swim/row race (slow moving flat river) 30:00 [4] 2.5 mi (12:00 / mi)

(estimating paddle time)

Greenway Challenge!
sort of a sprint adventure race.... no nav. solo or relay. i did the solo. the women's field was stacked - patricia williams-smith came down and handily won (yeah patsy!) a few other top regional racers showed up as well. i got 5th (won money! will use to buy new sunglasses i lost during the paddle. :( i placed about where i thought i would. i knew 4th place and i would be close (less than 1.5 minutes)... no one snuck by that shouldn't have. so a good day! f'ing hot out though. not quite used to the heat yet. can't wait for the poison ivy to rear it's head - the bushwack was like a carpet of the stuff.

i was hoping to catch a ride during the afternoon, as the race was shorter than i expected. but i ended up helping break down the tents and bike racks, then mowed the lawn at home, and by then the heat wore me down so much i wasn't worth anything.

cycling race (mtn bike) 30:00 [5] 5.0 mi (6:00 / mi)

estimated time & distance

doubletrack, gravel, singletrack. some cross barriers to go over - i had the edge here for sure!

running race (trail) 39:00 [4] 4.0 mi (9:45 / mi)
shoes: Velocity 1

estimated time & distance

trail, gravel, bushwack
was cramping in my torso for a bit. weird. nearly had me doubled over. had my weird heart palpitation thing right before getting to the paddle. was thankful i didn't have to try running anymore. didn't last long.

Friday May 30, 2008 #

Note
(rest day)

i was still pretty sore today, so i took it off and did some good stretching work in hopes of being able to move during the race tomorrow.

strength (ATW) 25 [1]

ATW for 30
time: 23.37
then did some more crunches

yoga (at home) 30:00 [1]

ok, supposed to do bikes on hills tonight ... but everytime i stood up today my legs ached! damn squats... and maybe tuesday's killer ride. i decided not to cause them further pain (afterall, a short race on saturday), so i did some yoga today. concentrated on hips - wow they are tight.

swim/row (flatwater paddle) 1:02:00 [2] 3.6 mi (17:13 / mi)

since there will be a 2-3 mile paddle in saturday's race, i figured i should paddle once in the boat i was going to race. ok, and i haven't paddled since OME in september :) it felt pretty good.. except trying to carry the boat back to my car. i couldn't. my shoulders and triceps were worked over yesterday! there is a short portage in the race.... this will be interesting...

yoga (at home) 23:00 [1]

misc poses

strength (crossfit angie) 23:30 [3]

pullup, pushup, situp, squat.
was down for 100x, but only eeked out 75. i was worked over! the first 50 pushups were there, albeit deteriorating in form. the last 25 were on my knees and i could still barely keep myself together.

running (trail) 1:08:00 [3] 7.0 mi (9:43 / mi) +114m 9:15 / mi
shoes: Velocity 1

lookout mtn.

the group trail run turned into only moi. i had a good run though! stayed on the guild trail for an out & back. kept the pace easy, but picked it up slightly on the way back. felt good despite the godawful humidity and heat. luckily it started raining near the end which was quite refreshing. legs feeling worked over tonight - last night's speed session definitely creeping in.

cycling (road) 1:26:00 [4] 28.3 mi (3:02 / mi) +139m 3:00 / mi

tues night ride....
full loop minus the climb

started with the main pack. goal was to see how long i would last, hopefully longer than last time. got up to the turn from mountain creek to browntown... a sketchy steep short climb to a fairly blind turn. the pack was going, so it seemed safe. i saw a car patiently waiting, so i kept going. the 2 guys in front of me thought otherwise. yikes! wrong gear on this climb. talk about slow motion. i put everything into it and somehow didn't tip. then the 2 dufuses that stopped, went forward, then crashed into eachother and fell. haha. luckily didn't take me out. (and they were ok). but damn, i lost the pack. i pedaled about 10 min then some guy zipped by me. i hopped on that train and we hung the entire time. he was strong but i held on. caught up to a few of his friends, but eventually dropped them. finally we got to talk a little. he asked me what team i was on, because if i wasn't i should be. :)

it was a great ride, the fastest time ever on this loop. my legs did start to go around 1:10, but i did what i could and hopefully didn't slow much.

and ironically, i stopped my watch at exactly the time you put on my sheet. not an even 1:25, but 1:26. (where did you come up with that anyways??)

