Orienteering race 39:09 [5]

JK Day 2: Middle - Bereton Spurs
Blew this at 8. Couldn't make a spur fit and relocated off 5. 2 mins binned at least. Coupled with a miss at 5 initially, and a few other significant hesitations easy to see time disappearing. Still lucky to get 8th and not too far down for tomorrow.

Warm up/down 10:00 [3]

Pre JK Sprint

Orienteering race 14:09 [5] 2.7 km (5:14 / km)

Jk Sprint MOD Stafford
Straightforward but lots of twists and turns. Lost about 30s total so could have been better but aim was a top 5 and got a top 5. Could have managed 3rd maybe 2nd with a perfect run but not DonPs time.
5th M60 behind DonP, JE, JC and SJ.
Glad I rented an SAIC card.

Road Bike 30:58 [3] 11.37 km (2:43 / km) +126m 2:35 / km

Gentle leg turnover out to Glen Cat and back. Nice.

Aboyne Academy Run Club
19 of them today. Four coaches (self + BP, WB and IW) so able to split things up a bit. Really good and fun session. WIth IW took the quicker / stronger ones around the long Balnagowan loop, although the group split and I took the relative stragglers straight back over the top of the SE Balnagowan hill..in and out of the fallen trees and down the steep slope at the end. They coped, not surprisingly since at least one of them had pretty good running / cycling pedigree.
Lovely day and feeling good myself once warmed up..always difficult and painful keeping up with the youngsters until then.

Orienteering 43:42 [3] 4.61 km (9:29 / km) +102m 8:32 / km
shoes: Mudclaw 300 b/r

Out in Glen Dye on a beautiful early evening. In the NW map quarter looping over the main stream and back. Keeping close map contact - just nice to be out there running with a map. Great forest running conditions after the snows. A few deer about.

Road Bike 1:48:53 [3] 42.89 km (2:32 / km) +528m 2:23 / km

Couldn't quite fit in running the SOL because of a commitment in Finzean early afternoon so morning spin on the bike in order.
Shooting Greens, AA box loop anticlockwise, back road to Bridge of Feugh; Banchory; Glassel; Craiglash and home.
Lovely day for it. Tired after the two races yesterday but not too much so.

Abbey Craig Middle Blue
Down for the Saturday only of the Scottish Spring. Need the O practice....badly. Lovely day and the forest, a completely new one for me, in great shape.
Not a great start, wasting a heap of time circumventing green that maybe you could run through to no. 1. Took a little while to get used to the 1:4000 scale and it all seemed a bit more like a long forest sprint.
Most of the rest went OK with the exception of 12 where the veg seemed a little strange and ended up too far south (?30s), another 20s at 14 where I couldn't see the boulder when stood beside it, 18 when visiting the control n the rootstock nearby, then overshot 19 (20s).
Lots of fun anyway and happy enough. Generally focussing well, and happy to be within a minute of EM at the end. Good battle with DonP too.

Orienteering race 13:30 [4] 2.8 km (4:49 / km)
shoes: Roclite 295

Rosyth Sprint.
Don't do these things very often :-). But there's a JK sprint on Friday.
Hmmm, this one was a little bland with very little variation - basically the nature of the housing estate rather than the planning, but no real technical difficulty of note. Really nice to have such a small map that didn't require much folding.
The only time lost pretty much was faffing when punching. This has got me thinking about SI Air. Mixed punching. Discuss.
Certainly if you have any aspirations to do well in any sprint of importance, and where SI Air is available, then you have no choice but to use it. 3 secs saving per control...20 controls...no brainer. Although that said, I'm probably not quick enough in these races anyway! Well cuffed by IM and DP.
Enjoyable as pretty much a one off but wouldn't travel far to do it every week.

Map run in Potties. Nice running through some parts before the bracken starts to take over.
Shorts weather.

XC Skiing 1:15:00 [3]

At Clashindarroch with T.
Lovely snow, and tracks still in decent shape after what was obviously a busy day there yesterday. Glad we got out early as it will probably be warm and sticky later. Tracks almost empty at 0930...and a decent amount of sun.
Out for 1.45.

Orienteering race 48:00 [4] 5.77 km (8:19 / km) +306m 6:35 / km
shoes: Mudclaw 300 b/r

Corsedardar Blue
Out early in the snow. Clean to 3 then too high at 4 and lost loads, not seeing the white of the kite or the clearings in the snow, and caught up by EM. Could see him ahead until 8, then caught him again at 11 after the wee control pick. Couldn't even think about keeping up with him to the finish.
Very enjoyable run out in what is now a really nice area.

Trail / Terrain Run 36:00 [3] 5.1 km (7:04 / km) +140m 6:12 / km
shoes: Mudclaw 300 b/r

Wet and windy but not quite so bad once in the wood. Up south side of Criagmore via the firebreak then followed the race route round the west loop, returning via community path. Estate are clearly up to something with the paths....hopefully not too much manicuring.
Tired but enjoyed it as a loosener.

