Warm up

Orienteering 27:11 [4] 4.45 km (6:07 / km)
shoes: Inov8 RocLite 315

Colomendy Green Course

Second ever event there, first I've been to, although was me who first suggested using it. Really rocky and quit physcial in parts of the wood. Made a slight mistake on no.8 which was straightforward but misread the map, lost between 1-2mins. When I realised I'd gone wrong I knew which way the control was in.

Forgot to take my control descriptions as there were none on the map but a aprt from no.5 when there was another control 10m away didn't have a problem. Just had to take a second glance at the map to check I was in the right place.

Felt slow going up the hills, basically start to 2 and 11-15, which I was a bit surprised at. But on the flat bits was feeling quick so maybe all this training is paying off, at least on the flat.

Running 35:00 [2] 6.3 km (5:33 / km)
shoes: Inov8 RocLite 315

Was considering going up Moel Famau but decided I wanted to save something for tomorrow so ran along to Big Covert, which is for sale, hopefully the new land owner won't chop it all down or stop us using it for orienteering as its probaly the best area DEE have got.

Also a sign from the police saying tripwires had been found on the footpaths leading from Maeshafn (village next door), they thought to stop bikes. Though I reckon they would cause more harm to runners...

Anyway was careful and jogged around for a bit, on the way out again saw something which looked a bit like the end of a tripwire wrapped around the bottom of a large tree.

Walked a bit on the way back as left hamstring started feeling a bit tight again.

Running 50:00 [3] 10.5 km (4:46 / km)
shoes: Inov8 RocLite 315

Steady run up the valley. was considering intervals but in th dark on a field muddier than normal wasn't needed.

Ran higher up than usual, to the next convenient turn which just happens to add an extra k in total. Only problem was left hamstring was tight on the way back so took short route back from the park.

Just passed over the 5.5k road when I heard a huge bang behind me. Decided to be nosy and ran back up to see a car speeding away and a lampost across the road further up, just after the corner. At that point I could see a line of cars desceding the hill before the corner. They just managed to break in time before hitting it (they couldn't swerve round it as cars were going up the hill in the unaffected lane). I thought someone would get out and try moving something that someone else was bound to hit but nobody did, just mearly waited until they could drive round it. Anyway I wasn't going to do anything as no doubt someone would have tried to run me down, and to be far it would have taken more than one person to lift it.

Running 23:30 [3] 4.2 km (5:36 / km)
shoes: Inov8 RocLite 315

jog across to bigham

Running 32:00 [5] 5.6 km (5:43 / km) +290m 4:32 / km
shoes: Inov8 RocLite 315

Same hill intervals as 2 weeks ago, 80% followed by a sprint up half the hill. Tom came with as he couldn't go on the long run.

More breaks today than last time. 30secs after each rep, which seemed to fly by and then a 2 min break after the first 4.

Not quite as tough as last time but don't get me wrong this is still a really tough seesion. Was ahead of tom most of the time but he was feeling tired.

Preferred doing it in the light, as other times its been dark, as you can see the hole and lumps before you hit them so didn't affect momentum as much. Mud was a problem near to the path and was also leaning too far forward near to the top.

Running 1:06:00 [4] 15.0 km (4:24 / km) +400m 3:53 / km
shoes: Inov8 RocLite 315

As the legs have been feeling tired this week decided on a shorter long run but at a higher intensity. Went the shorter way to and from endcliffe park then up the valley round Cannings and back. Was racing some bikes up from wire dam. Overtook them at the stop of the steep slope then they overtook me on the slope down the other side then I retook them after the road crossing and that was the end of them. Rested near to where you rejoin the path down after the loop, road at the top of the wood and the white style. Took about 4 mins of rest in total.

Got to the white style in about 32mins, i think. Passed a land rover just after I turned the corner on the track heading home. Did the last 5k, from the bottom of the steep slope back to the flat in sub 18mins, was pushing it but still ran within myself. Felt better in the last 5k than the first 10k. Admitely most of it was slightly downhill but the last 750m was uphill.

Stretching 5:00 [1]

After I got back.

Running 35:00 [3] 7.0 km (5:00 / km)
shoes: Inov8 RocLite 315

Run down to Endcliffe park the short way for some oing with SYO then ran up the valley after and back up the short way.

Orienteering 9:00 [5] 2.2 km (4:05 / km)
shoes: Inov8 RocLite 315

Map Memory course to start off with, prettty easy as I seem to spend a lot of time in that park.

Timing were to nearest minute I think. Pin-punching, maybe with SI I would have got sub 4min/k.

