Note

Much driving and a walk round Bruges in the evening.

Mtn Bike 1:16:00 [3] 15.6 km (4:52 / km) +324m 4:25 / km

With T round local villages on another blazing hot day. Lovely scenery and not too tired after mornings run. No cafes about for coffee or beer though unfortunately.
7 AM

Road Running 1:57:47 [3] 22.05 km (5:20 / km) +315m 4:59 / km
shoes: Hoka Red

Needed a long one as playing catch-up for Berlin in September. Hence crammed this in before travelling. Went for an early start and on local quiet roads to avoid the 30 degree heat later.
On the back roads to Sangiou which involved a steady but gradual climb then looped back to Champagne-en-Valromey on the lower road with a steep climb at the end.
All good and done by 9am just needed to be a bit careful on the steep road camber. Nice French villages.

Orienteering race 43:00 [4]
shoes: Mudclaws RED

OOCup Race 5

I could do it today. That's because it was easy...or mostly anyway. Still managed to significantly confuse myself once. Should have, could have, might have been top three today :-) 9th. Enjoyable.

Very plaasant meal after with S and PS and TakS.

OO Cup Race 4
Me and my big mouth.
Too difficult.
Or at least it's tough when you can't tell whether a slab of rock is mapped as a crag, a boulder, a knoll, even a spur, or just rocky ground, on the map. It's also tough when you have a blue magnetic north line running straight through the centre of a control circle.
A mass of rock at #1. Looking for a knoll. Got my codes confused :-) Race well and truly cooked even though I visited the right control fairly quickly.
#7 magnetic north line confusing the issue amongst said rock.
Oh dear.
I need a lot of practice in this sort of stuff where you can have a control on a mapped nondescript pile of not a lot and then have masses of unmapped rock

Orienteering race 1:02:00 [4]
shoes: Mudclaws RED

OOCup Race 3
Big missed opportunity.
Lovely area...
Beautifully through the first 5 in the technical bit but missed 6 amongst the real rocky intricate stuff and had to bale to the path drinks station. Flow interruptef and proceeded to make two more significant errors...but compounded it with a third at 12...a spur on a white hillside. Trouble was there was unmapped rock all round so didn't believe it could be it. Thoroughly confused. Game over.

Bit of a shame as really loved the area and really felt I could do
something. .O as it should be. A real mix of route choice and fine nav amongst really complicated rocky stuff. A really fun day. Here's hoping for more tomorrow.

Funnily enough it also gave me some confidence that I could keep up with the real top guys through the techy stuff at the beginning. Lapses in focus need eliminating though.

Fitness levels feel really good for this stage of a multi day. Don't feel in need of any sort of rest day...just looking forward to tomorrow which looks like being a wet one....first one since we left.

OOCup is once again proving to be a great choice. Lovely size of event and great terrain ....not to mention the weather of course. Just the ticket.

Orienteering race 47:00 [4]
shoes: Mudclaws RED

OOCup Race 2
Much better.
Technically more challenging but a lot of paths too. Took it steadily and pleasingly clean...although overshot 4 (2 mins) and mistook reentrants at 8 (2 mins) . Probably 6 mins of errors which I'll take in this place. 7th when I left. Enjoyable.

Ended 7tjh but 10 mins down on LL.

Orienteering race 1:29:00 [4]
shoes: Mudclaws RED

OOCup Day 1
Misinterpreted the contours completely out of the start and things got steadily worse from then on. Couldn't make much fit until 7 by which time I'd made more big errors than I usually do in a year....and I mean huge. At that point i was hating the whole experience and I'd have happily jacked it in but gave myself a talking to and started again.
From that point on things went reasonably ok, and by 18 i was almost enjoying it. Only almost though.

What I like about multi days is that you soon have a chance to have another go..not that I wanted to early on today. Start again tomorrow.....32 degrees?

I still caught up my 2 mins man at 7..…amazing.

Baking day and having done a fair bit of biking earlier in the day very wary about doing anything too long but fancied a shot at round the Bleiloch Talspeere lake.
Set off cautiously and took a fair bit of water but turned out to be very straightforward. Very scenic. About 28 degrees.

