MTBO race 1:15:39 [4] 12.0 km (6:18 / km)

BOSS4 @ Killingworth

Arrived a t tad later than hoped (slept in) and was surprised to see so many cars there already. 84 competitors - wow, best yet.

Had an OK ride with few errors only a couple of in-decisions that cost me any time, and one over the handle bars episode but it was at reasonably slow motion with no injury to either bike or rider.

Decided from the outset that hills to north were too tough for me so went clockwise on the southern section. I think my micro route choices were OK as I did relatively OK compared to many that usually beat me. (see routegadget entry http://garingal.com.au/cgi-bin/gadget3/reitti.cgi?... )

For the most part felt OK breathing was fairly good but then I felt terribly weak when I had to get off bike and push up a couple of steeper sections. I pumped up my tyres a lot harder this event and except for slightly less control I reckon the physical effort was reduced by about 10-20%.

Thanks to AP (that's Mr Power) for setting a course that I could mostly weasle my around the hills rather than have to actually ride up too many. Was fun on the single track even acounting for the extra traffic out there.

PS my distance is only a guess as I forgot my GPS.
....and close to home I was running a bit late so was riding without checking my map. Took a right at a forked intersection rode 30m and worried it might actually turn east away from finish so slammed on brakes to take a quick check of map before proceeding further only find Michael R. running into the back of me. I didn't even suspect he was there. Very low impact and a good test of his brakes as well.

Note

Had a picnic dinner adjacent to Newcastle Ocean Bath with Mapgirl. Quite a nice evening although a heavy sea mist that looked like it should be colder than the nice temperature we were enjoying.

After dinner we walked around the kiddies pool (Mapgirl found a mobile phone which we later handed back to a relieved owner) and then went for a walk along coast and up to the cinema under the stars at KEP. Was not our intent to watch the film - arrived during and walked around the extreme of the large crowd. Couldn't believe how far back some were watching it. Might well have been watching it on a 3 cm screen at arms length. Maybe they were there for the atmosphere rather than the viewing pleasure.

Went back to Baths via the Obelisk.
A good few Km's but not really worth logging as training.

Note

Went to see "Alice in Wonderland" screening in the Maitland Gaol exercise yard.

Mapgirl really enjoyed this evening, the film, the atmosphere, our picnic dinner and my companionship (of course). Me? I found it all OK but had some difficulties.

I bent our new low style beach chair on my first sit in it and hence was uncomfortable all night nd a few mosquito bite right on dusk. The movie was so-so but then again I'm not overly impressed with animated and even mixed live action animated. Johnny Depp is amazing though. Best part of the night was a glorious shooting star that past overhead from right to left. I thought it was a sky rocket somebody had shot over the prison walls as it had the appearance of being low, slow, and wobbling from side to side but it was a shooting star, one of the best I've ever seen. Not sure how many others saw it as it was almost completely overhead and above view of the screen. This made the evening in my book.

Surprised as thought this might rise as last two days haven't exactly starved myself. At this rate I will have lost about 30 kg by Easter. I shall be fast then.

Street Event race 46:30 [3] 5.6 km (8:18 / km)
shoes: Asic Mirage

SSS12 at Kilaben Bay

Didn't read where start was and we were both much later than wanted to be. Had to ask Maria which way to start (sorry Maria if this caused you any time loss)

Felt like crap at work, head not good and totally felt cramped all over my body. I'd swear I had some muscular disease but doc says no. Running always seems to help in this regard so was keen for this arvos event.

First attempted start I hadn't started GPS or even grabed a clue sheet (thanks Angus Beef for pointing that out stopping me running without it) so abandoned and started 10 minutes later.

On recieving map I could not acertain a good route choice and really just bumbelled my way around at a fairly slow pace. Didn't feel good but wasn't completely wrecked like some weeks.

Went up to 1R and then around the streets to 2J as I didn't think the vegetation was crossable. Apparently it was and would have been much better way to go unless like JL (who lives no more than 250m away) you get lost and go to the western dead end section.

Ended up being 2 points late but probably came out 2 points better of than just heading home on time.

Still need a lot of fitness training - been a bit lazy this week and late last week. At least we have a MTBO on Sunday but I need to add something else as well.
