Walking 3:30:00 [1]

Mt Taranaki, a bit of a wander with the Scott parents to up above the treeline (unfortunately also to the bottom of the one belt of cloud that was hanging off the mountain) then down through some awesome montane forest.

Run warm up/down 20:00 [3]

See yesterday!

Orienteering race 31:26 [4] *** 2.9 km (10:50 / km) +100m 9:15 / km
spiked:15/20c

Hoaketanga "west". Complete madness in the cemetary. Seemed to find most of the controls OK but have little idea how. A little affected by the mystery of where exactly north was ( though not as badly as the map-makers) Had aimed to not use up all of my 5 or 6 or whatever minute buffer over Magnus but he caught me at 16. Burned him off through 17 and 18 but then he got away again.

Orienteering race 25:17 [5] *** 2.4 km (10:32 / km) +65m 9:17 / km
spiked:17/24c

Hoaketanga "east", soutwest of this morning's map. Very much a sprint race, mostly on campus terrain, in theory I should have been all over it. Unfortunately my sprint-brain seems a little broken - something I need to sort out before HB! Absolute mess of 3 of the first 5 controls - despite the scale being the same as this morning everything was coming up way too fast. Finally got into the scale about 6. Took the road run 7-8, still maintain it's at least even with the straight route if not actually better & had the whole 8-13 loop planned by the end of it (so at least that went well). Then in the last campus section (17-23) just couldn't take in any useful info without slowing right down

Run warm up/down 20:00 [3]

About 20 mins total, before, between and after races

Orienteering race 43:51 [5] *** 3.7 km (11:51 / km) +170m 9:38 / km
spiked:16/19c

Pukekura Park. Annoying. Should have been a top 10 result, caught Swanson by a minute by 3rd control. Lost a few seconds on 4 but kinda expected to because I couldn't really read the garden/yellow edges, and a minute or so on 8 attempting the straight green route but ending up on the alternative track anyway - which was way faster or would have been if I'd picked it in the first place. Then threw away 5 minutes on 11 getting stuck in jungle having somehow managed to not see there was a track run that was only slightly less direct. AAARGGHH!! Also a bit of time lost near the end after I coated myself and the crucial part of the map in mud in a stream-crossing gone wrong.

Karl not surprisingly fastest (27:36) but Mark L without local knowledge was 2nd in 31:11

Orienteering race 37:16 [4] *** 3.1 km (12:01 / km) +140m 9:48 / km
spiked:13/18c

Pukekura Park. A bit less run in the legs, and couldn't really see a thing (it was raining, hard) from about the 6th leg on. Didn't help myself with trouble in the circle 1, 2, 12 & 17, and even less so by overunning 5 (30 seconds there and a couple of minutes in total). Even more annoyed now by blowing the am race as it appears that was my big chance!

Karl 22:31, BJ 27:54.

Orienteering race 27:26 [4] *** 2.5 km (10:58 / km) +40m 10:10 / km
spiked:14/18c

Audrey Gale, B4NY race 2 - but race 1 for me. Didn't get round to warming up and between that and mugginess was fairly sluggish out of the box. Also pretty rough navigation wise but only a few mistakes of significance - could maybe cut out 2 minutes. Did bag a split (shared so can't claim full honours) near the end where Ellmo caught me. Mark L fastest @ 18:52

Run warm up/down 5:00 [3]

Warmed down after.
