baby steps.

Running 1:12:00 [1] 12.81 km (5:37 / km) +107m 5:24 / km
shoes: Saucony Kinvara

Nice run around Laurier. Had to run the trail I'm doing for the first part of my ?-part series on single track trails around Edmonton, since I didn't remember how long it was. Then did 3 reps climbing out of the river valley over by whitemud. I like to doing that loop, there are two different climbs, and then I run down the stairs, trying to have as high a tempo as possible down the stairs. Calf felt very stretched out by the end, will have to keep an eye on that. Averaged 4:45-ish on the flatter section of the trails, and felt comfortable with that, which is good. But not good if I ever plan on running with the rest of the Fast Trax guys. Running their paces make me hurt. And its significantly slower.

Then went home and ate dinner and rocked out far too many times to Tiesto and Swedish House Mafia while working on my downtown map(s) and watching the maximum amount of baseball I can stand (1 inning).

What did I learn about today?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arun_Maira

Did you know that this guy was the head of the Boston Consulting Group, which coincidentally created a Matrix (called the BCG chart) which helps companies make a strategic analysis of their different assets based on market share and market growth? I actually remember something from my MBA? Crazy!

Running intervals 1:10:00 [4]
shoes: Saucony Kinvara

Was initially planning on doing 8 x 5 minutes @ 10k pace, but ran out of time and only did 6. Legs felt okay, stomach not so happy. I also really wish I'd done an actual measured 10k or 5k or something to get a more solid read on my pace. There were opportunities, just always something conflicting! Doh! Also my shoes are so falling apart, but my stupid Karhu order still hasn't arrived, but they took my money a month ago!

Ran out of time because I went down to the ENSC race team ski swap, sold 1 pair of skis, a pair of boots, and a binding, so I'm up $575! That'll pay for... maybe 1/4 of my gear for next season? 4 new pairs of Fischers, new classic boots, possibly some Triacs and maybe new Skate boots if those Madshus are as comfortable as the classics. And maybe a new outfit. And Oakley FastJackets when they're available in custom. And that cool looking Swix backpack. And I'd need matching gloves with my Triacs, of course. And I'm almost out of Vega powder. Oh crap and I'll need Xcelerator bindings for all those skis! And maybe one of those new Garmins. I think I may have a problem.

On the learning front, today's topic is:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strmo_Rebro

Did you know this town has a population of only 11 people, yet it still has its own Wikipedia page? Crazy!

Podcast interest generally positive (I'm extrapolating), so time to write up some possible material for 4-5 episodes, just to know I could plausibly come up with topics to keep it going past one. Also buy a decent mic. Found one for 50 bucks which got the CBC associate producer seal of approval.

Roller Ski 45:00 [1]

Some roller-skiing double-poling with Paul. I'm not sure my wrists or hands could take much more. I was glad I went and did this in light of the two and a half hours of junior program tonight. Not very fast moving at all. There's just not enough hours in the day. Tomorrow might not go well either. Part of the problem is I just can't get into the training mood past 6:30. If I haven't started by then I don't ever seem to. I guess because then you train, and everything afterwards, and then you don't eat until 10.

Today, I learned about:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hawaiian_Punch

Did you know that Hawaiian Punch actually only contains 5% juice and it actually used to be an ice cream topping? Crazy!

Also, quick poll of all two of my readers, if I were to truly get my nerd on and do an orienteering podcast, would you co-host sometimes?

Weights 30:00 [1]

First indoor soccer game of the season. Fun, though I often feel guilty about it, since if I really work hard, I'm all over the place and have too much possession. Even if I worked hard, though, still wouldn't count as training! :)

Half an hour of basement weights afterwards, though. Which does count. Since the games will be on Tuesday, I think an ideal scenario will be either to go straight to skiing, or drive straight to the gym and put in a workout. I had to hit the groc store on the way home though, and that kind of killed my intensity buzz.

And tomorrow is two hours of kids program in the dark. The course the have planned would be hard for me in the dark! Those poor kids....

Also, new feature! Every day I click on "random article" on Wikipedia and learn something that might be correct! Today's subject:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mary_of_Woodstock

Did you know that she, despite being a nun, was granted (by her parents) twenty "tuns" of wine per year, and ran up considerable gambling debts? Crazy!

Running 1:20:00 [1]
shoes: Saucony Kinvara

Well, its a new training year, as far as I'm concerned. Two weeks of light training, and we're back in business. Sort of. So many things going on that nothing goes quite as well as planned. Been really thinking about getting a real running coach instead of just my traditional winging it. I think winging it will only get me so far (38th, as it were). Unfortunately, there are so many politics in this decision that I don't think I'm going to be able to do it. For an individual sport, running sure does have a lot of stupid team dynamics I have to deal with. Yeesh.
