Biking 20:00 [3] 6.0 mi (3:20 / mi)

Double commute.

Back to the smoke. I felt substantially better this morning than I have for the past week or so. Waking up without a headache is excellent. I'm wearing my N95 mask all day today, which is annoying, but means that my throat and head don't hurt too much, so yay.

UC Berkeley is closed due to air quality until after Thanksgiving, but of course, we are all still in lab because lab. Sadly, also all my rehearsals this week are also cancelled due to the smoke, although playing the flute is not actually that much fun when the air is this bad. I'm really hoping for some nice steady rain in the near future!

Hiking 4:00:00 [3] 9.5 mi (25:16 / mi) +850m 19:46 / mi
shoes: Saucony Peregrine

Hiking with Sam and Presto up Granite Chief! Sam and I decided that we really needed a break from the smoke, so we set off for Tahoe today. The air is SO MUCH BETTER HERE. It turns out breathing is highly underrated. It was nice to not feel the dragging exhaustion that seems to come with the bad air all the time.

Aside from all the Squaw Valley infrastructure, this was a gorgeous hike. Actually, even the Squaw Valley stuff wasn't that bad, it just would have been nicer without it :-). Apparently they have been making snow at Squaw, so there were these kind of hilarious snow roads surrounded by completely dry dirt. The views from the top were a bit hazier than usual, but it was so nice to be up in Tahoe. Presto also seemed extremely happy to be out on a hike with breathable air. I think he's been kind of confused about what's going on.

Stretching 10:00 [3]

Normal stretching back at home. My throat actually doesn't hurt for the first time in a while. The trip to Tahoe was an excellent decision!

Biking 20:00 [3] 6.0 mi (3:20 / mi)

Double commute. Biking with an N95 mask on is uncomfortable.

Annnnnd....now UC Berkeley is closed because the air is so bad. There are things I don't miss about Boston weather (heat, humidity, knee-high slush puddles), but school closures for snow are infinitely preferable to school closures for air quality.

Note

Air quality has dropped from merely being "unhealthy" to "very unhealthy". I guess at least if I was going to run yesterday was the day to do it... My lungs, throat, and head are displeased.

Running 22:13 [3] 2.1 mi (10:35 / mi)
shoes: Brooks Running 19

Running with Presto after lab! I was able to work from home this afternoon, which meant I didn't have to do the double commute. Presto was kind of going insane bopping around the house while I was working, so I decided that even with the bad air we probably needed a run. The air was indeed quite bad. I was trying to take it really easy (although there's a limit to how easy I can take it on the hill), but even still my heart rate was REALLY high. I started feeling a bit light-headed after a mile, so I turned around there. Presto was extremely pleased to be outside and since we saw 10 deer on this run, was also super excited about the deer.

Strength 5:00 [3]

Normal abs. My throat, lungs, and head definitely did not appreciate this run, but the rest of me did.

Stretching 10:00 [3]

Normal stretching.