Orienteering race 1:08:00 [5] 9.3 km (7:19 / km) +116m 6:53 / km
shoes: Saucony Progrid (Orange)

WMOC Long - Grib Skov - A Final

Early starter so perhaps a mite cooler but no nice tracks in the brackeny or long grassy bits. It was still very hot anyway.

Lost 2 mins+ at 2 misreading ride ends in the brackeny clearing, and a lesser amount at 7 and 13.

Ran out of steam in the heat over the last km or two but held it together albeit running slower.

56th and 5th Brit behind Dixie, (60), JohnE (63), JamesC (64), and Keith T (67). Probably the est I could have hoped for after a topsy turvy week but it would have been nice to make the top 50.

Didn't have the confidence or terrain experience to run straight on enough occasions...apart from not being quick enough.

Westlund and Lund at the sharp end are so quick....but that guy from Scotland with the fastest run in split took 4 and 8 secs out of them respectively :-)

Orienteering warm up/down 10:00 [3]

Pre final

Note

Another smashing sea swim...this time back.in the Baltic.

Mtn Bike 1:00:00 [3]

WMOC rest day.
Gentle pottering from Gilleleje to Hornbaek and back beside the Kattegat with T. Various stops for swims, coffee, ice cream etc...any excuse in fact. Lovely day, beautiful warm water. Out for a good while ...20ks worth.

Orienteering race (Wmoc Middle Final) 33:00 [5] 3.9 km (8:28 / km)
shoes: Mudclaws RED

C Final after qualifier debacle. 2nd.
Aim was just to be asclean as possible without worrying about anything else. Unfortunately missed the depression in light green that was #1 and binned over two minutes so a poor start. Hence really pleased to pull things back from there to get up to 2nd and hence secure one of the two C final wildcard places for Friday's long A final. Well pleased. Not a clean run by any means but I'll take it after such an up and down week.
Looking forward to that now after rest day tomorrow.

Warm up/down 10:00 [3]

Pre o

Note

Nice swim in the Kattegat ...in a rare rain shower.

Orienteering race 1:02:00 [5]
shoes: Mudclaws RED

Wmoc - Forest Qualifier
Blew it big time at 12....in the green stuff. Tried to be calm and went in and out three times but missed it each time. Then became headless chicken.
Also lost time at 5 and 10....maybe 3 mins. Shame after a good steady start.

Note

Lovely swim in the Kattegat

Warm up/down 25:00 [3]

Copenhagen

Orienteering race 13:30 [5] 2.5 km (5:24 / km)

WMOC Sprint D final -2nd
Copenhagen
About 600m shorter than A...disappointing as I can't see a reason for it in a sprint.
Lost 45s on 10...a combination of route choice and execution
Apart from that not too much.
A fairly meaningless 2nd. The damage was of my own making yesterday.

Saturday Jul 7, 2018 #

Orienteering race 14:40 [3] 2.8 km (5:14 / km)

Wmoc Sprint Qualifier
Ran pretty well until missing out 16. Certainly amply quick enough to have dawdled through the last 5 controls that were all in a straight line and still qualifed:-( Probably would have taken me 15s to go to 16. Boo. Major downer.
On the plus side felt comfortable and to be running well but it's the D final for me.

Mtn Bike 50:00 [3]

Nærum to the coast from the campsite after sprint Qualifier. With T. Nice ride.

Warm up/down 25:00 [3]

Nice and hot

Urban/Sprint training.
SOUL Aboyne race from 2015 which i somehow had missed. Saw bits of Aboyne i'd never been to, and got caught out a couple of times too. Enjoyable and served a purpose.

Before and after O.

Orienteering race 1:00:50 [4] 7.46 km (8:09 / km) +35m 7:58 / km

Carse of Ardersier: Blue
First O since BOC - needed some before WMOC.
Brutally roasting in anything resembling an open area; more comfortable in the forest fortunately.
First time here since the 6 day event. Still very tough for a flat area. Where there's not heather there are brashings and if they don't get you the small up and downs do.
Nice planning to avoid most of the paths. Pretty slow and hesitant near some controls, which were sometimes quite hard to see in the heather. Lost a fair bit of time at 7 and 9 but reasonably pleased.
Impressed by JT "junior"s time - 42. JW 48.

Note

Walked across the Dee without getting my shorts wet between Dinnet and Aboyne on the way home. Cant remember being able to do that before. Then had a lovely dip for a while.
