Orienteering race 31:09 [4] *** 2.1 km (14:50 / km) +145m 11:02 / km
spiked:12/15c shoes: XTalon 2017

STB 5 Sleeping Giant. The physical terrain day and lived up to billing. Not up to running in terrain at the moment no matter how steep but did surprisingly well placing wise, I think everyone in the class was having an attack of the headless chickens and for once I wasn't the biggest victim. A bit pissed to lose a minute to 3 trying to go through a mapped fence gap where there was definitely a fence. But also there's a right hand route that I don't know that anyone used and is now looking pretty good on paper. Also lost a bit in the 6-10 loop losing track of the tracks and going around imaginary climb.

Orienteering race 25:53 [5] *** 3.7 km (7:00 / km) +35m 6:41 / km
spiked:20/21c shoes: Asics Trabuco 2018

STB 6 The Village (Havo North). As brutal as the morning but completely different reasons. Super hot and super fast and desperate to get the 1.5 minutes to get in front of Croxford. Just a small in-circle mistake at 6 but otherwise clean so far as I can tell. Which is good given the number of times I hit the wall (especially on the 2nd lap) there's no way I could rely on the physical side. Think I ended up in 4th overall which with the quality of our Aussie visitors is about as much as I could hope for.

Orienteering race 19:00 [4] **** 3.0 km (6:20 / km) +20m 6:08 / km
spiked:17/20c shoes: Asics Trabuco 2018

STB 3 Arataki. A bit of a mystery. Felt really slow, an annoying run of mistakes on 2 (stopped in circle with control behind me), 4 (funneled onto an unintentional but good route choice) and 5 (area not as visualised, distracted by another runner) and among the slowest splits on almost every leg. But best placing so far and up a rung or 2 on the overall standing. I guess others were making bigger mistakes, spread around the course!

Orienteering 21:42 [5] *** 3.1 km (7:00 / km) +23m 6:45 / km
spiked:26/29c shoes: Asics Trabuco 2018

STB 4 Fore! (Hastings golf course) Paired start with Michael Croxford. A couple of silly moments in the first phi (including briefly trying to exit it one control early) kept him ahead until I got past on 9-10. But he must have been just behind for the rest or maybe got back on me when I was a bit tangled up near 23 as he was just a few seconds behind at the finish. Glad I didn't know that until after we finished actually!

Orienteering race 22:00 [4] **** 3.0 km (7:20 / km) +25m 7:02 / km
spiked:18/22c shoes: Asics Trabuco 2018

STB 1, EIT campus. Mass start although that was fairly irrelevant for me, firing on about 1.5 cylinders. Managed to get around better than expected though. Would have been nice to have a good technical performance to make up for the physical but lost a couple of minutes on 14 very much loosing map contact (and at least 2 places) then probably as a result of that was wobbly on a couple of controls afterwards, doubting interpretation etc.

Orienteering race 24:19 [4] **** 2.6 km (9:21 / km) +78m 8:08 / km
spiked:19/21c shoes: Asics Trabuco 2018

STB 2 Te Aute. Hot. Struggling to take in air and suspect fully functioning lungs wouldn't have made much difference. Also should have changed shoes, but was always going to struggle physically here so why bother? So much walking! Better technically than the morning, apart from a small but dumb mistake after the spectator leg, although I could probably drop the spike rate a bit if I was to relook at route choices critically

Note
(sick)

So it's possible the reason the hills were getting progressively bigger as yesterday went on is that I'm coming down with a cold? Missed the relay (which had turned into something somewhat different to what I'd signed up for) in the hope that will increase my chance of still being ok for the 2nd course of the sprint feast