Monday May 26, 2008 #

cycling (road) 1:09 [2] 18.0 mi (4 / mi) +105m 4 / mi

recovery ride. easy. downtown/bend loop.

Sunday May 25, 2008 #

cycling long (mtn) 4:40:00 [3] 54.0 mi (5:11 / mi) +1219m 4:51 / mi

kimsey mtn loop from gee creek campground

great ride! some discrepancy on elevation - zeke thought 5500, my watch was more like 3400. no idea how accurate mine is. he is super familiar with the terrain...

i think i've found some new training partners! zeke is a stud 60year old, with experience at leadville, la ruta, etc. he rides a lot and basically said whenever i want to, just let him know. woohoo! i was a bit nervous with today's ride, as it was my first time riding with him - and he brought 2 other guys too. awesome riders. luckily i think i held my own. definitely slower, but great comments and was at least told i didn't slow them down. my legs felt good, as did the rest of my body. nutrition was fine. drank a lot of water - 110oz! (total elapsed time was about 5.5 due to changing a few flats, talking with fisherman & horseback riders). the hottest day of the year so far - mid 80s. i was dripping.

finished off the day with a dip in the frigid hiawassee river. quite refreshing!

Saturday May 24, 2008 #

cycling (road) 1:00:00 [2] 15.0 mi (4:00 / mi)

volunteered at the marathon most of the day (6:30-3!) then got in a quick road ride. loops around the reservoir at raccoon was a great place for these drills. took 1 foot off the pedal and practiced my stroke. was surprised to see how inefficient my left foot is! definitely not near the smoothness of my right. i need to def work on this in the future.

Friday May 23, 2008 #

Note
(rest day)

spoke tonight at Rock/Creek on behalf of Vasque for the Scenic Cit Trail Marathon. a great turnout and a successful talk! luckily people watched the slideshow and my prepared topic points went by smoothly :)

Thursday May 22, 2008 #

cycling intervals (road) 2:02:00 [4] 32.5 mi (3:45 / mi) +239m 3:40 / mi

the plan: 25 minutes threshold work, followed by a 10 min recover. i really didn't know where to do these, so instead of being bored at the bend going back and forth, i'd see what it would be like on a real ride. headed to the tues night loop. it was interesting to really push it hard for that long , esp on areas that i normally wouldn't work so hard. it was a tough night! was beat after. still felt my legs a bit from the hills on tuesday.

Wednesday May 21, 2008 #

cycling (mtn) 45:00 [3] 8.0 mi (5:37 / mi)

at raccoon. had planned on riding before and after the run (even left work an hour early!) .... but only got the before in. stomach was bothering me ever since lunch. i think the run rattled it too much and all i could think about was going home. dang.

guessed distance.

running (trail) 1:00:00 [3] 7.0 mi (8:34 / mi)
shoes: Velocity 1

easy pace run. felt good at first till the tummy set in. but even after that, the legs felt good and that's what matters more.

on another note, the groin felt a bit tight after swimming. couldn't figure out what it was, but must have been the breast stroke kick that wacked it weird.

Tuesday May 20, 2008 #

cycling hills (road) 49:00 [4] 8.7 mi (5:38 / mi) +314m 5:04 / mi

12 min warm up.
climb up s. crestwood. (7min)
up foltz 3 times. (5 min each)
then up n. crestwood going home. (4min)

time was a bit short; could have snuck in 1 more on foltz. i think i was impressed that i got pretty darn close to the same point each time up foltz. yeah, it was burning lots, but wasn't impossible. i remember doing it twice awhile back and thought i was going to keel over. i've improved! the roads were wet so going down was anything but zippy.

strength (core) 10:00 [1]

cheryls planks

2 sets, 1 min each (2nd set was maybe closer to 45 sec each. couldn't quite hold 'em!)

push up plank
side elbow plank
reverse plank (i suck at this one!)
side elbow plank
regular plank

Monday May 19, 2008 #

yoga (yoga) 22:00 [1]

yoga at home.
+ some crunches

cycling (road) 49:00 [2] 12.5 mi (3:55 / mi) +63m 3:52 / mi

ride thru the hood.
very easy pace. legs felt pretty good.