Orienteering 10:00 [5] 2.3 km (4:21 / km)
shoes: Inov8 RocLite 315

Then did the light green. A bit more tired for this, and had to run up and down the really steep slope in the East of the park which took a little time.

Distances: Straight line, would have been hardly any deviation from the straight line anyway.

Friday Jan 23, 2009 #

Running 15:00 [2] 3.0 km (5:00 / km)

Gym 1:00:00 [3]

12.5mins on reclining bike to start off. Thought this would be easier than the normal bikes as normal bike's seat seems to tilt forwards when it would be better if it was level or slightly bacwards. Anyway it was slightly different on the legs.

chest press 25kg x 10 and 20kg x 10 x 2

vertical traction 30kg x 12 x 2

leg press 30kg x 12 on each leg

hip flexes 22.5kg x 12 twice on each leg (approx)

some ab strength on the ball

17.5mins on bike to end, first 5mins high intensity

Tag thing seems to be more of a hinderance than a help. Maybe I'm just not doing it right but on leg press it didn't even register the tag was in there until the third attempt at putting it in and pressing some random buttons. It also deos wierd things with the bike, all I want to do is cycle until I get bored or tired but it sets times then cuts off after the allotted time and takes a minute or two till I can start again. Maybe next time I'll ask someone whats going on, or what I'm doing wrong.

Said i cycled more than when I was in the gym the last time of 2008. But sure I spent more time on it today, amybe it wasn't counting the reclined bike? not like it matters that much.

Stretching 5:00 [1]

Got a bit lazy with this, need to try and lengthen the hamstrings.

Strength 5:00 [1]

Table Tennis 1:00:00 [1]

Played a bit of TT at Stephenson before I went to the gym. Some running was required in 'round the tabel' and also getting the ball from the other end of the hall.

Running 35:00 [3] 8.0 km (4:23 / km)

Am still feeling tired from last week, especially up through the parks. Managed about 18mins out with approx 17mins return. Hopefully will be able to manage something a bit longer on saturday.

Running 22:00 [2] 4.5 km (4:53 / km)
shoes: Inov8 RocLite 315

Thought TASS session was tomorrow but was actually today so missed it. Was annoyed so decided i'd get out for some hill reps. feeling a little less tired today.

gentle jog around, was icy on the bingham hill sprints I do so jogged back to endcliffe to do them in the wood.

Running 15:00 [5] 3.0 km (5:00 / km)
shoes: Inov8 RocLite 315

Started down by the water and finished up by the holly bush on the path at the top. About 150m with 20m climb, small path which was a bit muddy nearer the bottom. About 3/4 of the way up is the steepest part which was a killer on the later reps.

Approx 35-40 secs per rep. Jog back down roughly the same. Had a longer rest after rep 5 (1-2mins). Had to have an extra 30secs after 7/8 and walked most of the way down after 9. Almost gave up after 8 pushed through the pain.

Might have started a bit further up the slope if i'd realised it was 150m.

Running 40:00 [3] 9.0 km (4:27 / km)
shoes: Inov8 RocLite 315

Started off slow which wasn't a surprise but got better as I went along. Somehow managed to forget watch, but looked inside a car at the top end to time the way back.

Detoured on the way back in the woods up to the allotments then ran almost back down and up through Bingley coming out just above the tennis courts. Adds approx 75m climb onto normal 8k run.

Running 2:27:00 [3] 27.5 km (5:21 / km) +950m 4:33 / km
shoes: Inov8 RocLite 315

Long run with dave and tom. Dave turned back at Cannings then we followed the Tigger Tor fell race route, the only part we missed out was the run up/down to the rugby club. Parts were terrain running across the heather/bracken/woods but most was on paths. Thought it was going to be at least 30k but proved wrong.

Surprisingly nothing really hurt, just tired running up some of the hills near the end of Burbage part.

Had quite a few breaks to check the checkpoints out and have some food. Good job I bought a camelbak the other day for food and water.

Up porters brook, feeling tired today.

Running 23:00 [2] 4.0 km (5:45 / km)
shoes: Inov8 RocLite 315

Decided for some strange reason that I wanted to go and do the hill reps in Bingham with some Shuocers even though I've already been out today and tired. But somehow came to the conclusion that if I go out again I can have a rest from running tomorrow...

Run to and from hills.

Running 30:00 [5] 5.0 km (6:00 / km)
shoes: Inov8 RocLite 315

Same as we did at end of October, tuesday before calf problem.

