Run 25:20 [3]

Around the 'hood. Felt better than I thought it would because I've been feeling like a cold is on the way but no sign of anything like that going on.

Saturday Aug 24, 2013 #

Note

Too tired over the weekend for any running. Went for a walk up to the Whakarewarewa lookouts with the girl and the dogs, but not really a loggable one

Walking (fieldwork) 5:00:00 [2]

Following Steve around on the start of his first trap-check proper, to reassure him on technique and as an extra back for carrying (much needed) replacement traps, gas and lures. So while very stop-start while on the lines (trap spacing 25 m), was over often rough ground with a heavy pack. Imagined conversation with my physio: "No Melissa, of course I wasn't using my dodgy ankle to balance on 1 foot on a slippery narrow log with a heavy pack on my back and another bag dangling off one arm". Strangely my foot feels a bit "used" this morning, today might be a rest day.

Rifleman, robins, tomtits, bellbirds, tui, warblers, kaka, kereru, kahu, falcon... nice day.

Run 20:00 [3]

Thanks to the weather, had a good day for finishing off all the administration stuff and getting all the project gear TK had stored out of the way out for easy access and organising packloads for tomorrow's effort. Cleared up just late enough to not be worthwhile getting out onto the lines.

After a nice session sitting on the deck of the quarters listening to a kokako calling in the trees just across the road, remembered that I had brought running gear. Ran from quarters down to the Tumanako track entrance (and a little way down the track, but it was starting to get dark in the bush). Was aware this was downhill almost all the way, and sure enough when I turned around to get back home it was then uphill almost all the way. Between that and the head-ful of snot it was a nice surprise to be able to keep running for the allotted time, even if the 2nd half probably didn't look very impressive.

Nicest place I've run for a long time, but also The Coldest!

Walking (fieldwork) 1:30:00 [1]

At Boundary Stream. Rough underfoot but light pack. Checking out a couple of the traplines with Steve just to see how easy he was going to find it getting around - needn't have worried as the legend we had working at this site last season had of course left everything well-marked. And did a few 'mock' trap checks.

Stationary Bike tempo 30:00 [4] 15.7 km (1:55 / km)

A little under the weather, but not sure how the next few days (when I'll be at one of our field sites) are going to pan out, so thought I'd better get something in.

Walking 1:15:00 [1]

Giving the head a bit of much needed clearance (or trying to) at Pukemokemoke, which turned out to be a nice little forest remnant on a nice little hill not far from home. If I'm ever back into looking for nice up&down&uneven ground running, there's potential here with maybe jyst enough track distance to justify the drive-there distance

Run 20:00 [3]

Continuous! Never thought such a short jaunt around my not particularly interesting neighbourhood would please me so much. Foot a bit sore all over, but being all over there's nothing I can relate directly to the original injuries.

Something I've found fascinating through this process is how quickly the body adapts to each new benchmark. Everytime the longest continuous run has got longer, no matter how fine I feel at the beginning and the end there's a point around the previous benchmark where the legs have piped up: hang on, this is where we stop isn't it? True to form, the 11th minute was the hardest today.

Run 20:00 [3]

2 x 10 minutes. At various times during both 'legs' I was feeling terrible but the end of each 10 I kind of almost felt like I could carry on a bit longer. Kind of. Next outing MAY be 20 minutes in one go. We'll see.

Walking 15:00 [1]

The whole session gets shorter as the run 'bursts' get longer. But looks like I can soon start bulking my hours up with more running time in total instead :-)

Stationary Bike intervals 27:50 [3]

Stationary Bike intervals 7:30 [5]

Guess I was due a bit of a failed session. Soon as I pushed into the first interval knew it just wasn't really happening tonight, legs felt really heavy and thighs felt on the verge of straining. Struggled through 6 repeats, rarely hitting the 40km/h+ target, before throwing in the towel.

Stationary Bike 45:00 [3] 20.2 km (2:14 / km)

As the great Hamilton blizzard entered the second day, I found myself completely snowed in so had to resort to the acycle for training...

...feeling a little sluggish after not enough sleep over the weekend, so only ever intended a relatively easy session. Made myself aim for at least a half hour at nothing-flash-but-at-least-it feels-like exercise pace. When I got within a couple of minutes of that minimum target I made a deal with myself that I would carry on to the end of the next song on my player. Inevitably that turned out to be the Phoenix Foundation's Friendly Society. If that means nothing to you, it's bound to be out there on the internet somewhere by now. Track it down and have a listen.

If you have a spare 17 minutes, that is.

Walking 2:30:00 [2]

Got some possible fieldwork coming up soon & my boss doesn't want to send me out if I'm going to come back broken the next day. So loaded up a pack and went for a bit of a jaunt in the northern Hakarimata to see what would happen. Which turned out to be nothing, really, except that it rained a bit, and I can hardly put that down to a weak ankle.

Note

Oh yeah, said I was going to start tracking my statnav ranking, better get July's figures down before they're replaced by August's...

Overall 195 (up 2)
Points 5542 (=)
Men 138 (up 1)
Age class 11 (=)

This is brilliant, all I need to do is continue not orienteering and in less than 100 months I'll be top of the country! ;-)

Run 20:00 [3]

5+10+5 minutes. No repeat of any foot-arch issues, but feeling every bit of last night's efforts!

Walking 20:00 [1]

including a little bit of jogging too, because I actually find it easier to get back up the river terrace into town that way than walking it!

Stationary Bike intervals 46:15 [3] 31.4 km (1:28 / km)
weight:73.8kg

Nothing like a bit of torture on a Wednesday evening

Stationary Bike intervals 13:45 [5]

11 x 1:15. Feel free to correct my maths, folks

Run 20:00 [3]

6+8+6 minutes. All good until sharp pain in arch of foot right at end

Walking 25:00 [1]

Run 20:00 [3]

4+6+6+4 mins, Hamilton Lake and immediate surrounds.

Couldn't really see a way to incorporate the orienteering into what was needed, so was going to fit this in between helping get the starters off and helping recieve the finishers. But got chatting to course-setter Sam and suddenly most of the 90 minute time limit was up..! So went for a jaunt afterwards. Felt good.

Stationary Bike 45:30 [4] 23.9 km (1:54 / km)

I'm starting to worry about my relationship with the penance machine. Even under strictest adherence to physio's rules I was allowed a run today, it's a nice day for it, but I did this instead. I'm claiming that by not running today I'm leaving the option open for the orienteering tomorrow, but still, I've got to wonder. (today's ride was 40 mins trying to stay over 30km/h, with a bit of warm up and down time)

Run 20:00 [3]

3+4+6+4+3 minutes. 6 minutes feels a fair bit longer than 5 at this stage of the game :-/ No stigmata this time and the only time the ankle really complained was when I stepped off the paving onto the grass which at times turned out to be a bit lumpier than it looked.
