Walk 5:00:00 [3] 20.0 km (15:00 / km)

Another good day. Weather improved too.
Back through NZ Bush via Browning Hut after a night in Rocks Hut. c tolerant of him what can't go up hills nearly as fast as he.
Good mileage over the two days of mainly very rough single track and a bigger sac than normal.

With c. Hills behind Nelson.
Hacket Road end via Hacket, Browning and Pelorus tracks to junction near Middy Creek Hut then uphill to Rocks Hut.
Good pace (for me). Very very wet. Only really met one other person on the way and one other in Rocks Hut.

Trail 1:29:45 [3] 7.3 km (12:18 / km) +1200m 6:45 / km

Roy's Peak Track..up
Rather wanted to bivvy on the top of Roy's Peak but forecast for the week isn't great so took advantage of the sunny, if very blustery, weather. Hit the climb pretty hard a lot of it being a great gradient. Too much climb to run but could fast walk pretty well. Got it into my head that I wanted to break 90 and did just.
Must be one of the best views on the planet. Stayed up there a good while.

Trail 47:00 [3] 7.5 km (6:16 / km) +4m 6:15 / km

Roy's Peak Track..down again
Stopped a few times to admire the views.

Trail 5:01:00 [3] 33.5 km (8:59 / km) +1350m 7:29 / km

Routeburn Track with DMcK & W. Big day.
Didn't plan on doing this until next week but weather good and the opportunity to do it in good company was too good to miss. Quads still feeling Wednesday but what the heck.
Bus all the way round to The Divide then the whole track in one go. Great weather, views etc and great chat. Had to wind it up at the end to make our transport but all good.

Excellent all round...suitably knackered and ready for a beer or two in the same company.

Trail 4:36:44 [3] 12.9 km (21:27 / km) +1577m 13:19 / km

From Fantail Falls straight up.
Too steep to run any up. Sizeable sac.
To Brewster Hut (90 mins)then onto subsidiary top of Mount Armstrong (another 60 or so). Brilliant hut location and views awesome including of the Brewster glacier. Seriously tough on the quads coming back down..especially through the birch wood. Just tree roots on a steep hillside.
Glad of the swim in Lake Wanaka.

Tuesday Mar 14, 2017 #

Trail 3:45:00 [3] 24.5 km (9:11 / km) +450m 8:25 / km

Tongariro North Circuit Day 2
Oturere Hut to Whakapapa
Left Oturere Hut just after 8.30...Rain just about stopped. Brief stop at the Waihohonu hut after 1.15 and back at Whakapapa in time for lunch.

Very enjoyable circuit, if a wee bit of it did feel a little like a theme park boardwalk with all the folk. Some stunning scenery though and much better to do the Circuit rather the Crossing.

Tuesday Mar 7, 2017 #

Trail 4:30:00 [3] 22.0 km (12:16 / km) +1000m 10:00 / km

Tongariro North Circuit Day 1
Whakapapa to Okurere Hut clockwise
Weather forecast grim so swapped the circuit direction to do the Crossing on Day 1. Good move.
Set off at 7 and made Mangetepopo by 8.30..and was promptly stuck in the midst of the hordes just doing the Crossing. Good pace up to the Red Crater at which point clouds parted and all was revealed in its volcanic splendour. Left the masses at Emerald Lakes and headed down to Oturere Hut through the desert. There by 1230... plenty of time for semi bathe at the waterfall.

Then it started raining....And rained all night.

Monday Mar 6, 2017 #

Note

Wandering at Whakapapa. Thought about a run, but soon thought better of it.

Trail 1:47:00 [3] 21.0 km (5:06 / km) +380m 4:40 / km
shoes: Inov8 RaceUltra

Rotorua off road half.
Never done a race before where the route and profile hasn't been available before hand. Ok the route was published about half an hour before but without any contours.
23 degrees and a very lumpy course on MTB terrain, wide tracks and very twisty single tracks. Happ to see no hint of tarmac at all. Didn't pace it well but great route through Whakarewarewa, a big redwood forest on the edge of Rotorua. First lap was fairly grim and second time around was worse...bit warm and a long day still in my legs form two days before. Anyhow it was fun but completely stuffed at the end.
33rd and 4th M55
Disappointed not to win the kayak, BBQ or garden table and chairs not to mention the £200 Garmins, running shoes and overnight stays in the Copthorne Hotel - all spot prizes, and there was more.
Won in 84. 1st M55 97.

Sat in thermal pools getting even more wrinkly after. Too tired to get out.

Saturday Mar 4, 2017 #

Note

Wandering about looking at gold mining industrial archaeology trying to recoup some energy.
Swim in Lake Okareka near Rotorua.

Friday Mar 3, 2017 #

Trail 3:49:00 [3] 18.0 km (12:43 / km) +1000m 9:57 / km

Pinnacles and Billy Goat from Kauaeranga road end in Coromandel. Wasn't going to do as much as this with a race Sunday but when in NZ and the weather is good..
Run / Walk in hot weather..20-24.
Up the track to Pinnacles Hut then the Pinnacles. Good chat with John and AlisonS, mates of DonaldW on the top. Brilliant views. Back via Billy Goat trail.
Ruined myself a bit but sat in the river after.