Think I managed the first 4 just about then jogged up to the trees on the 5th and did the sprint, then did another proper one, part of one and a full one at the end. When I say full I mean I wasn't getting as close to the front on the 80% ones as last time but i make the excuse about already running today. Sprints were all pretty good though. On one of the jogs down I could see loads of blue lights down in Sheffield below, and decided that it was probably time for a mini break as there was only one real blue light and I was imagining things.

Loads harder than I remember, really felt like giving up all the way through. On the warm up on the way there I could feel the huge amount of food I had for lunch and thought then it was going to be a struggle. Basically meant I felt sick for quite a bit.

Going to try and do this more often over the next few weeks.

Stopped on the way back to do some intervals. intensity 2 after them for about 1.2k

Running 8:00 [4] 1.95 km (4:06 / km)

Remeasured the interval lap on the fields to find out it is about 650m and not 700.

Ran three complete laps, ie not time based as I normally do.

Wasn't feeling all that good and on last lap the mid part was a bit slow so but max effort into the last 200m.

Dad was plannng some junior training down at Little Budworth so decided to go and do some orienteering and terrain running. Short warm up.

Orienteering 30:00 [3] 4.0 km (7:30 / km)
shoes: Inov8 RocLite 315

Lots of shorter legs. Stopped evry now and agian to have a look at stuff and the inaccuracies on the map. Tried to use compass on most legs to get some practice at taking bearings.

Running 25:00 [3] 4.2 km (5:57 / km)
shoes: Inov8 RocLite 315

After the o did another loop, quite a bit of it in terrain. Tried to run in the deepest heather but as its so uneven and only about a foot deep at its tallest it wasn't that demanding. Will have to do some proper heather running on Burbage when i get back to Sheffield.

On the way out decided to make a 10k loop out of it. Haven't done it for a while as theres quite a bit of tarmac running, the grass on the sides is shorter though at this time of year so could go on the verges quite a bit.

Along canal then back through the zoo, upton and back across the fields.

Lots of niggles today. Every so often flet the calf from yesterday, right ankle wasn't feeling any support from arch support so was hurting and about 5k in left hamstring felt tight.
Hadn't done any intervals since mega calf injury and decided I needed to start somewhere so stopped on the fields on the way back.

Running intervals 8:15 [4] 2.1 km (3:56 / km)
shoes: Inov8 RocLite 315

700m loop like in september.

3*2minute intervals basically got me to within 10m of the lap each time, so simliar to september in pace, but ice meant I wasn't pushing as hard and took it steady round the 2 corners. Surprisingly nothing hurt while intervalling.

45secs rest

Was doing some mapping in Cuddington so went to delamere for a run on the way back. Was really icy so couldn't run at the speed I wanted. Calf seemed ok, slight problem near the beginning but after that was fine. Ran up Old Pale, on way down must have overstretched as left hamstring was a little sore for the rest of the run.

Was about 100m from end and wasn't paying attention going over a mound and fell bashing thy left shin. Groaned for a bit then ran a bit further than I was intedning on to make sure it was ok.

Were two mini accidents in street just after I left, as it hadn't been gritted and it was just sheet ice. Also a problem when its all on a v slight hill.

Nearly didn't bother going to Lyme Park as calf was still feeling a bit sore. Think the problem was due to the skin on my heel cracking and being quite painful so not walking properly so stresses going through parts of the calf in different ways.
Anyhoo decided to bother going and did a long warm up, started off really slow and did lots of stretching and slowly it decided to loosen of enough so I could run.

Orienteering 54:35 [3] 9.3 km (5:52 / km)

Lyme Park - John O-Goats charity event

Straight Line total distance was 10k, but I got to miss out 3 controls for being an M20, so was probably about 8k straight. About 9.2k in total.

Missed out no. 14, 18 and 19. Kept on changing my mind out there which ones I was going to skip but probably missed the right ones out.

Wasn't running flat out, so not to annoy calf. Felt it a couple of times out there, especially up the steeper hills and over the tussachs.
Walked in some of the tussachs, between 5-6-7 and 11-12, which was also up hill.

Also lost 1-2mins between 9 to 8 as there was a continous stream of people coming over the large style. Was just about to try and push my way over when a gap appeared.

Note

Decided this year I'm going to add distance run during orienteering rather than straight line distance, but will also record straight line in notes.

Wasn't pushing that hard and was really icy on the roads. Running down the drive at the end had a niggle in left calf, so just walked it.

Walking 1:00:00 [3]

Not much walking.

Went to Low/High Rigg and found the pond more frozen that angle tarn. Occassionly when too many people stood too close together there was a large crack and also when someone fell over onto it, but we remained dry.

Got to the top of Low Rigg but didn;t make it to the top of High Rigg as the frozen pond was too much of a temptation.
