Orienteering 29:24 [3] *** 2.9 km (10:08 / km)
spiked:3/6c

Dalto set two courses at Malmalling and I had a fair deal of troublestaying in touch with the map and kept having to relocate -some times from long away from where I thought I was! Runnign was not too bad but did a partial ankle twist but a few hours later it does not seem too bad.

Good fun and good to get some bush runs in before Easter - will definitelt need to lift my concentration to have any half decent results as the field in M55 is prettystrong with Geoff lawford and Paul Pacque both now in M55.

Orienteering 56:36 [3] *** 5.37 km (10:32 / km)
spiked:8/12c

2nd course at Malmalling - cutt off 2-3-4 as i could not face the slog over the hill and back, good decision as I still took nearly an hour and the legs were well and truely stuffed. Seemed like the bush and rock was very hard going or was it me?

Note

My first Sprint Event

I set the UWA nav Dash Sprint which was the first Sprint Course I had set and it was fun to think a bit different to bush setting. I tried to get a balance between the leg lengths and mix it up with as many turns I could without being too silly and losing legibility for the runners. There was some debate before the race about the length as I posted my time last week when I did a test run and found it was maybe just a few hundred metres too long for the Long Course so I cut it back by about 300m and the winner was just under 16 minutes. Given the target time is 12 -15 minutes I think the distance was about right since whilst Steve is quick I would expect the top Australian runners to beat him by at least a minute and I think it should be set at a National standard. The shorter course was perhaps a couple of hundred metres too long and the winner was 16 minutes but due to a stuff up he was a refuge from the Long course and Simmo was 18 minutes and was 1 minute off the lead in last years National Champs in M60

The detail expected on the map is higher than a Bush map with subtle issues in ISSOM a challenge to make sure narrow paths between buildings and alongside buildings often hard to see, especially for the older age groups. This is not really an issue for bush maps where if there is too much detail the mapper simplifies the area which is not possible for a Sprint map.

I managed to find a new way to screw things up, the maps came back from the printer with what appeared to be two piles, one of 80 Long course maps and one of 40 short course but …. The printer had interleaved Long and Short maps so the first 20 or so runners had a lucky dip and the winners Male and Female on the Short course were expecting to be running the long course but ended up with Short maps and were confused as others they expected to be on their course were running in odd directions! Next time I will check the printer has not set out to confuse me.

Pleasing to have 118 runners and not major problems on the courses, with most comments positive I think I will be back to set another Sprint.

Running 41:35 [3] 8.0 km (5:12 / km)

Regular Kings Park run, much cooler than the last few weeks and a couple of minutes quicker but still a long way off a good time. Ken B races away but not sure if he will in the bush - asked him at the end if it would translate and he said not unless there were signs and paved paths in the bush.

Have to try another morning run and see if that is quicker?
