Orienteering 1:16:59 [3] *** 5.6 km (13:45 / km) +360m 10:24 / km
spiked:10/12c shoes: XTalon 2017

Belmont Bunkers, Red Long. Good course on a map that it would be easy to set a bad course on. Very physical, but no surprises there, not helped by a very strong wind building up. Had nothing on the big climbs - pretty sure I'm coming down with a cold which wouldn't have helped. Only nav glitch was in the circle for 5 (although maybe didn't execute the route on that leg as well as possible either). But not only didn't take the best route 6-7, didn't even see the best route (down then up then into the control from behind, rather than up then down, with about a minute in it). In a good little route choice battle I had with Bill T who caught me early, I think that's the only leg he would claim. I might have taken some different choices though if wind speed and direction was mapped!

Run 37:00 [3]
shoes: Asics 2017

About 50% for recovery, 50% to not start getting lazy despite not having decided on the next target. A couple of very indirect laps of Trentham Memorial. Felt shattered at the start (still pretty tired) but one of those nice ones that got easy very quickly.

Run warm up/down 5:00 [2]
shoes: XTalon 2017

Squeezed in between finding out if I was actually going to get to run, and assembling for the start.

Orienteering race 57:17 [4] **** 5.7 km (10:03 / km) +175m 8:43 / km

NZ Champs, Relay - or individual mass-start in my case as I took the first leg from a team that hadn't shown up. And not so much mass-start in my case as most of the other 'Open' runners had left me and my tired legs behind by the triangle. More 'typical' Woodhill than the individual races had been, so I think that helped a much improved technical performance - once I'd got visiting all the first controls out of my system. Alone in the coastal strip but fairly clean - apart from losing a bit of time on 4, more from slowing right down due to lack of confidence than any actual mistake. Second wind once heading back inland, helped that I had started to pick up a few of the younger guys running 1st leg. 14 had to pause a bit to pick what part of the slope was going to funnel into the reentrant I wanted, but other than that clean to the finish and even picked up a good head of speed by the end (might as well when it's the last race). Wasn't last, and bet the leading 2nd leg runners back by a fair bit... but hopefully next year (assuming no further spontaneous rule changes) will get to run Masters... and in an actual team...