swim/row (swim laps) 20:00 [2]

25m pool. who knows how many laps. boredom erases them from my mind.

gosh, i really don't care for swimming much. inside is worse; maybe once it's warmer in the river that will be better (had "fun" doing that last summer with the tri people). a 25m pool is just soooo repetitive. it's been months since i've been in a pool - i feel so uncoordinated!
oh, and def not ready for bathing suit season. yucko! :P

Sunday May 18, 2008 #

cycling long (road) 3:54:00 [3] 55.0 mi (4:15 / mi) +566m 4:07 / mi

route: over lookout mtn, thru the valley to trenton, up 136 (climb lookout), down 136, north on 192, then some random route back.
mileage = approximation
elevation gain: i guess that's right but i swear it felt like more.

last minute road ride with noah and jeramie - a bit of swifter pace than my originally planned ride with kristi. it went well though! it's nice to hear kudos from the guys on how i've improved. (i'm always worried about holding people back on their rides; i'm now assured that i can hang with them fine. yeah! now to get the climb/descents better.... they do get an adequate feed time waiting for me there). luckily the rain held off till the last 45min. i felt good during, but am whooped now!

Saturday May 17, 2008 #

running race (race, road) 6:33 [5] 1.0 mi (6:33 / mi)

snuck in a 1-mile race today. just curious as to what i could do....
6:33! a record for me! 1st age group. also think this sets a new state record for my age (for some reason it was 7:39 previously, whereas the 32 & 34 year olds are sub-6. my bday happened just in time!)

running warm up/down (road) 20:00 [1] 2.0 mi (10:00 / mi)

cycling (mtn bike) 2:31:00 [3] +651m

location: prentice cooper wma.
i have no clue on distance! will try to break out a map and figure out an estimate.

went up to hang with the people doing the ultra o-gaine (orienteering event). since 12 hrs on my feet isn't on the leadville plan, i took my bike up to ride around. wasn't sure where to go yet - i'm only really familiar with haley road, which is heinous. not fun. wait, that sounds like what i need. something nasty to persevere through. so i did. yeah, i hate it just as much as i did before :)

Friday May 16, 2008 #

Note
(rest day)

rest day! took it easy.

Thursday May 15, 2008 #

cycling (spin bike) 2:00:00 [3]

solid 2 hrs on the spin bike.
thought i had my heart rate monitor with me, but forgot strap! while the spin class i sat in on for part of the time sucked (the teachers here really cater to the couch potato it seems), a fellow cyclist was in there and we kept the pace up.

strength (core) 31:00 [1]

ATW for 30 reps. 24:10.

set of 3 planks for 30sec.
couldn't eek out 5... my back/form started to go. think i need to get these in at least twice a week to keep things up.

Wednesday May 14, 2008 #

running (road) 46:00 [2] 5.3 mi (8:41 / mi) +51m 8:26 / mi

a quick run in the hood...
after overdoing last week's run, i wanted to do something shorter to make sure all my parts were ready (as i payed the price last thurs). good news! the run felt fine and i'm still feeling ok a few hours later. i'm taking this as a good sign and will start building up again.

Tuesday May 13, 2008 #

yoga (yoga at home) 25:00 [1]

yoga poses
(plus some additional stretching. threw in some crunches.)

cycling (road) 1:57:00 [3] 36.0 mi (3:15 / mi) +595m 3:05 / mi

red bank loop + climb

started with the main pack. wow! lasted about 15 minutes. gave up after 3 min of chasing. well, it's a start... ;) first half of the ride was a solid 4 effort, but tried to not go over the edge. after the climb it was a bit more mellow (ok, because i was riding by myself then). last 10 min picked up some guys and pacelined it back for a good finish.

i think my fastest time on the loop!

legs felt good for a change. yeah! the last few road rides just felt off, so i'm glad to be back.

Sunday May 11, 2008 #

cycling (mtn bike) 2:22:00 [3] 12.0 mi (11:50 / mi)

raccoon mtn loop

so today is my real birthday and so i went out for a real birthday ride with real friends. had fun, my mind was in it, and i was actually riding decently. the 40+ mph wind gusts kept it interesting. we hauled ass when we heard a big crack. luckily only hit by small pieces of flying debris.

