Orienteering race (SOW 6 Sunnegga) 57:24 [5] 4.5 km (12:45 / km) +240m 10:04 / km
shoes: XTalon 212

Another 2500m start. This time in fog. Late off today.
First 3 all downhill through rubble and boulders. Tricky stuff. Lost a min at 1 being very careful. Cleanish through very technical and extremely steep hillside. Could have done with dobs instead of xtalons.

Went well through the steep forest through 10. Lost another 2 mins at 11 after track run. Rest were all navigationally fine but 2 serious uphills late on including to last control were grim. Just couldn't get enough breath. Even walked part of the run in.

Delighted with 12th, 6 mins down on this the most technical of days. Hopefully top 20 and top Brit overall. That'll do.

Note

19/193. Toughest level of competition I've done for a good while. Very hard physically too, mainly due to altitude.
EN-U NSK 1st.

Orienteering race (SOW 5 Trockener Steg) 53:00 [5] 4.4 km (12:03 / km) +240m 9:28 / km
shoes: XTalon 212

The most astonishing setting for an O event I've ever been to. High alpine terrain beneath the Matterhorn. Rocky slabs and rubble, very little vegetation, plenty of large snow areas and large crags masked by deep snow. And a start at 2900m beside the gondala station. Someone had both bottle and foresight to hold an event with 5000 folk up there. Just fabulous with 360 deg mountain views.

Technically v diff eastern part- just slabs of rock. First 7 controls in there. Lost 2 mins at 4 searching for a minuscule re entrant with EH as it happens. Then too low at 7 after the longest leg.

Crossed to the easier stuff but missed a vague path in the rubble and lost another mins or so at 9. Rest were fine. Funny how easy it seemed running on the flat and downhill but any sort of uphill gradient was so hard.

Maybe 6 mins lost. 32nd and 11 mins down on EN-U again. Great run from AM in 6th. The result though seemed secondary to a fabulous event.

Even a broken cable car meaning an extra 2200' feet of walking down after the event didn't seem to matter.

11 AM

Orienteering race (SOW 4 Gruensee) 47:01 [5] 3.7 km (12:42 / km) +160m 10:27 / km
shoes: XTalon 212

Great pre-alpine stoney pine forest between 2200 and 2400m. Fields of big big boulders.. to be avoided.

Great setting again with a high level start.

Started 1 mins after AM. Crossed the boulder field to 1, saw AM exiting. Saw him again exiting 3 when I lost 30s misreading contours. Never saw him again.

Focused well throughout, no other real mistakes apart from slightly low at 6. Tough tough course at the altitude. Avoided the big boulders through 15, 16, 17 by dropping to the path...no brainer. Steep hills required real effort with breathing being tough.

Loved it and well satisfied with 6 mins off the pace today. 16th. Well pleased and had a nice gap to folk like JE, JC and AM.
EN-U won again.

Walk 45:00 [3]

Gornegrat (3089) all the way down to Zermatt via Riffelsee, Furi and the gorge walk. Cracking day and stunning Matterhorn and glacier views. With AH and JH and T. Leisurely and almost all downhill. Out for a long time....9 til 5. Great day.

9 AM

Warm up/down 10:00 [2]
shoes: XTalon 212

Up the steep hill to the start

Orienteering race (SOW 3 Gornegrat) 50:30 [5] 5.9 km (8:34 / km) +200m 7:19 / km
shoes: XTalon 212

Even higher today. Day 5 swapped with Day 3 for weather reasons - seamless Swiss efficiency to make it happen.

Raining heavily on the way up in gondola. Changed in a tunnel under the Gornegrat railway to keep dry. It soon stopped though and cloud cleared to get some decent views.

Fast runnable open alpine pasture is not fast at 2700m plus. Lung burning start too. 1 on the level then 2,3 and 4 straightforward but steep up. Could see 1min man SK all the way up but couldn't make much headway. Once through the tunnel the long leg to 5 was level - I went high he went low. Mine was better except i overshot. 2 mins lost. Caught him properly at 8 then ahead until 14 where the control was behind a really wee crag and he caught up again. Then nip and tuck to the up hill finish. He beat me in but then he did do a sub 2.30 London in 1981.

Probably 3 mins lost but well impressed by the continentals speed today. 9 mins down. Put it down to superior lung capacity:-) Good to see Nydalen SK mixing it at the front these last 2 days with ENU and JK.

34th. 2nd Brit today. AM had another gear it seems. Still pleased to beat the rest. Recovering ok overall.

Completely shot afterwards. Appreciated the gluwein with AH and JH in the Riffelpalp. Glad of a rest day.

Warm up/down 10:00 [3]
shoes: XTalon 212

Down the hill from the gondala station at Schwarzsee. Matterhorn in cloud but amazing setting.

