Run race 24:52 [5] 5.0 km (4:58 / km)
shoes: Asics Trabuco 2018

Hagley 5k. First km felt really good for about 4:45. Second km started to struggle but kept the same pace. And then declined from there... Should probably be pleased just to be able to have run, after the weekend just gone

Orienteering race ('middle') 1:10:02 [4] *** 3.5 km (20:01 / km) +215m 15:18 / km
spiked:11/14c shoes: XTalon 2017

SI Champs 'Middle distance'. Super steep, super hot and a bit of a disaster. Fairly messy at the beginning with a little miss on 2, a bit more on 3 and a big one on 5, but was still doing well relative to everyone but Carsten. Then the big unavoidable climb to 7 totally did me in, and suffering badly from overheating from then on - close to autopilot for the remainder of the course, but no more navigation mistakes....?!?

Orienteering 1:33:19 [3] *** 7.0 km (13:20 / km) +360m 10:36 / km
spiked:13/14c shoes: XTalon 2017

South Island Champs Long Distance, Cape Campbell. Never intended to take this seriously, but still pushed reasonably hard, (when I wasn't stopping to take photos, good call btw, scenery was spectacular). Not overly technical but some good route choice legs. I'm pretty sure I took the best option on the biggest leg, but still lost time here faffing around at the start of the leg, terrain wasn't quite how I'd pictured it. Time good enough to wonder what if I had given it a real go?

Orienteering race (sprint ) 21:26 [5] **** 2.9 km (7:23 / km) +3m 7:21 / km
spiked:22/24c shoes: Asics Trabuco 2018

South Island Champs Sprint, Blenheim. After well over an hour stopped on the trip up due to someone trying to park their car on a power pole, got there just in time to make my start time. Which maybe explains the mess I made on the first leg completely misreading where I was in the buildings, dropping as much as 40 seconds. Settled down after that, looks like I must have been pretty quick through the park/gardens session but then started to battle physically. Missed what I think might be best route 19-20, needed to look a lot further from the red line to see it.

Note

walking towards Hagley from work had a tight spot somewhere near the Achilles zone quickly get tighter and tighter... decided if I'm about to wreck something again I'd rather do it orienteering this weekend than in a stupidly hot 5k run...

Run 58:00 [3]
shoes: Asics Trabuco 2018

Red zone, what I thought would be a shorter circuit than my usual, but apparently not.

Run (terrain) 1:12:30 [3]
shoes: XTalon 2017

Bottle Lake, Long circuit. Par time for what felt like a very sub-par performance - lost momentum on the open sandy ridges (at about 30 minutes) and while I did eventually get over a bit of stop-start, never really felt fluid again afterwards. Given how the time compares to what felt like better efforts, maybe the problem was I set out a bit faster than I should have? Admittedly I did spot a turn in the marked trail that I've missed every other visit, but if anything that 'new' section would have added a tiny bit of time as it snakes around a bit more than the road section that I've previously done instead.

Run 33:00 [3]
shoes: Asics Trabuco 2018

Gentle run home from work, via Gardens/Hagley, trying to ease some of last night's suffering out of the legs.

Run warm up/down 12:00 [2]
shoes: Asics Trabuco 2018

Run race 24:46 [5] 5.0 km (4:57 / km)
shoes: Asics Trabuco 2018

Hagley Park 5k. Very slight improvement on last week. Managed the pacing over the first half a bit better (assuming that the 2nd k was just under 5 minutes rather than just under 4 that my run-addled brain thought at the time) but still struggled in the second half (don't know how much of that was psychological from thinking I'd stupidly pushed way too hard in that 2nd k!)

Run 58:00 [3]
shoes: Asics Trabuco 2018

Red zone, usualish circuit from home. A while to get into it but then felt really good. Given the coolish conditions thought it might be a good day to extend out to the next bridge downstream from where I've been turning, but couldn't remember how much further that would be. Wise move. Would have at least doubled the distance!

Run warm up/down 10:00 [2]
shoes: Asics Trabuco 2018

Run race 24:54 [4] 5.0 km (4:59 / km)
shoes: Asics Trabuco 2018

Hagley Park 5k. Had hoped that I'd manage to go under 25 but expected it would be hard work. Right on both counts. 4:40 for the first kilometre which felt pretty comfortable, but definitely didn't have 4 more of those in the tank....

Run (terrain) 1:03:00 [3]
shoes: XTalon 2017

Bottle Lake. Started off pretty well, surprisingly smooth and felt good. However thought I'd better bypass the open sandy ridge section at about the 30 minute mark. A wise idea in principle but turns out the forest track running parallel turns into a deep sandpit anyway. That brought me to a halt then couldn't get running for more than a couple minute bursts after getting out of it so decided to take the short loop home - then had to turn the watch off while finding where the short loop forks off - the trail map needs some work here! Got my mojo back once back underway, which is good as it turns out the short loop isn't that much shorter apparently!

Run 39:00 [3]
shoes: Asics Trabuco 2018

Hagley Park. Just under 29 minutes continuous (was aiming for 25, so a pass) with a short warm-up and even shorter warm-down at either end. HOT - but only felt an issue when I ran out of trees to be under and/or river to be nearby.
