Orienteering race 17:50 [5] **** 1.5 km (11:53 / km) +75m 9:31 / km
spiked:13/15c shoes: Asics 2017

Sprint Relay, Vic Uni. Ran 2nd of 2 legs (SR1 variation). Felix tagged me in maybe about 4th or 5th - in the first sort of loose bunch a bit behind Connor, anyway. No pressure, then. I'm aware of Magnus, Stuart and maybe a young dude (Olivernicus? not sure) getting past me, but also eventually got away from at least 2 I'd started just behind and saw a lot of early, so probably ended with a similar placing. Should have looked at the map properly before leaving the start triangle - gave my self a bit of bonus distance and a lot of bonus stair climbing for #1. And #8 completely misread where the control was - picked a great route to where I thought it was! (then went to where it should have been, rather than where it had been shifted to to avoid construction, which would have been fine if I'd been approaching from a sensible direction) But only doing that for 1 of 3 in the Wai-te-ata maze is doing quite well (although I did somehow get to #7 before expecting it - would have turned into a nasty mistake if I hadn't recognised the control number as I ran past). You definitely work harder than in an individual sprint, what with other runners around the whole time - which makes this a particularly brutal map for a SR - feeling every slight uphill by the end!

Orienteering intervals (Sprint intervals) 16:00 [4] **** 1.3 km (12:18 / km) +60m 10:00 / km
shoes: Asics 2017

Sprint Intervals at Vic including parts of the map not used for the relay. 6 participants - including a token Swede, Irishman, Brit, girl and random old guy (I think Magnus was happy for me to join so that he could be the token Swede rather than token old guy). Time and distance total fudge, I'm guessing I averaged about 4 minutes per section that I did, and also guessing how much the one section I missed took out of the total distance. I started each interval first, but I think my head start before the others mass started was basically always just their reaction time... so a lot of pack running, and maybe not always a lot of navigation... including a bit of hilarity early on when Ellie successfully led everyone but Magnus down a long blind alley above a control (in my defense there was no point trying to navigate to that control as I found that part of the map basically unreadable). Fun session anyway.

Orienteering race 1:32:50 [3] **** 6.0 km (15:28 / km) +125m 14:01 / km

QB day 3. Shortened long, with enough decent longish legs that I'm happy to call it that. Shocking conditions (not literally - the nearest lightning strike would have been a few seconds time difference away), but I'm not going to blame throwing things away on the 2nd control on that. Think I was expecting the control too soon, then found a whole bunch of (unmapped?) stuff that I could fit to features past the control - which means when I bit the bullet and went up to the edge of the native block to relocate I then failed to find the native block... 10 plus wasted minutes later... after that, up and down through to the spectator leg (some really good legs in there and some less so) but sort of lost interest by then through cumulative mistakes and being soaked through and pretty much just finished because it would have been dumb not to.
