Note

A good weekend, but strangely I've been feeling like an old man today...

Orienteering 1:12:00 [3] **** 6.8 km (10:35 / km)
spiked:15/18c shoes: X Talon 2020

Casual training, Bottle Lake. Took a few controls to warm up physically but even more so mentally, no real mistakes, just no focus. Then went pretty well 4-14, apart from 12 where I tried to use some vegetation no longer there as an attackpoint, then blundered around a bit until Jenni who was taking a much more systematic approach to the same problem found the control. Then coming into the northern block lost my sense of direction somewhat, completely blowing a control, and as I was under time constraints just headed back from there, picking up the last 3 as I went. The northern block looked fun but I think I'd done my dash to be honest!

Social climbing 1:30:00 [4]

At the Y, a little bit of solo bouldering to warm up, then a good session with Maggie although I feel I was missing a bit of stretch and flexibility. And when the gas ran out it hit hard! Time to try and make this a regular thing again...

Run 1:16:00 [3]
shoes: Asics Trabuco 2018

Default hour plus loop - Hagley, Mona Vale, rail path then burbs home. Up as far as Blighs (?) Road before turning which put me briefly in unfamiliar territory until I recognised St Andrews and knew approximately how to get home from there. Didn't feel great for the first 20 minutes or so and thought I might be reporting my first failure of the current reboot, but pressed on...

Run 38:00 [3]
shoes: Asics Trabuco 2018

Lovely warm day for a plod. City and red-zone as far as Stanmore Rd and back. Had almost no luck with traffic so very stop start, I'll blame that for not being able to get into a cruise mode.

Orienteering (night, score) 54:06 [3] *** 5.2 km (10:24 / km)
shoes: X Talon 2020

NightNav 3, Bottle Lake. Forgot to recharge or replace my torch batteries, but figured surely I'd be able to squeeze another hour out of them. Turns out no, so within the first few minutes of starting it became apparent that I would be getting shorter and shorter glimpses of the map, terrain, or watch as the night went on. But persisted, and it wasn't until around the 20-30 minute mark when I simultaneously ran out of trains to share light with and hit the only part of the plan that required a lot of time off track that I decided I should just head back. Was able to pick up 3 more controls on the way home pretty much solely by moonlight which makes up for one in the forest that I must have basically gone right past. All very entertaining really.

Walking 3:00:00 [1]

Trig M route, Korowai Torlesse Conservation Park. Much easier than the track from the bottom of the hill but still a fair bit of steep climb to get up to the ridgeline, Then more up & down than I remembered on the ridge. Had hoped to carry on a bit from the trig this time, if not all the way to Rabbit Hill, but Stella's boots had started eating her heels (tbh I wasn't feeling the most sprightly anyway) so turning back sooner rather than later seemed sensible. Rather cold in the wind!

Run (off-road) 1:15:00 [3]
shoes: X Talon 2020

Bottle Lake long blue route. Haven't done this for AAAAGES so I don't know if I should be most surprised by:
A) The time. Without looking up previous efforts I'm pretty sure par for this was around 1:15 to 1:20
B) The lack of any walking breaks - even on the open sandy ridge or the long soul-sucking stretch along the landfill fence (the latter came close to getting me, helpfully there wasn't any real headwind)
C) Almost no issues with missing some of the mysterious corners and junctions - until right near the end when I got on a trail that I don't think I've seen before. Pretty sure this wouldn't be a shortcut before anyone relates it to point A, but it did mean I missed the gravel road stretch right near the end of the 'proper' loop which I've never enjoyed.

Run 38:00 [3]
shoes: Asics Trabuco 2018

Easy plod with a bit of stretching.

Orienteering (night, score) 59:05 [3] *** 3.44 km (17:11 / km) +270m 12:20 / km
shoes: X Talon 2020

Night Nav #2, Halswell (that ends well). Won't have a competitive score mainly because what looked to be the best plan for me in an hour was basically the same as what I did my last time here so instead diverted out to the fairly isolated 100 pointer on a part of the map I haven't checked out before. Apart from the big climbs was a lovely night out, and the nav mostly went well - I'm not sure if the times that it didn't on (I think) 3 controls would have added up to enough that I could have got that one more 30 pointer in the final rush home. (would have added a few hundred metres but all on the flat... so... maybe?)

Run 1:04:30 [3]
shoes: Asics Trabuco 2018

Sunset run, Hagley Park and various extra bits. That was a nice surprise - an hour is always a bit of a psychological barrier when you're getting back into things and I only decided part way through that I was going for it. Felt like I had quite a bit more in the tank too (but was starting to get sore in various places) (including the neck?!?!?). And that was with the pace lifting up a few times past what it should for a first 'long' run....

Note

Helping at the schools orienteering sprint. Was only on the pack-up crew but correctly anticipated there would be a few kids run right past the finish punch so hung around the finish all afternoon directing anyone back who needed it. Had hoped to then get a run in myself but after several hours standing in the cold wind, stripping down to running gear just seemed a stupid idea. I think also the cold and standing around was the reason I wasn't feeling 100% on Sunday so failed on the exercise front both days.

Run 34:00 [3]
shoes: Asics Trabuco 2018

Out at lunchtime to give the legs a bit of a stretch after last night's efforts. Took a while to warm them up enough to stretch'm! (It's COLD outside)

Orienteering (night, score) 1:00:39 [3] *** 4.4 km (13:47 / km) +190m 11:20 / km
shoes: X Talon 2020

Night Nav, Cass Bay. As we're now into my 3rd season here I can declare it traditional that my first night nav appearance of the year will involve a high standard of headless chookery. Not so bad this year apart from not getting my head into the scale and finding what was supposed to be my third control just when I was deciding if it was time to jump off track for what was supposed to be my second. But very stop start and I think I was helped more than a few times by others getting to a control just before I did. Probably still covered more than I was expecting to and had enough time in hand coming to the end of my plan that it was worth having another go at that naughty 53 that I'd missed earlier. Only this time I jumped off the track too soon which was probably the difference between under time and over time. But still a net gain of 30 points after penalties - good old tactical lateness!

Orienteering 1:18:51 [3] **** 3.1 km (25:26 / km) +160m 20:13 / km
spiked:13/16c shoes: Last Jalas ever

PAPO OY, Castle Hill Village. Would be very happy with this, with mostly spikes or nearly so after taking a control or 2 to get my head into the game. ....But 15 minutes or thereabouts on control 10, including still missing it the first time I 'safely' relocated off one of the main tracks, kind of puts a slightly different spin on things. Oh well, was still a great day to be up there orienteering among the bellbirds, riflemen and pipipi, and views of snowy mountains whenever emerging from the forest. Just need to bottle whatever worked on the spiked controls and throw away whatever was different on #10!

Orienteering (course setting) 1:10:00 [1] *
shoes: Asics Trabuco 2018

Popped into Acheron with Bruce, mainly just to check if the area intended to be used for the white and yellow courses for The Cursed Event was basically as mapped and would be useable for the kiddlies. Was mostly better than expected. So now just have to wait for the decision on whether we are using Acheron... A little bit of additional exploring with other courses in mind but the main thing that slowed us down was dispatching a possum caught in a leghold trap - someone out there was stretching the live-trapping regulations with regards to time to inspect traps

Walking 1:00:00 [1]

Ups and downs in Victoria Park. Actually have no idea how long we were out there for, but let's call it equivalent to an hour's effort.

Run 50:00 [3]
shoes: Asics Trabuco 2018

From work, downriver to past Swanns Bridge, then back upriver to Cashel Mall and back to work. A plod, but a consistent plod - felt like I could have easily gone longer if I had the time...
