Run 38:00 [3]

something special about 38 minutes at the moment? From the office climbing up to the lake domain and a bit of up and down there before cruising back down to the riverside. Feeling better than yesterday (obviously) but apparently the lungs only had about 25 minutes in them. not a problem except for at that stage i was at the wrong end of the cBD. So the haul back to work was a bit of a struggle. Suppose it saved me trying to figure out what to add to make it a 40 minute loop. Calves starting to feel a bit tight at times both running and otherwise, gonna have to watch this...

Note

I think I'm allergic to thursdays. Was looking forward to a run today (maybe slightly masochistically as the legs are still feeling the last hour of tuesday's effort) but well before lunchtime was feeling pretty horrible and snotty and did not get any better through the rest of the day. Much like this time last week.

Walking (fieldwork) 6:00:00 [1]

Trailling work-Jenny around a couple of trap lines through various variants of lovely beech forest in Big Bush. No dead stoats or anything identifiable as a dead rat, but all but a couple of traps were in working order so a nice contrast from my last field trip. It was fairly obvious Jenny has been doing this on an almost daily basis for about a year now while I only get out into the field occasionally at the moment, but it wasn't until the last climb out at the end of the second trap line onto the MTB track that took us down to the pick-up point that I really started to struggle. Had a kaka encounter and heard plenty of small birds, good day.

Then a rushed trip back to Nelson, a bumpy flight to Auckland with my scariest ever landing (and remember I've fown into Wellington more than any other airport), a couple of hours sitting in AK airport while they took about an hour after the original departure time to decide to cancel the flight to Hamilton, then another hour to organise a shuttle, a long drive in a wind-buffeted van, and home before midnight! (just)

Run 38:00 [3]

Can't find my watch but I have ^this number of minutes stuck in my head, so it must have been about that. St Arnaud is a very nice location to go for a run after a day of learning about doing population modelling the "easy" way. From our accom near the DOC office down to West Bay then back around the Peninsula track to Kerr Bay finishing with a climb back up to the house that felt a lot steeper than it looked. A bit of a struggle to get going, maybe because it was a bit colder than what I've been used to of late, and enough loose rock etc on the tracks had to be careful about where my feet were going especially as it got gloomy towards the end, but otherwise a very nice session

Note

Dammit, just when I thought a week was going to go to plan, suddenly feeling a bit poorly. I'm sure once upon a time when I had a cold it only ever hit once at a time, they always seem to come back for a second go these days. Today's run put on hold. :-(

Stationary Bike hills 30:00 [4] 12.3 km (2:26 / km)

Really only had time for half an hour, and didn't see the point in just pedalling along for that short time, so decided to have a bit of a play with the resistence dial. Which it turns out is definitely not purely decorative. 5 mins warming up at the usual setting, 5 mins up a notch, which was noticeably harder but was able to keep around the 25km/h that I'd been warming up, then up one more to the maximum where things got WAY harder. Had planned on 10 minutes, spent most of the first 5 thinking I would have to bail but pushed on through and even started to speed up during the second 5 (from around 20 up to 22km/h). After the 10 minutes of hell, slipped back a level for 5 mins, before going back to the usual setting for what was supposed to be a 5 min warm-down, but actually I enjoyed far too much how effortlessly my speed was suddenly up in the 30's so that I only slowed right down in the last minute or so.

Run 34:40 [3]

I thought this was going to be a tough one, had been thinking of striking out for the lake to get a bit of hill (as much as there is in Tron-central) but after last night's effort was feeling a bit too flat for that. The pun wasn't intentional but I'm keeping it. So went for the Fairfield-Claudelands Bridge loop, and once I got going, seemed to go ok. Coming down River Road into a headwind probably made up for the near lack of climbing, and managed to run through about 4 or 5 "I'm going to take a walking break" moments. Expected I'd go well over 35 mins for this loop today so apparently I'm doing OK. Or have low expectations.

Stationary Bike 1:00:00 [3] 30.0 km (2:00 / km)

Thought I would just be doing a gentle 30-40 minutes, but once I'd spent the first 10 easing into things, just didn't want to stop. (At least when I was ignoring that the butt was feeling a bit sore)

Run 30:00 [3]

A few loops around the gardens with a bit of up and down and sidling, both on and off track. Felt mostly good, though a little more sluggish on some of the up bits than I would have liked, but nothing less than I should expect at this stage of the game

Stationary Bike intervals 8:00 [5]

Stationary Bike intervals 37:00 [3] 21.7 km (1:42 / km)

Was not ready for this apparently, and decided to throw in the towel as I was getting a little too close to having to spend the rest of the afternoon cleaning the carpet

Stationary Bike 45:00 [3] 23.2 km (1:56 / km)

A bit of trouble getting started, then felt like my knee was getting aggravated. So stopped after a few minutes, raised the seat a notch, and wow - it was like I'd turned the resistence down. Shows how much I know about cycling. Funny thing is, Jase who owns this machine, isn't really noticeably shorter (wider, yes) so I'd always figured that how he had it set would suit me. Maybe he spent enough of his youth cruising around on bmx bikes that he's used to that hunched feeling?

Run 33:00 [3]

Down river as far as Fairfield bridge (and a bit further past than I intended as my memory of how the footpaths under and on to the bridge work proved faulty) then up river on the other side to Boundary Road bridge. Then it was time to stop, except I had to carry on just a bit more than my strict 30 mins, as I'd had to wait nearly 25 minutes for a tailwind, so once I finally had it I wanted to make full use of it!

Run 33:00 [3]

Redwoods, Vegas. Lungs almost back to full function, but legs very heavy - the product of about as much sleep as I always get on my Vegas trips. Thankfully had a possom-hound with me, so except for the bits where I had him off the lead in the dog park I had the benefit of a nice tow, with much less sudden stops or crossing back and forth right in front of his human than last time I took him for a run. Otherwise even 20 minutes may have been a struggle.

Run 25:00 [3]

Lungs felt clear enough to get out there and it's an awesome day so couldn't let it go to waste. Down the riverbank as far as Fairfield Stream (or at least the stream that comes out at Fairfield bridge then tried to string some parks together to get me back into the cbd, only some of the park turned out to be bloody golf course so more roadside running than I wanted. Firing on about 2.9 cylinders and foot a bit sore- I probably should have taped it.
