Orienteering race (Sluie (Gramp)) 1:24:50 [4] 8.4 km (10:06 / km) +315m 8:30 / km
shoes: VJ Twister

Superb weather but was it cold! -5 in the car park and it didn't seem to warm up any. Took until no 5 to get feeling in my fingers.

The bracken was down but not enough, and it still seemed pretty physical. I never seemed to know what was underneath the dead vegetation. There also seemed to be more fallen trees that I remembered.

Not a good run, not concentrating well at all. TG went past me just after a miss at 2, he wasn't out of sight until after 6 but he was running much faster than I. Other big misses at 10, 11 and 14.

Trail / Road Run 42:00 [3]
shoes: Asics Gel Trail Sensor

Visiting and delivering in Edinburgh so...early morning run. I don't usually like running before breakfast but conditions were great - frosty and not too many folk about. From Tollcross, Bruntsfield, Marchmont then past Scottish Widows and up Radical Road. Started running out of time so headed back down and back through the Meadows. Really enjoyable.

Road Running 25:00 [3]
shoes: Asics Cumulus

Not much time so gentle road run round what used to be the Hill of Banchory map but is now covered in tarmac, concrete, pebble dash and other such stuff.

Warm up with Kirsty

Orienteering (DNC Race1 - Potarch) 1:02:55 [3] 5.8 km (10:51 / km)
shoes: Asics Cumulus

First race of the series in Britains original and premier night league.

Mr Harwood had kindly travelled all the way down and planned some good courses. Reasonably clean run (for me at night) but cuffed by Dan Gooch (57), Big Jon (55) and narrowly by Doug Guy (61). Nice night, nice courses, nice runnable terrain.

Messy to 2 and 4 (at least 30 secs on each).
Wandered a bit at the top of the hill on the way to 5, not sure of where I really was so probably got a bit lucky but lost 1.5 mins.
Messed about in the green at 11 having miscounted ditches..another 1 min.
Then pretty slow to 12 looking and not seeing the vegetation changes.

So I guess not so clean after all ...possibly 5 mins.

Note
(rest day)

Just way too much going on. Got to make the DNC race 1 at Ballogie after all. The rest probably won't do me any harm. Still some knee ache - don't want this to get worse. Hmmm.

Monday Nov 24, 2008 #

Note
(rest day)

Hmm...slightly worrying knee "strain" pain since that x-country ski machine on Friday. Doesn't seem to affect "norml" running though. Wasn't going to do too much today anyway.

Trail / Terrain Run 50:43 [3] 7.63 km (6:39 / km)
ahr:141 max:157

Was intending the MAROC event at Inchmarnoch and when that was off, x-country skiing at Clash, but in the event the remaining unpacked boxes won. Still K and I had a good tempo run at Crathes again in the snow and sunshine.

15 mins of warm up / down

Wonderful snow today..and some sun..get out there

Trail / Road Run 1:11:51 [3] 12.1 km (5:56 / km)
shoes: Asics Gel Trail Sensor

Kirsty wanted a long flattish run so happy to oblige. Went from Scolty car park through Blackhall to the Duncans House then along the south bank of the Dee. Lovely sunshine and pristine snow. very picturesque. We were going to come back through the forest but it was so nice by the river that we just retraced our steps.

Did a few short sharp sprints to catch up K after taking photographs. Great day.

Warm down and some stretching

Trail / Road Run 35:00 [3]

Steady stuff - Hazlehead. Thankfully doesn't look as though they are tarmacing any more paths. Feeling fairly sprightly!

Note
(rest day)

Flat battery at Aberdeen airport precluded any running this evening. Comes of leaving the lights on on Sunday. Not very clever.

Monday Nov 17, 2008 #

Walk 10:00 [3]

Fast 30 mins walk with G&J from Karl Johans Gate to work. -3

Swim 30:00 [3]

60 front crawl and 60 breast stroke lengths in that big pool again.

Sauna after.

Sunday Nov 16, 2008 #

Note

Meant to run Crathes cross-country but mistimed my flight to Oslo which meant that I couldn't. Hence contented myself with warmup with K, and then dotting backwards and forwards giving Sarah, Carolyn, Clare , Jane and K vocal support whilst they suffered. Then mad dash for the airport. Made it ..just.

Trail 20:00 [3]
shoes: Asics Gel Trail Sensor

Easy running with K at Crathes in advance of cross-country.

Trail 1:20:24 [3] 15.01 km (5:21 / km)
ahr:158 max:199 shoes: Asics Gel Trail Sensor

Hill of Fare from Raemoir House Hotel west entrance. Really warm - 15 degrees. Ran the long loop that I used to do quite frequently with Hew and Jim but haven't done it for ages. Today did it anti-clockwise just to be different. Felt pretty heavy and sluggish for the first 45 mins but then again it was mostly uphill. Much better coming back, once i got a bit of shelter from the wind.

15 km all on good tracks and paths, good weather, great views all around and never saw a soul except a guy outside the hotel. Very few folk ever seem to head up on to these hills. They don't know what they are missing.

Trail / Road Run 35:00 [3]
shoes: Asics Cumulus

Out from work at lunchtime. just steady to Hazlehead. A few paths in better state than they used to be, but a few having also been tarmacced...hmmm. Good to escape for a bit. Felt pretty good.

Note

Bikes, skis and everything else arrived today. Completely surrounded by huge piles of boxes. Guess what we'll be doing for a day or two.
Garmin USB connector arrived too so I can upload stuff again...so I have.

Trail / Terrain Run 1:02:39 [3] 7.67 km (8:10 / km)
ahr:152 shoes: Asics Cumulus

From Scolty car park up the main path to the top, and on over to Hill of Gauch. What a great bit of forest that is. Wandered around up there for a bit before heading back through the best bits in the gloaming.

The forestry folk have felled a bit of the wood just east of the steep path up to Scolty top, its changed the character of that path completely.

You forget what cracking bits of woodland there are in Scotland and bits of this one are as good as any. Compared to many of the rocky Oslo forests many of those on Deeside are bliss to run through.

Didn't push it, just taking things steady. Lots of twisting and turning, with a fair bit of heather work on the top. Really enjoyable.

Gym 40:00 [3]
shoes: Asics Cumulus

Aberdeen gale so sampled the new gym at work. Most impressive...might even use it a bit on days like today.

30 minutes on the cross-trainer and 10 on the rower.

Note

Hmm...there's been snow in Oslo ever since we left. Going to have to find a substitute for the langrenn this winter I think. Somehow I don't think Huntly will quite be the same as the Nordmarka, certainly Glen O'Dee won't be. At least all our stuff arrives next week including the skis, if by some miracle....and the bikes, and more running shoes...and the green tea...I know someone who'll be happy.

Road Running 41:30 [3]
shoes: Asics Cumulus

Steady in the rainy darkness. Down Raemoir Road, Station Road, up to Glen O'Dee hospital, then a couple of stints up and down Corsee Hill before heading back via the golf club hut.

Pretty good.

At Bogendreip with K. Linked many of the nicest bits together and with the bracken being over was a really enjoyable run at a really good tempo for 30 mins of it.
