OMM, Langdale, Medium Score, Day 2 with Kenny Short.
"A game of two halves!"
What a difference from Day 1 - clear blue skies and very little wind. It was quite cool at our 7.12 start but soon warmed up and got very warm if you were in shelter and in the sun. It made the navigation so much easier not surprisingly - but also made running a lot easier as you could look ahead and pick better lines through the terrain. The first two controls were on the top of Hard Knott so we started with a 1.7km road run up Hard Knott pass - Kenny reckoned it is the steepest pass in the Lake District, it certainly felt like it. We had an unscheduled stop on the road to un-pack the tent soKenny could retrieve his glasses - doh! After the first two we bannaned a bit to the next one - on a very picturesque stone arched bridge in the Esk valley - to try and get an easier descent down the steep slope, not sure if it was worth it. Next three controls were along the side of Great Moss in the shadow of Scafell and Scafell Pike - the scenery here was stunning! - and it was great to bump into Rob Cranston who was marshalling at one of them. Next we headed SE to another quaint control on a ruined house in Yeastyrigg Gill - we had climbed to stay above Greenhole Crags which resulted in a bit of a descent into the control. From here we headed north to a control on Charnley Crag Cairn - it would have been tricky in the clag as there were several tops enroute. Then it was on over (we didn't fancy going round) Esk Pike past Esk Hause to a control on a wee hill overlooking Sprinkling Tarn. At this point we still had an hour and a quarter left so felt ambitious enough to go for a loop of controls around Langdale Comb. This first involved a descent from Esk Hause to Angle tarn - the reverse of the Langdale Horseshoe route we had run two weeks previously - and then a contour along the slopes of Rossett Pike into Stake Pass, picking up a control on a wee craggy hill on the way. At the next control on a stream junction on the upper reaches of Stake Beck we had 32 mins left on the clock - Kenny was keeping track of the time and setting a hard pace. I was starting to struggle and despite stuffing down several jelly babies and gels was getting a bit of blurred vision. Next one was on a wee hill on the edge of Marcrag Moor- 23 mins left. The 350m, almost vertical, descent to the last control was tricky with double vision! 9m 26s left! We did the last 1.9km on the track to the finish in 9.45 - 19s late so only 2 points lost. I was pooped!
We had the third highest score on the day, pulled up to 4tho/a and won the Vets Handicap.
A memorable weekend :-)