Orienteering race (SOW 2 Stafelalp) 51:30 [5] 5.0 km (10:18 / km) +260m 8:10 / km
shoes: XTalon 212

Nervous about this after day 1 disaster.

Clouds cleared a lot as I started.
Caught AR 1 mins at 2, then clean through all the really physical moraines stuff. Took the track route round to 7. All good. Really felt the altitude toiling up the hill to 7 and 8. Binned a couple of mins on both 8 and 11 but happy with 6 mins down. 11/196 ish. Top Brit. Some redemption. Good day.

Warm up/down 10:00 [2]
shoes: Pegasus 29 (red)

Zermatt... To start.

Orienteering race (SOW 1) 20:15 [5]
shoes: Pegasus 29 (red)

Hmmm. 175th to no 1 in M55. Race over. Mental aberration coming out of the field into the streets of Zermatt.

Good course. Caught up to 56th but two other mistakes costly too. Disappointing start to the week in great area for a street race.

Thursday Jul 17, 2014 #

Walk 30:00 [3]

Lauchernalp (1969) to Fafleralp(1787) . Leisurely. Drinking in the scenery. Out for 2.30 ish.

34 degs in the valley.

1 PM

Trail 1:56:00 [3]
shoes: Pegasus 29 (red)

Combatseline (2238) back along the bisse then high level track and up the single track to Mont Rouge (2491). Cracking views all round. Over Mont Carre , La Tsermetta and down to Thyon. Winding track then single track down to Veysonnaz (1250) to meet T, G and M. Hot. Fabulous alpine day.

Easy run but had to walk the steep uphills. Feeling the altitude.

Warm up/down 12:00 [3]
shoes: XTalon 212

To start. Very pleasant sun.

Orienteering race 37:59 [5] 3.7 km (10:16 / km) +150m 8:32 / km
shoes: XTalon 212

Same map as yesterday. First few controls in the grottier stuff then beech woods and gullies again.

Lost about 3 mins in the iffy veg at no 1 then largely clean until 10. Lazy and missed the depression.

Very enjoyable but seem to be struggling on the hills.

Same outcome as yesterday.

Warm up/down 20:00 [3]
shoes: XTalon 212

Out and back on the main track where yesterday's finish was. Lots of mushroom pickers about.

Saturday Jul 12, 2014 #

Warm up/down 15:00 [3]
shoes: XTalon 212

Orienteering race 49:25 [5] 5.3 km (9:19 / km) +235m 7:38 / km
shoes: XTalon 212

Reminded me of beech woods in the Chilterns only steeper. Not feeling to be running well but got the key route choices right.

1/25 including 50s and W35s.

Thursday Jul 10, 2014 #

Trail 42:15 [3]
shoes: Pegasus 29 (red)

Serious climb. Very alpine. Great views.

Wednesday Jul 9, 2014 #

Walk 45:00 [3]

Through the meadows and into the beech woods.
Out fir 2.30 ish.

Tuesday Jul 8, 2014 #

Trail 19:00 [3]
shoes: Pegasus 29 (red)

Up to the ruined castle

Sunday Jul 6, 2014 #

Trail 1:04:30 [3]
shoes: Nike Pegasus 27 (b/y)

From Raemoir West Gate, through Spy Brae Wood, and up to the ruined Shooting Lodge by the usual route. Feeling very good all the way up and nice day to be on the Hill of Fare. Looked for any semblance of a path for an alternative route back but I've never been able to find one, and I couldnt this time either - and never fancy the heather to be honest. Retraced steps to the junction and went to the top of Craigrath instead. Back the usual way.

Felt to be running well. Encouraging.

S&C 55:00 [3]
shoes: Saucony Progrid (Orange)

Stretching out the hamstring amongst a lot of other stuff.

Mtn Bike 20:00 [3]

To and from Woodend Barn. Wet on the way back. Very.

Warm up/down 20:00 [3]
shoes: Pegasus 29 (red)

Pre and post Cambus Canters. Partly with T.

Trail race (Cambus Canters) 19:13 [5]
shoes: Pegasus 29 (red)

Wasn't looking forward to this but such a nice evening so had to! Hamstring niggle and some DOMS from earlier in the week were the reasons for lack of motivation.

JennyR starting 2secs behind was past in no time as expected. Didn't feel great for the remainder but hung in there. No one came back to me but Miles N and JennyR didn't get any further away so that was something.

Some way down on 2 months ago.

Wednesday Jul 2, 2014 #

Trail / Road Run 57:43 [3]
shoes: Pegasus 29 (red)

Johnstone Gardens, Airyhall, Jacons Ladder, picking up the usual Hazlehead loop from then on. Made it before the rain.
Steady. Slightly tight right hamstring but generally good.