Road Bike 1:58:20 [3] 50.16 km (2:22 / km) +623m 2:13 / km

Decided against the group ride this morning because I didn't know how things would be after the lurgey. Anyway felt pretty good from the get go as it happened and probably should have gone with them.
Really enjoyable spin over Corsedardar and then out to Birse Church; back down to Feughside Inn and round the AA box loop; followed by Shooting Greens and then the long way round the Ballogie loop to tip it over 50K. Bit of a headwind at times but not chilly and almost a feeling of spring in the air even if there's still a stack of snow piled around.
Good confidence boost.

Orienteering 1:12:05 [3] 6.83 km (10:33 / km) +225m 9:04 / km
shoes: Mudclaw 300 b/r

MAROC training on the doorstep so...in spite of this morning.....need to do some running after spending far more time biking and skiing recently..and O in particular if I'm to be at all capable at the JK.
Bit wrecked though and cramping set in late on but crawled round and kin dof enjoying it...odd bits of Potties I'd barely been in before too.

Much better today but not up to anyting energetic.

Seem to have picked up a lurgey on the way home. No choice but to skip Run Club today.

XC Skiing 3:30:00 [3] 24.4 km (8:36 / km) +741m 7:28 / km

Krkonose #5: Cerna Hora-Pec to Zacler.
Couldn't see a thing from the get go. A good day for fog. At least the first couple of hours anyway. Brightened up about lunchtime and all was well, except snow was very sparse late on...skiing on thin ice as it were. Single coffee stop in one of the boudas. Real end of season feeling.
Everything closed in Zacler when we got there. What do Czechs do on a Saturday afternoon?

Good trip but could have been great one month earlier with more consistent snow. Nice to sample some real XCski outside Scandi, Swiss, Italian locations. Norway still wins hands down.

XC Skiing 4:28:00 [3] 25.9 km (10:21 / km) +956m 8:44 / km

Krkonose #4: Spindelruv Mlyn to Cerna Hora-Pec.
Mighty funny names they have for places round here.
Top day for snow and sun. Iffy snow to start with but got better and then only intermittent problems.
Long day but brilliant and picturesque snow. A few disasters on the occasional downhill pistes though.
The Giant Mountains are worth a visit.

XC Skiing 3:43:00 [3] 21.5 km (10:22 / km) +940m 8:31 / km

Krkonose #3: Harrachov to Horni Misecky
Unexpectedly great snow for a semi continuous climb up from 700m to Visecka Bouda at 1200m. Brief stop for a coffee before real Scottish mountain weather conditions set in for the further climb to the Polish border to see the great view that wasn't. Then ground out a long traverse in almost white out to a late lunch stop at Vrbatova Bouda. Then it all cleared to great Czech views and in time for a superb run down through a switchback of turns to Horni Misecky. A little tired to make more than a token effort at the steep downhill pistes late on. Sun finally came out. :-)

XC Skiing 3:37:00 [3] 25.1 km (8:39 / km) +350m 8:05 / km

Krkonose #2: Jizerka to Harrachov
Snow over night provided a decent top up. Mix of decent cut trails and not today. Plenty of snow though and no real impact of slightly higher temperatures other than less glide than previous. Spent most of the day in Poland before crossing back into Czech rep. late on.
Worked hard today especially with the poorer glide.

XC Skiing 4:02:00 [3] 28.8 km (8:24 / km) +520m 7:42 / km

Krkonose #1: Bedrichov to Jizerka
Cloudy and pretty much snowing all day long. Mostly good tracks today although plenty of fresh snow in them slowing things up. Small clumping problem as temps rose a little. Very much a black and white world.
Slightly sore left big toe but otherwise distance/time fairly comfortable.

Monday Mar 5, 2018 #

XC Skiing 2:54:00 [3] 19.2 km (9:04 / km) +450m 8:07 / km

Nice loop from Bedrichov village through nice pine forests, round two lakes and across a couple of dams. Not really high enough to have consistent snow throughout but almost all skiable. Cloudy today.
Three days of skiing last week has certainly helped. Now getting back some decent fluidity to technique in the tracks.
Begin Krkonose (Giant Mountains) Trail tomorrow.

Trail / Terrain Run 38:00 [3] 5.2 km (7:18 / km) +120m 6:33 / km

Round the Craigmore trig loop just to keep the running legs going a wee bit. Lovely deep snow - mostly no-one had been before. Feeling pretty good.

XC Skiing 50:00 [3] 5.1 km (9:48 / km) +120m 8:46 / km

Couldn't not.
Repeat of the run earlier in the day but this time on skis. Bit of an undignified scramble up the back to the Craigmore trig but lovely skiing along the main tracks in Potties. Recommended.

Note

Tramped through Finzean Woods from Corsedardar Memorial down to Finzean House, up the drive and down to the farm shop...then back up the snowy road after sustenance. With T. Great deep snow.

XC Skiing 1:35:39 [3] 10.75 km (8:54 / km) +192m 8:10 / km

Ski from the Corsedardar memorial through Finzean Woods down the south drive to the gate; up the snow covered minor road to the church then past Finzean Farm Shop, Finzean School; down the main house drive and then retraced tracks back through the woods, round and back up to the memorial. Brilliant skiing...could have been in Norway. Would have been even better on the way back if the one person I met, a delightful lady, hadn't been trashing my tracks as she walked. :-(
