Running 15:00 [2]
(injured)

Jetlagged but got out for a gentle run after some good stretching. OK but began to feel it towards the end so stopped and walked back. Feintly encouraging if somewhat mystifying.

Friday Jan 30, 2009 #

Gym 10:00 [3]
(injured)

Did some leisurely early morning biking which was very boring, and not helped by views of Houston traffic on the freeways on the gym TV, or by News items previewing the commercials that will be shown during Sundays Superbowl. Unbelievable...on the News!

Stretching lots. Calf is certainly on the mend but hard to tell how quickly.

Films and sleep this afternoon on the flight home.

Note
(injured)

More calf massage today.

Wednesday Jan 28, 2009 #

Note
(injured)

Think the calf is going in the right direction but not going to risk running until I get back at the weekend. It's not that I'm itching to brave the freeways, sidewalks and urban sprawl in any case. Unless by some chance I get to the gym tomorrow I'll just put the week down to injury, eating lots and general lack of anything even remotely athletic.

Booked in for another go at the calves tomorrow anyway. Think I'm going to have to come up with a new calf management strategy going forward. Over the last year or two it's happened too much.

Note
(injured)

Massage at 1400 Smith. 45 minutes of work on my calves from ex-Santa Monica Track Club guy...said he never got to touch Carl Lewis though.

Fairly painful but hope it did some good.

Monday Jan 26, 2009 #

Note
(injured)

Rest the calf....massage scheduled for tomorrow.

Just need to avoid eating American sized portions of everything now.

Sunday Jan 25, 2009 #

Note
(injured) (rest day)

To Houston.

Orienteering race 51:00 [4] 6.3 km (8:06 / km)
shoes: Asics Cumulus

Great course, really tricky, shame about the calf. Felt sharp pain before the start and knew the sensible thing was not to run. Didn't pay much attention to that though. Felt it all the way round so never gave it 100%. Hope its not too bad. Rest it on a transatlantic flight tomorrow morning anyway. Pretty dumb really!

Pretty clean apart from one major hesitation and change of mind (30s) and one very poor route choice late on (40s). Maybe some other smallish route choice errors and hesitations. Just sorry not to be able to go harder.

Trail / Terrain Run 30:42 [3]
shoes: Asics Gel Trail Sensor

Steady but at a good pace with K in Glen O'Dee. Stuck to the tracks.

Thursday Jan 22, 2009 #

Swim 50:00 [3]

Very long day at work. Then got persuaded to give moral support to K in the swimming pool (and give her a lift)....not often I swim for an hour..must be many years..and probably only 50 mins worth really. Got lapped many times by guess who, but getting better.

Wednesday Jan 21, 2009 #

Warm up/down 20:00 [3]
shoes: Asics Gel Trail Sensor

Out and back from Hazlehead

Intervals 15:00 [5]
shoes: Asics Gel Trail Sensor

Time I upped the speed a wee bit.
5 x 2m/1m on the paths at Hazlehead. Felt grim to start with but things improved mildly.

Note

DNC night event at Bogendreip...didn't fancy control collecting..it can wait until Friday.

Time for a rest.

Warm up/down 10:00 [3]
shoes: VJ Twister

Before and after Inchmarnoch.

Orienteering race 38:28 [4] **** 5.1 km (7:33 / km)
spiked:12/13c shoes: VJ Twister

The north part of Inchmarnoch has turned into a great wee area. If only there weren't the fences and the road, with the hill the whole place would be fantastic..just need somewhere to park too.

Lots of people, SEDs included, overwhelmed the organisation but not sure anyone minded too much. Just a small amount of competition on the longest green course. Seemed like a chasing start with folk heading off at short intervals - kept seeing folk which was fun.

Stomach a bit iffy but went pretty well: tentative to 1 and 2, wrong depression at 3, then 4 & 5 good, great running along the ridge above the River Dee to 6, then 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11 pretty smooth, with some hesitation at 12 before no problems with 13.

He might be younger, he might be fitter, and have better eyesight and might be pretty good but not sure I can get my mind round how Scotia could do it in 27-28. Unbeleivable. No idea what other folk did.

Later:
SF: 27:35
9th/50 happy enough given the folk there.

Trail / Terrain Run 1:00:00 [3]
shoes: VJ Twister

Hanging controls in Bogendreip for the great DNC. Started off overcast but turned into a lovely Deeside day.

All went well until I came to hang the last one only to find that they'd already commenced building the big fence round the open area in the middle. Not helpful and some quick improvisation on the spot called for.