Saturday May 10, 2008 #

cycling (mtn bike) 3:35:00 [2] 25.0 mi (8:36 / mi)

raccoon mtn

this was the anti-birthday ride. even though i posted on the msg board that i had a baby shower from 10-12 and would be riding at 1pm, they decided to ride at 10am. wtf. so when i caught wind of this, i was pretty much miss cranky pants for the rest of the day. 1 friend had kept to my schedule and was sweet to ride with me even though i had the worst attitude (which translated into a less than stellar ride. no skillz.)

Thursday May 8, 2008 #

strength (core) 36:00 [1]

ATW for 30 reps (did not do plank leg lifts - hurt the injury. boooo.....)

then 3 sets of planks (normal + both sides, for 30 sec each. 15 sec rest inbetween)

Wednesday May 7, 2008 #

running (trail run) 1:36:00 [2] 8.0 mi (12:00 / mi) +213m 11:05 / mi
shoes: Velocity 1

(guess on miles)

first run in 3 weeks, not counting the 14 minute one. i think i overcommitted on the there-and-back course. feeling pretty ok the first half; it caught up to me on the way back. walked a few hills as the groin was tight. not painful, just not right. the hammies were actually feeling almost normal!

Tuesday May 6, 2008 #

cycling (road) 1:33:00 [2] 25.0 mi (3:43 / mi) +152m 3:39 / mi

tues night ride....
or attempt at one. my hammies are STILL sore, stiff, tight, etc. i went out there, but really couldn't even try to keep up with anyone. in fact, i really didn't want to be out there it was so not feeling good = not fun. but, i persevered.

yoga (at home) 25:00 [1]

yoga. stiff. not easy. form off. but in general, i felt good and much better when i finished than when i started.

Monday May 5, 2008 #

Note
(rest day)

f'ing sore. my god. my hammies haven't hurt like this since i don't know when. i wasn't half this sore after Cohutta. or the last few ARs i did last year.

and the sunburn. guess i didn't realize how bad it was until i saw people's faces at work. yeah, not good. my fair skin + sun = bad times. and i'm usually so good with sunscreen too. disappointed with myself. now, to find a cabana boy to rub lotion on me 24/7....

Sunday May 4, 2008 #

cycling (road) 1:47:00 [2] 27.0 mi (3:58 / mi)

easy recovery ride, red bank loop.

but wow, my legs (whole body!) is more sore than i anticipated.
bad move not putting on sunscreen earlier when gardening. between the soreness of riding and weeding + the sunburn, tomorrow will be rough!

Saturday May 3, 2008 #

cycling race (mtn bike race!) 6:35:00 [4] 61.0 mi (6:29 / mi) +533m 6:18 / mi

Dirty Spokes 6h race!
Fort Yargo, Winder GA

5 laps... 5th place (out of 10) in the womens open. (i know at least 2 of the women ahead race expert xc. but on the bright side, no one made it to 6 laps!)

Lap #1: bottle cage broke and clanged around for 1 very annoying hour.

Lap #4: rear brake lever breaks; unfixable. ride this lap + 1 more with no rear brakes... luckily this course doesn't have any big descents, so i was able to deal. (carefully.)

i'm actually pretty damn sore today. the course was hard packed and pretty rough - my arms, chest & back got worked over. legs feel great though :)

things to do:
- new shoes. my toes hurt like hell for some reason, so i'm blaming old shoes. i will not do another long ride in what i have.
- resolve the brakes. magura sent me the fixer part before; they better send me a whole new brake this time. no need for this to have happened twice to the same one now!
- food & hydration good, but i wish i went with a small camelbak instead of bottles. with 98% singletrack, it was too hard to find good spots to drink. and i failed to bring good food to eat after the race.

Friday May 2, 2008 #

Note
(rest day)

rest day, but not planned... wasn't sure if i was driving down to the race today or in the morning... with rain coming, i drove down fri night, so i was not able to get a ride in.

Thursday May 1, 2008 #

cycling (road) 1:35:00 [2] 20.5 mi (4:38 / mi) +198m 4:30 / mi

easy road ride. stopped at the rod dixon run and watched the crazies chug beers & run.