Out for 2.5 hours in total....met up with T&K who were hanging a few.

Running 30:00 [3]
shoes: Asics Gel Trail Sensor

Tillybrake, Platties, woodyard and back round Hill of Banchory with K. Her first outside run since doing her ankle. She did well.

Note

Glad to get the coughing over and feel to be running pretty well.

Friday Jan 16, 2009 #

Gym 30:00 [3]
shoes: Reebok Premier RoadPlus

Mixture of weights and cross-trainer stuff. Felt I needed a fairly restful day.

Thursday Jan 15, 2009 #

Trail / Road Run 45:00 [3]
shoes: Asics Gel Trail Sensor

Tempo run round Hazlhead with Rob at lunchtime in all the rain and wind Aberdeen could throw at us. Felt pretty good. Got Glen Dye out of my legs.

Note

Result. Postscript to the DNC at Glen Dye. Did for them all (Big Jon, Oleg, Bruce D, Sarah, Eddie et al) on the bonus point first leg....thats all that matters.

Wednesday Jan 14, 2009 #

Orienteering race (DNC5-Glen Dye) 1:13:00 [4]
shoes: VJ Twister

Nice night, nice place, nice course.

Clean through 1-8, although lost a good minute+ when my headtorch disconnected and a kindly lady happened to be passing and helped me sort it - thanks Clare M!

Unfortunately got confused by the hills 8-9 and promptly undid a lot of the good work. Then fell apart even more on the uphill leg to 11 and really was pretty dire from then on in. Enjoyed it but would have been happy with 20mins less.

Note: Having to noticeably stop more to read the map, especially at night.
This ageing thing is no fun.

Running 30:00 [3]
shoes: Reebok Premier RoadPlus

Encouragement for serious cyclist Tom Welsh in his introduction to running. Gently out from work to Hazlehead.

Monday Jan 12, 2009 #

Gym 30:00 [3]

Not much time today so sneaked a quick half-hour when things were a mite quiet at work.

Running 10:00 [3]

Doesn't really count I suppose but ran to and from Steve's house where MAROC committee meeting was!

Sunday Jan 11, 2009 #

Trail / Terrain Run 1:30:00 [3]

Easy running through Bogendreip looking at control sites for DNC race. Pretty sodden in some places, and more wind blow than I remember but still some cracking bits of wood. Feeling pretty tired.

Saturday Jan 10, 2009 #

Swim 40:00 [3]

Was going to run ElBrimick race but decided I'd be sensible having been ill sooo went swimming with K instead. Got to work on this breathing thing then I might be able to swim a wee bit quicker.

80 x 20m....enough...probably 50 front crawl and 30 breast stroke.

Road Running 27:00 [3]
shoes: Asics Gel Trail Sensor

Easy Banchory streets. Hill of Banchory, Station Rd, Viewmount, Watson St, Mount St, home.

Friday Jan 9, 2009 #

Trail / Terrain Run 47:00 [3]
shoes: Asics Gel Trail Sensor

Steady run from Crathes West Lodge round the estate. Lovely bright sunny morning. Didn't feel desperately light on my feet but just good to be out.

Thursday Jan 8, 2009 #

Gym 35:00 [3]
shoes: Reebok Premier RoadPlus

Yay....active again..two weeks of relative, and enforced, slothness is hopefully over.

30 mins of skiing at lunchtime, or as close to the Nordmarka as I can get right now, which isn't at all close but is, as far as gym machines go, quite fun and better still seems as though it's worth doing. Whether it manages to maintain any semblance of cross-country skiing skills is another matter entirely...not that I could skate ski anyway. Better still, no coughing, and a further bonus, perhaps that knee niggle has also gone.

I think this thing is finally lifting..might be able to do something by the weekend. Mighty frustrating but better be safe than sorry.

Gentle walk with T up behind the house into Simpsons Ground and then back through Staveley village.

Walk 1:00:00 [3]
(sick)

From Rydal up Nab Scar (direct with K - on ankle rehab program) then along the ridge to Great Rigg. Nice day again but caught a few snow flurrieslater on. Might have done the whole horseshoe but dinner appointment with S&E was pressing so took direct(ish) route back to car park. Out for 3 hrs 30 approx. Coughing away so still no running.Fairly heavy rucsac.

We certainly picked good weather to be in the Lakes. Nice to be back and be able to get some cracking days in, even if they have to be at a walking pace at present.
